Cool music! My dad plays jazz music with his Saxophone too! And I recognize that face, Oliver Reed! He was really cute here! I've seen him in several movies, my favorite one with him is The Three Musketeers! I think his last movie he appeared in was Gladiator. He was a great actor!

So many people over the past few decades have gotten the beatnik look TOTALLY wrong when trying to pay homage to it, understand it or revive it in some way. It's staggeringly unimaginative and is always reduced to that same single image of a woman in black ankle-skimming stovepipe trousers, a black turtleneck, a beret, a cigarette, a scowl, a pair of ballet slippers, black sunglasses and a copy of 'Howl' being read over a cheap cup of black coffee. When trawling through old photographs, fantastic archive footage etc it's a terrific revelation to see just how varied the beatnik fashions were, formulaic but with so much variation on an unspoken aesthetic code. I wish people would stop being so lazy in their research when there's so much delightful archival footage to study. I can't get enough of it and love seeing how the girls REALLY put their outfits together. Time for a proper revival on the street style blogs. No more dull pastiches and lazy stereotypical 'photocopies of photocopies'. Thank you so much for this upload, terrific fun and hugely underappreciated documentation.

You are so correct. I was a 50's kid and there was a beatnik hangout I walked past every day to and back from school. Being different from the usual 50's crowd I found them fascinating.

@@lillustpotion Books and videos, there's so much here online and in bookstores. Vintage magazines and old footage of all sorts. All kinds of books, even memoirs from that era will include unexpected tangential flourishes detailing the curation of wardrobe items and styling tips. I've been studying fashion and beauty for decades so it's hard to write a top ten list as the info comes in little nuggets from unexpected places. The more time you dedicated to sourcing vintage underground magazines, books and movies the more you'll discover. It's really eye opening. So many beatnik outfits/hair and make up combinations would confuse the mainstream wannabe stylists as they're WILD and not what modern mainstream types would imagine was worn back then (it's a bit like discovering that Kolomon Moser was NOT a 1960s artist but from a MUCH earlier era entirely, so ahead of his time he was). Also, music memoirs and old music magazines are great for fashion tips as they all involve every day teenagers so you can compare the suburban wannabes to the more sophisticated NYC and SF crowd etc. A mix is always good. Same goes for researching post punk and the goth scene. It varies wildly not just due to aesthetics but class, culture and geography. Hope you have as much fun as I do when reading about fashion history!😃
