I remember that drone sound of a low idling straight 6 engine. We had a 1959 Chevy 1/2 ton and a 1949 Chevy 1 1/2 ton. They were used up until maybe 2010 when my uncle finally sold out the dairy. I hauled a lot of cattle and hay with both trucks. The first time I drove on the road I drove the 59, I was 10 years old. It was 1977... good memories. Thank you!!

@MaxGiganteum2 жыл бұрын
Aside from purchasing a cheap extension unit with a magnet on the end of it (and for the love of Mike & Ike - please do NOT buy Chinesium made crap!!!), I've always recommend simply making your own from a long thin metal rod or wooden dowel. Of course you do have to also scrounge up a magnet but those are pretty easy to come by via an old, busted up or otherwise non-functioning TV set, radio or speaker (out of a parts yard car works OK). In Jeff's case, I'd utilize a 10-15 footer and just lean it up against the truck in an out of the way yet easy to reach spot. For up on the roof of a house or other structure, manufacture a grabber from a thin rope or cord about 30-50 feet long and a good sized speaker magnet. You'll thank yourself the first time you don't have to climb down and up again! Of course... you have to remember to take it up with you when you first go up. Don't ask me how I know that! 🤔🤦♂️🙄 - Max Giganteum

A small amount of kitty litter will (mostly) make it all the way out of the exhaust system and probably won't hurt an engine. A lot of kitty litter? You could lock up an engine and/or cause damage. Interestingly, in the past, folks have poured various things down a running engine in an attempt to get the rings to seat. Granulated Borax, kitty litter, sand, etc. Supposedly, this method was often used in the old days to get rings to seat without having to disassemble an engine - not that I'd personally be inclined to try it. - Max Giganteum
@thecollectoronthecorner70612 жыл бұрын
Its all a good fix and you done everything right. only one thing? Those clear plastic gas filters are a fire waiting to happen. There Ok on a gravity feed without any pressure. However every time the fuel pump pulses they move a tiny bit. Unfortunately when that plastic filter gets aged it can burst. and right below is a hot exhaust manifold. The factory most times used a solid steel line from the fuel pump to the carb and a sintered bronze filter in the carb inlet. Some have a settlement bulb on the fuel pump. I prefer to install a steel filter someplace between the gas tank and fuel pump.
@MaxGiganteum2 жыл бұрын
My advice is that using them is OK, as long as they aren't near a serious heat source where installed AND you use actual band clamps to tighten down the lines firmly AND you swap them out every 2 years or when the mileage is up. I've yet to personally know anyone that's had a problem following those three steps. NOTE: once again, avoid the cheap Chinesium made crap. Also, do use a factory all metal type filter at the carb. The clear filters should be used as a pre-filter between the fuel tank and the pump at the block. Best wishes! - Max Giganteum
@thecollectoronthecorner70612 жыл бұрын
@@MaxGiganteum My eldest son installed one of those clear plastic filters in the fuel line between the fuel pump and the carb on his 83 GMC 305. I told him that was a fire waiting to happen. Of course he did not listen. So I went and took the fire extinguisher from one of my vehicles and had him put it in his truck. stated you might need this more than I. And after a month it failed and he needed It. Napa makes a steel filter thats acceptiable. However rubber hose under pressure can and does fail. U Tuber Waylon Wire. His square cab chevy truck caught fire because a rubber hose between the fuel pump and carb got old and failed. There was a very good reason that the factory installed a solid steel line between the fuel pump and the carb.
@MaxGiganteum2 жыл бұрын
True. I recommend keeping a good sized extinguisher in the trunk of a car bolted down so it cannot go off by accident or get damaged from rolling around. It's also less likely to be stolen. Trucks can be tricky to hide one in, obviously, but I carry one anyway. Have I ever needed it? Yes! But not for my rig - I once bailed out a driver pulled over on the freeway that was experiencing an under hood fire. Knocked it all the way down with a small, single use unit. The fire department showed up about 5 mins later to finish it off. The lesson there was to upgrade to a medium size, refillable unit. 🔥🧯 - Max Giganteum
@thecollectoronthecorner70612 жыл бұрын
@@MaxGiganteum I drove semi truck for over 40 years. Its a requirement every truck have a working fire extinguisher. You can take a discharged one and fill it with water and pressurize it with a air compressor. it will squirt water 40 feet. not the best but better than a poke in the eye.
@MaxGiganteum2 жыл бұрын
Anything is better than nothing when fire breaks out... but I'd get a chem filled unit on board ASAP because when you need one, you really need one! The last thing you want is for your extinguisher to crap out. Interestingly, that single use unit I used up had what appeared to be a seal that pierced when used. I cut it open on a lathe in the shop to confirm suspicions... I was thinking there was a valve but nope. Denied. They weren't kidding when the label stated one time use - non-serviceable. Youth is wasted on the young.. I know thats a oxymoron but hey, if you are seventy two, short coming another dang birthday.... my son bought me a car polisher, I am at a good day on two crutches and he wants me to polish his rig while he is out on his job site for the next twenty days. I guess he thinks if I get off my patoona, I am just going to feel grand. Anyhow, I was just twelve at the time, my neighbor gave me this fifty chevy car... manifold had broke on it and the carburetor was gone. I not knowing no gooder... used up all the brass rod dad had... I guess it was a good two or more big tubes of it... stuff was like three foot long. I seen this little ford flathead go by with the three carbs on it... So one and one is three as I figured and I made three different holes in that pipe with the flanges from a couple manifolds an made me my first tri power system on a 216 chevy that had seen a few miles... maybe five or six according to the oil running out of every orifice. I seen carburetors on some of dads old Wisconsin engines that I got on it... can't be wisconsin as those were updraft... this was old air cooled engines and the carburetor had enough that I could saw off the base of where it mounted.... long and short ... my dad was not impressed as those were engines he was saving for something else... back to my silly setup. I had some vacuum leaks an plugged them down to small air leaks. Vacuum leaks i mean. I had starting fluid, nineteen sixty fuel, enough that all the carburetors had a fuel line cobbled on them... all in this fifty chevy four door sedan. It shouldn't of worked and I did spend ever waking minute once I got close... Dad slept in on the few days he was home so at right early an a ways from the house, no thoughts about a exhaust that didn't exist anymore.. I was lucky to get the intake put together an on. I guess some times god looks out for stupid kids as it did start, true to form, it was right to the metal, stuck wide open, and on a engine that had seen better days... it started up an from the loud first bang, I ran away like a funny short birdy. Dad heard the explosion an though his shop just blew up so he got to see this old chevy run away and then send flames way high in the air catching our old tired dead on the wrong side tree go up in flames. I guess by now you guessed this whole dang car was on fire but in the middle of our yard an nothing near by it cept the poor tree I used to tie off stuff to it to raise an lower load out of a old truck or car. That car burnt to the absolute ground as the underside was coated in oil an grease. I had three different jugs with gasoline in them and on the front of the car by the radiator was my new I worked for it sears tool box... the fifty dollar has everything in it tool box. That whole thing made my dad laugh so hard he near pee'd himself. Central called on the phone to ask if our house was on fire and dad said no, I was just burning trash an it got a bit hot but it would go out shortly.. yeah we still had to call the operator an ask her to call aunt Mertil or get Thelma off the damn line so we could hear our call... like eight or more other folk on our same line. Yeah nice old rig you have got going there Laddie! Your at least ten year younger than me cause I baby set the fellers that was supposed to take care of Jesus
