Cool old rig. Good to see it running! I'm not familiar with the cooling system on that ol girl. I see a lot of steam? Seems to be running great regardless 🇺🇸

OMC switched to 50:1 in 1964. So this beauty should be 24:1. But please consult a manual to be certain. Runs great. Good job on saving it. Most people today would have scrapped it. It's great to hear that the owner stuck with it. There can't be too many 1962 75hp JohnnyRude's left running.

@georgekeats1478…. Actually the owner was running 40:1 and your right the service manual requires 24:1 but I think todays TCW3 are so good that it will not harm the motor even at 40:1. OMC switched to 50:1 in 1964 because this is when they designed the motors with roller bearings instead of brass bushings. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and suggestions. It’s very much appreciated.

My philosophy is if OMC said 24:1 then 24:1 it is. How can we really tell if 50:1 with modern oils is okay? We can't, until it's too late. For what it cost extra I say be nice to the old girl and giver her a little extra, like 20:1. Oil is nothing but beneficial to these engines. Even my 50:1 engines I run at 45:1. @@LivetofishOutboardRepair

I used to have one of those (on an old Glasspar Avalon). It was nice to hear that sound again.

AMAZING! I'm looking to accomplish the same thing. I have a 1967 Johnson Super Seahorse 80 Electramatic One guy told me to get rid of that dinosaur and find something newer to tanker around with. Went to the UPS store in Lansing Mi to deliver a package and the clerk says don't get rid of it. Work on it and in the end you won't regret it. So here I am.

Very cool to see an old V4 still running. My dad had a 1966 80hp. Sounded the same. But man, your steering needs tightening!

I have a 1962 Evenrude 75 hp Starflite 4. It maybe same engine. Mine still.runs good too. I use premium gas with Pennzoil semi synthetic marine 2 stroke oil, 50:1 & Champion J8C plugs. I think the book says to use 24:1 but that was using straight 30 weight. I had two different mechanics say to use 50:1. There is some kind of certification (I think "TCW3") that should be on whatever 2 stroke oil you use. The spark plugs stay clean using the Pennzoil as described. Make sure to use the correct rotor. Magneto rotor has a longer connect length & is not correct but will fit. I have owned almost 30 years. I replaced the Float in the Carburetor once. You may want to inspect the plastic components inside the thermostat block. I replace at one time the rubber diaphragm in fuel pump - just because it came with in a package that included a new fuel filter. I was told the new diaphragm was made for modern gas. My power head has been reliable. As explained in the shop.book the Automatic position of the choke is not reliable. I choke only when initially starting. I upgraded to an electronic voltage regulator when I first bought boat. The rectifier is original. The ignition Coil is original. Good Luck!

I bought a1960 Thompson boat last fall for a project boat. Has the original 75hp Johnson motor. Haven't started it yet. Not seized up. You're videos are very helpful. Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated

I would suggest pulling the spark plugs and examine them to see how each cylinder was firing. Check compression on all cylinders, a healthy motor should have at least 80 psi and within 10% of each other. Check for strong spark on each cylinder should jump at least a 1/4” gap.

I guess 2 strokes have not been legal for many years now and were banned on the lakes in California, where are they allowed these days , my dad owned a 1967 johnson 60, we all loved it so much , and alot of fun in the boat .

That motor is fine with 50:1 OMC made no changes to the Powerhead in 64, except for a Tin Plating on the Pistons which wore off during Break In. When they switched to 50:1 there weren't even TCW Cert Oils yet Granted if the upper Crankshaft Seal is worn, 24:1 will maintain the Pressure Differential a bit better.

That is not a 62 unless you changed the cowling.

You are correct the cowling was changed, but the motor is a 62. You are very observant. Good catch.

Now, of course it will run fine ... its an OMC. You've been playing around with Mercurys too long. Ha, ha ! By the way, It will run great with a 50:1 ratio if you use synthetic TWC-3 {letters stand for "Two- stroke Water Cooled"). Watch out, your typical chainsaw 2-sroke oil won't do as it is formulated for air cooled engines which runs at higher femperatures. Regards !

@danielrobert7181… Maybe your right about the Mercs the OMC aren’t as complicated. I wonder what the 3 is in the TWC though. Thanks again for watching and your reply.
