I was listening to this broadcast on 1280 WGBF AM radio in Evansville, Indiana an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinal radio network on a bakelite 1950s Zenith tube table radio. I was a big time Cardinal fan. This was just a few weeks before I turned 14. What a weekend! The pennant possibilities were really wild. I never missed Cardinal game and that weekend was no exception. I was hanging on every pitch. Really really an incredibly exciting series!!! This was when baseball was still baseball, baseball uniforms were made out of linen and flannel not plastic, and Harry was at the peak of his powers, Busch Bavarian Beer, and the Cardinals were still playing in old classic Sportsmans Park (Busch Stadium). Oh to see the old right field pavilion again! Miss those times a great deal.

Growing up in Evansville in the 60's and 70's, summer evenings meant my Dad would be sitting on our back porch, listening to Harry, Jack and later Mike Shannon on the radio. I still prefer to sit on my porch and listen to the Cards on the radio. Really going to miss Shannon after this season.

What great memories! I’m a Whitesox fan and I’ll never forget when I was 14 and heard Harry for the first time in 1971. What a refreshing breathe of air Harry was compared to Bob Elson!! He was a genuine fan and spoke his mind about a game or player, JUST LIKE A REAL FAN WOULD. Every game was exciting, especially if you were in contention!

This is sure a great find. Born in 1953 in St. Louis I remember being in our backyard throwing a ball against the porch steps with the transistor radio on loud. Cards came from way back to pass the Phillies, but then the Mets played the Cards very tough, and the Reds almost won the pennant. I sure remember that Friday night game preceding it when Al Jackon beat Bob Gibson 1-0. I relive these games playing baseball strat-o-matic as I have the 1964 Phillies, Reds, Cards, and the New York Yankees. If the Reds had won this day, there would have been a three way tie with the 3 teams. The Yankees also had a comeback versus the Sox and Orioles. My favorites baseball book is October 1964 by David Haberstam.
@larryloveless29672 жыл бұрын
Correction. Should have said if the Cards had lost to the Mets with the Philliis winning there would have been a 3 way tie for first. Interesting the Reds manager pitched John Tsitouris instead of Jim Maloney this day. The Orioles got a bad break in the AL pennant race when Boog Powell was injured. The Sox had great pitching but were weak hitting. The Yankees did have good balance. Mel Stottlemyre made them even better. Whitey Ford got a sore arm in the Series and Ramos their good reliever ineligible. The Cards though missed Javier who in 1967 1968 was a great hitter in world series games so Maxvill played second base later the shortstop on those teams.

It's very sad that this broadcast misses the last two innings. What a day. I remember watching some of the Reds-Phillies on TV and I could hardly stand it it was so exciting. The whole weekend was unbelievable, starting with Gibson losing 1-0 to Al Jackson on Friday night.

The New York Mets were playing meaningful October baseball for the first time in their young history, albeit as spoilers. The Cardinals needed to win just one of three home games against the Mets to clinch the NL, and lost the first two. So it was all down to this game, and what happened with the Phillies in Cincinnati. Harry Carey really works the crowd in this game, through the magic of transistor radios and remote reports from Roy May at Crosley Field.

8avexp I always wondered how the playoff format would have been conducted.
@alpineinc15 жыл бұрын
@@maverick1956hk Not easily. Per St Louis Post-Dispatch 10/4/64, with a 3-way tie a team would have had to lose twice to be eliminated. It would've started on Mon 10/5 with Reds at Phillies, then Tues 10/6 Cardinals at Reds, then Wed 10/7 Phillies at Cardinals. If any team lost 2 by that point, the remaining 2 would have done a new draw until one lost 2 games total. If none lost 2 by that point (all 1-1), there'd be a new draw to determine the first 2 to play again, eliminating one of them, with the other playing the 3rd for the pennant. The World Series (which did start on 10/7), would have had to be moved up, with one off day planned after the playoff ended.

That was the game that eliminated the Phillies who were six games ahead--then lost ten in a row! Our California Lottery, by contrast, lost 59 jackpot drawings in a row since last June (if you follow our lottery drawings in Cali--lol)! The 1964 Mets were last under CaseyStengel by contrast.

Casey Stengel returned as Mets manager at the start of the 1965 season (per the plans he discussed on the pre-game interview at the start of this broadcast). He broke his hip on July 24 when stepping out of a car. He was fitted with an artificial hip, but announced his retirement from baseball on August 30. He said he had to retire because he could no longer run after the umpires to argue with them.

Yes, Jerry Gross was the backup man behind Harry Caray and Jack Buck on the Cardinals broadcasts at that time. Jack was probably gone doing a football game that Sunday. Jerry would normally only appear for televised games (which were limited to a handful of road games). Jerry would do the pre-game and post-game shows on television and a few innings of play-by-play on radio, as Harry and Jack alternated between the TV and radio booths. Jerry was also the radio voice for the St. Louis Hawks of the NBA during those years.

Mets third-baseman Charlie Smith homers in this game, giving him 20 (the most he would ever hit in a season). After the 1965 season, the Cardinals would acquire him and pitcher Al Jackson (who'd beaten the Cardinals 1-0 in the first game of this series) from the Mets in exchange for Ken Boyer. Then, after the 1966 season, the Cardinals would trade Smith to the Yankees in exchange for Roger Maris, who would be a part of their 1967 and 1968 championship seasons.
@JL-vs2zh Жыл бұрын
Roger Maris went 3 for 19 with a walk & a double for the Cards in the '68 series loss to Detroit. My most exciting childhood baseball memory is watching Game 7 on a little black-and-white TV in gym class (on a Thursday I believe, 10/10/1968). My coach (Mr. Pearson) was an avid baseball fan so it was required watching in lieu of dressing out!
