Jon Bluming developed a mixed combined system of strikes, throws and groundwork. He called it Kyukushin Budokai. I don't know if Chadi has already made a video about this in this frame. It belongs to this judo complex. Gene LeBell was honored by his organisation with the 10th Dan. I have no idea what degree Gene had in Kodokan, in America (California) of course he got 10th Dan. Jon had respect for Gene's personality and his shown choke.

"Judo bums, here me one and all! It is one thing to fracture pine boards, bricks and assorted inanimate objects, but quite anothee to climb into a ring with a trained and less cooperative target. Chadi, thank you so much. This is an outstanding video breakdown of a legendary bout testing Judo against a professional heavy weight boxer. The pro boxer soaked his gi in Vaseline to make grip fighting the gi impossible. And he separated the padding in gloves to make punches more penetrating and had knuckle dusters on underneath his glove. He tried to kill Judo Gene Labell in the ring using these dirty fouls but Judo still proved superior and he went to sleep. At the time not everyone in America was familiar with vascular neck strangles to merely render a man unconscious and some of the spectators believed Gene Labell had killed the boxing champ so they nearly rioted until the pro boxer came back around and proved unharmed. Judo Gene Labell also publicly grappled a full grown black bear using his Japanese Judo & American Catch Wrestling. And he pinned the bear. After he friendly challenged Jun Fan Bruce Lee and submitted him the actor & Chinese boxing teacher began studying grappling from Judo Gene Labell and later show cased some of that training in the opening fight scene against Samo Hung in the film Enter The Dragon 🐉when he defeated Samo Hung with Newaza.

3:22 The second throw was a Harai-goshi, not a Tai-otoshi. For Tai-otoshi, the attacking leg is firmly planted to the ground whereas in Harai-goshi, your weight is on the back leg while the attack leg reaps in sync with a semi hip load. Gene's attacking left leg did slightly touch the ground, however, you can see how it functionally worked as a reap as he pulled the opponent onto himself following the turn.

A nice tribute to the legendary Gene Lebell, thank you. Don't you think these style v style contests only ever prove anything about the individuals engaging with each other, not really anything useful about whether one "style" is better than another? What is your opinion of that 1976 Ali v Inoki fight (refereed by Lebell)? Too many artificial rules IMO. An interesting area of research might be in how experienced hard nosed competitive MAists became such ardent students of the mature Morihei Ueshiba... not much talk of lack of pressure testing or resisting partners in those days: challenges were met and duly dealt with... similar to how Taijiquan has recently lost credibility as an effective combat system since Mad Dog Xu Xiaodong has been wiping the floor with so-called traditional MAists in China, but nobody bad mouthed Taiji when Cheng man-ching was around and successfully met all challenges... now Cheng man-ching v the Mad Dog would have been an interesting challenge!

It's a proven point whether the striker has the skills or not. At least 2 of Rhonda Rousey's matches has shown that. It's what led to losing her winning streak. The Gracies weren't fighting the strikers of today. It's why the Gracie's return fight to UFC failed. Nothing is always.

In this video the boxer 'appeared' to be wearing a gi or other clothing on his upper body? Wearing clothing on the top does allow a judoka to have hand grips to perform a throw or take down. 'Possibly' the outcome would have been different if the boxer were bare above the waist"? 'If' Milo Savage were to meet Gene Labell a year later for a rematch the outcome 'may' have been different? I was a judoka for ten years but never thought that judo was the superior martial art. At any given day one martial art could be the dominant one over another. Which martial art is best has always been controversial.

Womp womp…sound like a Charlie Brown character. Another 🤡 just like Michael Myers. Put some respect on the name. Could’ve, Would’ve, Should’ve. Guess what the results speak for them selves. Grappling, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Wrestling are all very COMPETENT martial arts. If you look at the UFC statistics they show that the most amount of UFC titles have been held by wrestlers, followed by BJJ, the rest are split up between Muay Thai and Boxing. Come on guys the truth is when comes to LeBell vs Savage read Gene’s book The Toughest Man Alive. There is a lot more to this story than a boxer putting a Gi on and getting choked out. Furthermore Gene LeBell mother Barbara Eaton was the HEAD of The Boxing Commission on the West Coast in the 50’s , 60’s, 70’s. Gene LeBell was a very formidable FIGHTER had experience training with Marciano, Muhammad Ali, Robinson and many another World Class Boxers.

There are many factors but being unprepared is one of the key. In the old times, there was no internet, fighters at that time have less knowledge about different martial arts. And I believe nobody have access to spar with people of different martial arts. Today, with the help of the internet and martial art world is wide open, fighters today know what to expect or have certain knowledge or ideas about different martial arts even if they don't learn them. Personally, my highschool have different martial art clubs and my country is multiracial so i gain access to different martial arts through my school/college friends. I spar with them, arguing and testing...and this is in the 90s. I doubt fighters in the US or western countries have the same access as I have especially in the 50s-80s. What I mean is, if you know your opponent are ignorant of your fighting style, you can manipulate the rules of the duel to favor you when you challenge them in those days, forcing them to sign the contract to follow your rules. But if it is a real fight, you won't dare to challenge any martial art in their own schools, because you yourself is ignorant of their styles. Today, you might be brave enough because you have all the conveniences to study them first.

This is probably one of the most citied and useless examples of the differences between two sports. It’s almost as ridiculous as the Ali vs Inoki. He was wrestling, the other guy was boxing. If it was old style boxing, before all the rules were set up banning wrestling, choking, eye gouging, kicking, bare fist, etc., which were all legal at one time, we all know what the outcome would be. Boxing eliminated all those things to highlight a certain skill set and make watching it more entertaining. This kind of nonsense just needs to go away as it means absolutely nothing.

Michael Myers it must be Halloween again because the clown is out to play. You don’t know how to lace your boots or tie your shoes. If you knew the “Toughest man Alive” he would have had you urinate all over yourself.
