the heli vs heli fights were my favorite part. cool how the the water reacts to the choppers when they fly low enough to it. those Chinooks look like really fun targets that can soak up some damage.

Get well soon Cap. Sleep for a week if you can. Separately, I really enjoyed the helo fights. I'm not sure a Chinook could really take that much of a hammering and still fly? The Huey gunnery was impressive too. The Ka-50 was flown wonderfully well also. Time flew by so it was an enthralling mission. Thanks everyone.

If the target is not jinking and the shooter is adept at pointing his aircraft in the desired direction (I see some struggles there), every potential gunshot opportunity is spoiled by excessive / mismanaged line-of-sight (LOS) rate, the angular rate at which the target is moving in relation to you. Remember the following when shooting down much slower flying objects like helicopters with guns (looking at jets here): - Distance to target (turning room) reduces line-of-sight rate - Leading hard reduces line-of-sight rate - In combination with a hard lead, higher true airspeed can reduce line-of-sight rate. If lagging, higher speed increases LOS rate. - Altitude above target = turning room + nose authority It's often preferable to turn less at one time or even turn away for a bit so that you need to turn fewer degrees in the future. That's the big idea of turning room. Get some distance / altitude, do the 180 to 360, roll into plane with the targets motion, keep the target near the bottom of the gunsight (as much as is necessary), ease the pull when the time is right and shoot while he passes through. Tracking is not feasible whenever the difference in speed is substantial. Not even an F-86 can do that against helicopters. I guess you can track for a few seconds against warbirds. High speed is a double-edged sword. It gives and takes turning room and can help keep the LOS rates low but shortens the shooting window and increases the likelihood of collision (good for birds & bees question mark?). On the other side, low speed increases LOS rates and hurts turning capability when it's needed most which easily leads to complete dumping of energy and a missed shot (very bad combination). If you have problems understanding the relationship between lead angle, speed, and LOS rate, watch some missiles in F6 view and think about it.
