I was 13 in 1963 and, on Thanksgiving Day, that afternoon, I went with my dad, an uncle and two of his sons, to see the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech Freshmen football game at Tech. It was just less than a week earlier that the assassination of U.S. President, J.F.K. had happened. I don't think most of the fans seemed to have been into that annual event that day. What a dramatic change the sport of college football has come to. To me...I enjoyed the "classic collegiate football" better than all the "flashy-ego-hype" that's been going on some 30 years with the sport.

The reason 9-1 Pitt was overlooked by the bowl committees is that they and Penn State agreed to honor the death of President Kennedy and postpone their game that weekend until December 7. Other schools, like Nebraska and Oklahoma, played on November 23 anyway. Bowl invites were sent out before December 7, and the committees were unwilling to bet on Pitt defeating Penn State. Thus, no good deed goes unpunished.

Is this Chuck Thompson, voice of the Colts/Orioles for many years, doing the announcing on the Okie-Neb game? And Oklahoma's Lance Rentzel....he of later Rams, Cowboys, Ice Bowl, Joey Heatherton, and "other things" subsequent fame. Neb's Kent McGloughlin later played for Raiders.
