The first I heard Harry was when he did the Cubs on WGN. Yes he was a legend and entertaining but not the best announcer I ever heard. Listening to him on this, however, he was just TERRIFIC. Called the game briskly, with detail and enthusiasm. Now I can appreciate his greatness.

I was 11 in St. Louis when this game was played. We had the game on the radio in the kitchen. It looked bleak being down in the series 2-1 and losing 3-0 midway through the game the way Downing was pitching and I went outside to throw a rubber ball off the backyard wooden porch steps. I remember while in my own world like I was pitching a game my Dad suddenly came running out the kitchen door that Ken Boyer just hit a grand slam. I ran in to the kitchen with Harry Caray still going crazy on the radio.. Looking back this was also an amazing job of long relief pitching by Roger Craig and Ron Taylor. My favorite baseball book is October 1964 by David Halberstam written in 1994.

All those fans cheering for the Cards I am guessing most are old NY Giant and Brooklyn Dodger fans cheering against the Yankees

Even though my Yankees lost the game and blew the Series, how can I not love hearing Harry Caray when he was a solid pro.

The Yankees lead 3-0 until Ken Boyer hit a grand slam in the 6th to give St. Louis a 4-3 lead. Boyer's slam can be heard at 139:00 of this audio. The Cardinals won this game 4-3 to tie the series at 2 games apiece. They would eventually win in 7 games.

And the day after the World Series of 1964 was over, the Yankees fired Yogi Berra, and wouldn't finish in first place again until 1976. Yankee Stadium was reopened that year after it had to be closed for two years. Then came Reggie (yes, Mister October)!

Game 4 inning 6, was the turning point of the 1964 World Series. If sure fielding Bobby Richardson had been able to turn the double play on the Dick Groat double play ball by simply flipping the ball to Phil Linz, instead of having ball uncharacteristically stick in his glove, inning is over and Ken Boyer never hits his Grand Slam. And so, Richardson makes his rare error, Boyer connects, and the complexion of the 1964 Series changes completely on this one play. The Bobby Richardson boo boo, plus the Whitey Ford injury in game 1, that prevented him from pitching in games 4 and 7, are the 2 main reasons why Cards win the 64 Series. If 1 of these 2 things had been different, Yanks almost certainly would have won this particular World Series. Lady Luck most certainly favored the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1964 Fall Classic.

Martin Felsenfeld Firing Yogi Berra after the 1964 World Series was a very stupid decision by Yankee management. Hiring Johnny Keane was another stupid move. He had no business managing the Yankees. He was a St. Louis Cardinal, and was not respected as a Yankee by many of the players. By early 66, he himself was fired after starting the season 4-16. Yankees most certainly should have kept Berra as their manager. Horrible horrible decision to fire the man after winning the 1964 pennant, and almost winning the Series short of a couple bad breaks that went against them. (The Whitey Ford injury in game 1, and the Bobby Richardson boo boo in game 4).

@@frederickrapp5396 I was 12 years old in 1964, but still recall this series as pivotal in the long run: the end of the old guard and the start of the modern era, excellently chronicled in David Halberstam's epic "October 1964." I loved the Yankees (especially Mickey) but living in Omaha was more of a Cards fan. St. Louis has had bad luck as you mention above. Front & center: Don Denkinger's blown call in 1985. But they exorcised the demons by the gigantic miraculous comeback in 2011.

They were on radio while Phil Rizzuto and Joe Garagiola were on TV, and vice versa. Eleven years later, Garagiola and Gowdy worked the 1975 World Series, one on TV, the other on radio, and then vice versa.

In 1968 Caray got to announce the last 4.5 innings of game 7. I want to know how he pulled that off. Had the Cardinals come back he would have gotten to announce his team winning the World Series.

If only Richardson could've gotten the ball out of his glove in the T6. If they get the DP, Yankees win. Even if they just get the force @ 2B, it changes things. Interesting stat in this game: Each team used 3 pitchers, and each team had just six hits. Downing got the Cards 1-2-3 in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th innings and was pitching quite a ballgame. As Peter Golenbock said in Dynasty, "What happened to Downing in the top of the 6th inning was not entirely his fault." Howard had called for a fastball with the count 1-0 on Ken Boyer, because St. Louis couldn't see Downing's heaters. But the lefty shook off the sign, and threw that changeup.

Richardson was never comfortable working with Phil Linz in turning the DP. It showed. He much preferred Tony Kubek, but Kubek was injured and did not play for the entire 1964 World Series.
