OMG! Heaven! I saw one of these exact cars on the road this week and it really is a huge car. I believe this was the most expensive car at 13K back then when the average American salary in the 1950's was circa 5K. We sure knew how to build them then. I love the Chrysler New Yorker's and their letter cars as well as Lincoln Continentals from 1956-1964.

Back in the 70's there was a Gypsy Palm Reader that had two of these cars under tarps behind the building. Not for sale, never moved. One day they were gone. Business is still there and every time I drive by it I think about those two Cads.

My father was a Cadillac dealer in Miami.. I was 7 years old when this car came out I remember my oldest brother talking about it and I remember seeing one at a new car showing, I ) September or October of 1957.. I mentioned it to and shared the video my 2 brothers since there were only 304 sold I wonder how many the Miami Cadillac dealership sold? I did forget that it had suicide back doors. I don't know if there were any other models of Cadillacs with the rear doors opening backwards.. I always thought that was Lincoln Continentals trademark. I did work in the tune-up shop in high school and remember the three two barrel 390 cubic inch engine which were sold in some of the 59 Cadillacs.. the three two barrels raise the horsepower from 300 to 325 horsepower up 25 horsepower from the standard four barrel 390 engine. Not sure what the horsepower was on the Eldorado though. Just found your KZbin channel and obviously seeing the 58 Eldorado I had to watch. I'm hooked!.... I just realized this is a five or six year old video.. as always I'm late to the party

Hi Lou. I was lucky enough to know two fellows who had these cars; one from Temecula CA, who installed a Northstar V8 - sideways - in this car; and also the fellow I bought my 91 Town Car Cartier from. This latter fellow was the rehearsal pianist for Peggy Lee for many many years, as well as many other stars. He had a beautiful white example of this 58. I still have Ms Lee, the Lincoln. Peggy Lee rode in my car many times. My friend had a stroke, loosing one whole side, yet he would have his caregiver place him up to his piano - a clear Acrylic piano gifted to him from Liberace - and would still play with one side! He's gone now, and I treasure his memory every time I drive Ms Lee or see an Eldorado Brougham like the one shown here.

The reason why modern American cars are dreadful compared to the cars of that era is all down to the trade deals that America put into place. Cheap asian cars got special import classes which meant they could be exempt from currency index pricing meaning the host manufacturing country could manipulate their currency and get away with it. Also Foreign manufacturing was exempt from federal manufacturing laws. All of this meant Asian cars could come in cheaper than American cars and this meant that American cars had to cut costs to stay competitive. Think about it an American car of the 1950s would be the third of the price of a Mercedes yet were on par for quality and design but By the 1980s and 90s American cars were down competing with plastic Asian cars. It was all down to trade deals and federal regulations.

The power seat control on the driver door included memory settings for multiple drivers. Inside the glove box were two buttons for opening and closing the trunk lid remotely. And what was referred to as “another large vent” in the center of the front floorboard was actually the front radio speaker grill. The vents on top the dash just below the windshield were the A/C vents. And the electronic eye on the left side of dash did not turn on the high beam headlights in relation to darkness similarly to later years “Twilight Sentinel”. The function was while the headlights were turned on, the “autronic eye” would switch from low beam to high beam and high beam to low beam automatically as needed when you met oncoming vehicles at night.

Another cool innovation was the "self starter" A relay on the passenger side of the firewall was connected to the battery and the generator. When the ignition key was turned to the "on" position, the lack of 12 volts from the generator would cause the starter to engage. Once the engine started the generator output would equal the battery potential disabling the relay.

Lou, My grandfather had a '58 Eldorado. Wasn't the Biarritz but really cool car. You should have pointed out the Open and Close buttons in the glove box. They controlled the trunk lid. The trunk lid opened and closed using a electric motor and worm gear setup. Grandpa would let me push the buttons to the trunk lid and I got the biggest kick watching it open and close. I loved pushing all the different buttons on that caddy just to watch what would happen. Unfortunately Grandma got into a bad accident in 1964 totaling the car. Then they got a 1968 Fleetwood. Lou, my granddad's 57 Caddy while much less unusual, and which probably cost a whole lot less, was quite a lot like this car? I remember it had all the same Crome, power everything, and even air conditioning. In 1963 my family returned to States and my dad bought a Chevy Super Sports coupe. At.age 13 my dad opened the hood and showed me the six inches from the radiator support to the back of the grill. My dad was trying to show me American car design at that time. He remarked to me,"A car built my designers instead of engeerers Spelling! Thank You! Peter Brooks.

