My dad had a 1939 Willy's Jeep that served in the US army and was left hand drive. It came with a gun rack in the front too . It was a rust bucket when we bought it, but my dad restored it with authentic parts from Ford USA to pristine condition. It even had the original shovel it came with. Ran smooth as butter(for its age). Had to sell it due to financial problems. It is now in Meghalaya.

00:37 - Those are not fuel can racks, they are 'bumperettes'. 00:48 - You are wrong about the starter, all 'Jeeps' were built with electric starters though the 134 inch engines could also be hand cranked. 01:20 - Those appear to be 6.00X16 NDT, or six by sixteen inch non directional tread, tires. That would be the standard original size, 7.00X16 would be the upgrade. 01:36 - A side mirror was standard, even on WW2 'Jeeps'. The 'civvies' also had a rear view mirror mounted to windshield (windscreen) frame. 02:01 - That is the (original type) 'F Head' engine with overhead intake valves which required the higher hood (CJ3-B) to allow fitment of valve cover. The (military) M38A1 and early CJ5 vehicles used the same engine. 02:34 - Hydraulic wipers would have been original. 03:54 - No, the CJ3-B did _not_ originally come with a bench seat. Original seats were quite similar to what you have. 04:01 - You are correct about the step and it appears to be the original accessory or accurate repo. The handles (also on rear corners) were original to military vehicles, not civilian ones. They are grab handles for soldiers to manually lift the vehicle out of mud, sand, ... . 06:06 - None of those gauges are original to the vehicle. 07:21 - The hand brake is missing, they were so equipped. 08:26 - Your steering needs work. It's likely the original Ross box and the worm gear wears out. There are also several joints in the spindly linkage that wear / get loose. 08:39 - As for driving a mostly 'stock' Willys "hard and fast", you're dreaming. You can drive them plenty hard (and nearly anywhere) but don't expect speed. 08:47 - Brakes on Willys 'Jeeps' are notoriously bad. Disc brake conversions are available or can be fabricated. 08:54 - Indicator is clearly not 'stock'. 09:54 - No, it's a CJ3-B, the _third_ model of civilian 'Jeep' to be released (1953) after WW2. Before it were Models CJ2A, CJ3A. 11:27 - Speedometer not working? OK, it's a real Jeep. 12:09 - The steering will tend to track straight as long as you're moving forward in an early 'Jeep' with original axles / steering, no matter how much 'play' there is. They were designed with a high degree of caster angle to the front wheels (think shopping cart) so that the military models could be strung together in tandem behind a 2.5 ton truck like a chain of trailers. Yours does have excessive 'play' and needs adjustment / steering box replacement and / or ball joints. 13:15 - I'd have to kill that annoying turn signal about the second time I heard it if it were mine. All of that said (and after nit - picking your entire video), that's a wonderful ol' Flattie and I agree whole heartedly with your overall assessment of one's initial experience with a 'Flatfender' Willys. Reminds me of the day I bought my first CJ2 A in Winslow, Arizona. If you're ever near Sequoia National Park I'll introduce you to my current Flattie, (registered as) 1946 powered by a Buick 225 'Odd Fire' V6 with Kenne Bell speed equipment, MSD ignition, running through 4 speed with Warn overdrive. Strap in, hang on!

After watching the whole video. That engine sounds sick. Sounded like it had a big exhaust leak and seemed WAY down on power, my L134 CJ2 is significantly faster that what I saw in that video but should technically have less power. The engine displacement between the CJ3B with the F134 and the old MBs, GPWs, and earlier CJs that had the L head was the same. The difference was hey moved the intake valves to the head and left the exhaust valves in the block. That's why the 3Bs had higher hoods and cowlings. They made a little more power too but not a huge amount. The steering shouldnt be that loose. It could be as simple as adjusting the Ross steering box. Or it could need a full steering overhaul from the box to the tie rod ends. The bellcranks are known to wear out overtime same for the ball ends on the pitman arm and bellcrank. If thats the case no amount of adjustment will help. Lucklily the ross boxes are super easy to overhaul. I can one finger steer my CJ2A at 45 mph. But I did a full steering overhaul too. You had issues with first gear because the first gear in a T90 isn't synchronized like 2nd snd 3rd (called low, intermediate, and high back then) its a straight cut spur gear. If all you're used to is synchro transmissions there can be a learning curve. Those grab handles on the side would have been for man handling the Jeep when stuck. The MBs and GPWs had grab handles all over the place for that purpose. Also the flip front CJ3 windshield was awesoke. Never seen one stateside but looks like it uses some of the same parts as the flip front CJ2 windshield. Overall a great looking CJ3. Just needs some mechanical TLC.

