Although the US knew about the ICBMs they didn't know that the Cubans had smaller rocket launched nuclear weapons that would have been used if the US marines had tried to land on the beaches.... so this mission would have been unexpectedly warm. Great to see the Viggen flying though - love that plane :-)!

Felt good to fly the Huey again, got shot up so much. Both sorties I lost all radios and on the first hop lost the pitot...but man all 4 of the crew (including yours truly) survived both hops. Still one of my favorite helos of all time. Gimme my Apache and all is right with the world.

Star Scream has presented the timeline and motives regarding the placement of offensive missiles in Cuba incorrectly. The missiles had very little to do with the Bay of Pigs. Kruschev knew absolutely that if the U.S. had been serious about that "invasion" it would have been accomplished in 48 hours maximum. He therefore correctly inferred that Kennedy had no intention of invading Cuba at any time. Kruschev ordered the Soviet army to place the missiles in Cuba because he saw an opportunity, based on Kennedy's perceived weakness in Vienna, to have an offensive deterrent. The Soviets in actuality had less than half a dozen ICBMs total, none of which were fully operational. The CIA informed Kennedy of this fact shortly after his inauguration, but the Russians did not know if Kennedy knew this. Their public stance -- a lie -- had been that they were well armed with ICBMs, as they knew for certain that the U.S. had many ICBMs perfectly capable of hitting the Soviet Union at that time. In short there was a missile gap, but it was overwhelmingly in American favor -- contrary to public knowledge at the time. The missiles in Turkey were obsolete, technically deficient, and politically problematic from the time there were installed. It was no secret that Kennedy wanted them out of Turkey from the time he took office. The Soviets certainly knew this. Not having an offensive missile capability to strike the continental U.S. was a major problem for the Soviets. Kruschev's gambit was designed to overcome this disadvantage. He believed, incorrectly as it turns out, that Kennedy was too weak to do anything about the Cuban missiles provided they could be operational before the U.S. found out. This is where the gamble failed. The CIA learned of the missiles (for the record these were not ICBMs but medium and intermediate range missiles) before they were ready to fire. According to a KGB agent who was present at the time, when Kruschev heard Kennedy's speech to the nation announcing the crisis, Kruschev "shit his pants" because the opportunity to gain first strike parity with the U.S. had been lost and he now had an unprecedented international crisis on his hands. Dan Carlin's channel has a marvelous piece on this called "The Destroyer of Worlds". Ok, done bein' a pain in the ass. :)

the target and airfield is very close, and most planes in dcs dont have over heating problems, viggen has a really good thrust output for how little the fuel it uses in afterburner, tho i dont know about the other planes, but if you have the fuel why not they are only like ~50 nmi from their target after takeoff

The U.S ship wasn't practicing depth charging he was chasing the soviet sub and was depth charging him but with practice rounds so as not to spark ww3 and just cause the sub to surface however the subs crew never knew that they weren't real depth charges and only his desire not to cause ww3 he did not use his nuclear tipped torpedo, this happened twice with 2 separate subs during the Cuban missile crisis and 1 sub did surface against orders to fire back and use the nuclear tipped torpedoes! If it wasnt for lvl headed commanders of the subs and surface ships in this crisis we could be living a very different future right now 1 that probably would be alot worse then the 1 we have today!

Thought it said F-105 thunderchief guys. Your all flying some 1990's JS-20 export cannon fodder. Less than half of the pilots are flying the actual fighters recommended in the flights briefing.

DCS does not have most of the era specific airframes needed to run this mission. So we substitute what DCS does have and use more era specific ordnance. Remember these are "viewer requested" so we do our best to satisfy those requests. - Starscream