Lou, it would be interesting someday if you can ask how they prepare all the cars for long term storage? Fogging the motors, converting to dot 5 brake fluid, removing all the battery’s, coating the fuel tanks and fuel lines and so on. I think many viewers would be interested in their long term storage techniques. I remember touring the osh kosh Wisconsin air museum and listening to how they long term store vintage WW2 aircraft fogging the big radial and inline Merlin engines and so on.

Yes, as noted here previously this is not the '58 Biarritz convertible but the more sought-after Brougham model. Incredible body styling assist by Pininfarina which has a lot to do with why the body parts from other caddies aren't interchangeable. I know these cars as my granddad purchased a stainless/black one new, albeit different interior color scheme, his every-day driver for 10 years before turning it over to my big brother and replacing it with a '68 Eldo POS. Trivia: Anyone recall what included accessories are missing here from the front glove compartment? Supposedly there are over 26,000 miles of wiring throughout these cars when including even the winding from all its electric motors. Triple deuce carbs under the hood. A source of pain for those restoring these cars: The deteriorated air cushions for the suspension. But oh man, in the day...what a car. Riding shotgun with Granddad!

I had heard previously that GM lost money on every Eldorado Brougham sold ($7K loss per car!) but the fact that a Rolls-Royce of this era cost only $9K blows me away! Cadillac was the premier luxury brand for many, many years, and advertised their cars as 'Standard of the World' because of its innovative engineering and technology. So sad that it fell from the King of Cars to nothing more than a 'Burger King'. Okay, I admit that was silly, but it is great to see them making huge steps to becoming a much better car once again (2021 Escalade for example). I know you were doing many videos at Klaremont, so you weren't able to lavish as much attention on each individual vehicle (like, what did the trunk look like?). Excellent job Lou, as always! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Things they missed about the rear armrest, where that it came with a Kleenex box perfume make up in a compact mirror in that armrest. Equipment in the glove box was a Mickey bottle and shot glasses so that you could serve tasty alcoholic beverages as you drove down the road. 😝

You missed things. What you called the vent on the floor is the front speaker, the flip-out chrome piece in the glove box was the bar table (glasses missing, i see), the rear compartment between the seats held ladies items including Lanvin perfume. How come the museum manager doesnt know these basic things about the car?

I was happy to see under the hood! Why no details??? I owned both boarder years; a '57 and a '59! The '59 was a Limo and the '57 was a Hearse !! That '58 El Dorado Braughm would have completed the set!!! We all got together, 'bout 20 of us, and crashed a high school dance one time and arrived in procession at the front of the gym! What a HOOT!!! When we got there nobody was dancing until we 20 got things started! Then everybody started dancing!!! This was at a Catholic high school, all boys, named Servite High and the girls were from a all girls Catholic High called Mater Dae High! If anyone out there remembers this night in Orange County, California, I would LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!!! Captain BUCKLEY(ret.)

I've done my research on these cars and 63 of these were totaled by insurance companies. Some barely damaged. You'd think they new what they were doing. Had a plan, but parts for these cars had to be unbelievably hard to get and very expensive. I'm sure the insurance companies got together and pieced a handful back together. What a payday that would be. Nobody really knows because there are less the 130 registered last I checked. If I found a pristine Bob Hope like owned car, I would sell everything to get it. Your house will not get the amount of equity this car will bring.

I grew up with these cars, it makes me wonder, whatever happened to the American car design in the last 30 years? because this makes Rolls Royce look like nothing, today or then. it's a shame.
@bighands697 жыл бұрын
All modern American car designs are dictated by federal regulations and also state regulations. Even how a worker stands in the manufacturing line is dictated by regulations. How the car looks, Feels and finished is all dictated by regulations. In the USSR were that happened cars looked like boxy bland lumps of plastic and metal that is now happening to US cars.
@marklion3155 жыл бұрын
@@bighands69 Sure but get in an accident at 60 MPH in this car versus a 2019 Cadillac and see what happens to you, there's a reason there are so many regulations
@bighands695 жыл бұрын
@@marklion315 60 MPH crash in a 2019 Cadillac would be a very serious thing even with all the regulations surrounding cars today. Engineering such as the creation of airbags, belts, control systems and much more is responsible for the advancements of safety. These things would have happened without government intervention. A car in the 1960s would have been safer than a car of the 1920s or 30s and government regulations had little to do with that. Just as computers have got more efficient and more capable so have cars. If the government did not interfere with the production of cars we today would have far better looking cars and maybe even safer because manufacturers would have had more resources available to research with.
@marklion3155 жыл бұрын
@@bighands69 I disagree with your conclusion
