1957 Evinrude Fisherman 5.5 powerhead removal for new impeller

Many people complain about these older engines because the powerhead must be removed to do the water pump job. In most cases, that powerhead pops right off there in about five minutes, so not a big deal, unless of course the screws are corroded/rusted. The upside of this is it forces you to look at and service that crazy lower crankshaft seal assembly, and this is extremely important! Like you say, replace that gasket and oring everytime you pull the powerhead. Many folks don't know what these pieces do, or appreciate their importance, which leads to water getting inside the engine and quick rod wear. Sure, the newer models have a little shift rod connector just about the gearcase, but it is a pain to access, and pulling that gearcase down usually messes up the roll pin that holds the seal parts in place. It is not so easy to reconnect that somewhat hidden connector as well. Messing up that connection will result is poor shifting/clutch dog/gear lug damage.

Would you believe that our local marina here in AuGres, Michigan had the o-ring and that cork gasket/seal in stock!!? The package had a date on it that it was received and it was received to the marine dealership in 2001 haha! I guess no body replaced theirs much!