i've got a cj3b equippied with a perkins 4.108 engine originaly designed for massey ferguson tracktors making around 50 horsepower and a 4 speed gearbox, it came like this from the factory, the funny thing about it is, it came with flashlights on the front fenders, the exhaust is on the same place but on the opposite side, same as the fuel tank which sits under the passenger seat(left hand drive also), it also doesnt have the option of opening the front window, despite the fact the whole windshield panel can drop just like this one, the spare wheel mounts behind the car, also the ignition key is located at the right side of the steering wheel, i guess theyre really quircky cars. oh and it also needs to stop to get into 1st gear but thats really not a problem since it's 2nd works like a 1st.about the brakes, i think its the same as mine, the brakes work more than good if you press the brake pedal twice, i actually find the fact that it barely brakes if you dont double tap quite usefull , since you can use them without worrying about the guy behind you crashing into you

Actually our shauffer drives my 2014 model Tata Vista TDI 1405 cc diesel unit and for the first time he got his hands behind the Steering of 99 model Maruti 800. The CJ 3B had a raised bonnet because it had an OHV engine and a 12 volt system, unlike it's predecessor the CJ 2A which had a side valve engine and a 6 volt system. The height of the bonnet on the CJ 2A was much lower because it had a side valve engine. The tow hook at the rear was for attaching a trailer, which was a very popular accessory, specially in forested areas in Madhya Pradesh.

Nice video brother ...let me add some more to it .... it's not a 58 3B as per me it's a late 63, long willys tail came in 63 by Mahindra because in that year Willy's motors' name changed to kaiser jeep corp. So for that year, no Willys stamped on the tailgate later it was replaced by Jeep. Also as per the sound seems the owner is using electronic pump try to use the mechanical pump for better sound and gas pedal response ...🥰😇

It's not even an SUV in the first place. It is, very clearly, an off-road vehicle - that was the result of a US military contract - that can be used on the road, but you wouldn't want to. It was slow even by the standards of its day, so it is painfully slow by today's standards. No power steering originally, no doors, no roof, no roll bar. Started raining? Congrats. Fell over while going off-road? Good luck. After this, and a few other cars of the same time, finally came the International Scout, and some time later, the Ford Bronco, and Chevy Blazer, which is where the SUV revolution started, and they weren't called that even then. It took some time for the Brits to catch up, they were busy making terrible little unreliable tin boxes called the Defender, but they finally made the Range Rover, which was very capable off-road and had just enough firepower to make it feel like it moved (All thanks to the World's Smallest Mass-Produced V8 in the world, the all-aluminium Buick V8 - that eventually became a Rover V8, especially for the Range Rover - that was in production from the early '60s till 2004. Told ya, they steal from everywhere), and then had enough luxuries to be comfortable for the old World War veterans that were buying those things. It had set the standard for the SUVs of then, all the way to the ones we drive today. Ever since then, the SUV has become the default car for every family as a go-anywhere, do-anything high-riding, terrible fuel economy, horrible handling behemoths.
@-oiiio-39934 ай бұрын
It was the Willys Jeep Universal, as marketed. 'SUV'? The term came into use in the 1980s as a classification (such as 'Light Truck') which affected regulations and insurance rates of such vehicles. Scout, Bronco, Blazer as 'first SUV'? You've never heard of the Willys Overland all steel station wagon, introduced in 1946, with factory 4WD starting in '49? The IHC Scout would not appear for another eleven years (1960), Ford's Bronco didn't see light until 1966, Chevy's Blazer in 1969. Chevrolet and GMC had offered Suburbans since 1936, some of which received NAPCO and other 4WD conversions. The first Land Rover was built in 1947 and was a converted WW2 'Jeep'. Production of Land Rover vehicles commenced in 1948.
