In the latest episode of Generation Gap, Davin and Matt choose their favorite performance coupes. Requirements: two doors, four seats and plenty of scoot. Davin picked a Dodge Coronet 500 with a 383 V-8 engine, and Matt chose a BMW M3, equipped with a 3.0L straight six. Which would you pick?

M3 is a better car. Dodge is cooler. You go for the looks? the dodge. You go for the high performance? M3 all the way.

let me guess, the winner will be the dodge. why do they even talk about performance? they might as well just talk about the way the cars look because thats all people seem to care about.

I choose what I would rather own and drive. That just happens to be the dodge. I think its just that there is a bigger fanbase of american muscle, not lbased on any facts just an assumption since the vote never seems to be close.

well if everything was based off performance do you think ANY old car would win? The dodge handles like a boat and drinks more than my alcoholic father. It's a mix of styling and performance. The M3 utilizes more plastic which saves weight making it accelerate faster, handle better, and cheaper. Now the dodge is mostly steel and is built like a tank, it will march on for years but, suffers in performance compared to the BMW. Now I could drive that M3 all over and maybe 2 people would notice. If I drove that Dodge people would stare and take photos. The car represents a generation that has passed, it represents quality before quantity, when a man could get off from work and go to the garage and make adjustments and perform services. It was man and machine. You and 383 V-8 monster with a four on the floor and tires to burn. Now some BMW's don't even have a dipstick.

I hate to be negative but I also have to be honest about the way I see this show. First off both guys come across as somewhat douchy fanbois. Davin more so than Matt but both to some degree. That douchiness softens somewhat as the show progresses but it's always present. That doesn't endear either host to me. It's a subjective comparison between apples and oranges and ultimately doesn't add anything to automotive journalism. They drive the cars around a bit, bash each others preferences and give little ground. It comes down to what each person likes more than anything and that really doesn't say much about the cars but more about individual's likes/dislikes. More than anything though the show feels forced, scripted, and boring. Take the cars to the track, take 'em to a 1/4 or 1/8th mile strip and put them through their paces. Take them to a cruise in or a car show or some sort of get together and see what other people have to say about them. Just do something entertaining.

***** Corvettes handle with the best out there, and consistently put down faster lap times. European sports cars are more expensive, and a lot of that money goes into handling. They're great, but dollar for dollar (euro, pound) american cars handle just as well.

I was a kid in 65' in 2nd grade . I wasn't a fan of Mopar styling then. But they do look badass with the proper rims and setup like this one. In 65' I was more into Fords and GM cars, the 57 Chevy in back then was a big favorite. I just stared at them with envy when sitting next to one at a light. Ironically my first non hand be down car that I bought was a 69' Ply RoadRunner in the mid 70s. My how things change. Currently drive a 17' SS Camaro 6 speed. Loads of fun that will run circles around todays BMWs in performance and handling.

For me it's the Mopar mainly for the sound and feel of the engine in them they make you feel something under the hood and to me that's more enjoyable but it wouldn't be a bad thing to get it to corner like the BMW :-)

I had a muscle car in HS, and now own a e36 M3. Yeah the muscle car is louder and got more attention (dodge challenger) but the M3 is no joke. It is subtle till it blows your doors off. Stock they run to 60 a little over 5 sec, and go over 150mph. With some mods, they give e46's a run for their money. The are also track monsters, because they are light and have torque

they dont have much torque, so personally i wouldnt say you could claim that as a attribute
@StratTheKonvict
@StratTheKonvict 10 жыл бұрын
tom neve Compared to a four banger they have torque. Compared to most other European cars they have torque. To compare an E36 M3 to a '65 Coronet on torque alone is borderline moronic, so for you to say that the M3 having more torque than most other EU manufactured vehicles isn't an attribute is like saying "The L85A2 has the capacity to feed from 60 round magazines, thirty more than a comparable rifle like the Steyr AUG but I'm going to pick an FN Minimi because it can feed from a disintegrating belt of 200 rounds" without taking into account the fact that carrying the Minimi is like carrying a brick shit house with your hands alone. More of one thing isn't necessarily better if you sacrifice everything else in order to attain it.

It don't matter if it's American or German or Japanese or w.e, old cars will always be more fun. New cars are good as every day drivers bc of the safety systems and traction control and blah blah but for fun, the older cars are the best. Every single friend of mine that owned BMW has ditched BMW garbage because it lasts up to the warranty barely and then it breaks down. All have Lexus and Tesla now. Me? MrKeyboardCommando I do agree with your sentiment, however. I was watching their "banter" and wondering if they had laboriously written out a script beforehand and were now mechanically reciting the lines. I like the premise of the show, but it is so lackluster. They tootle along on public roads at a leisurely pace, accelerating moderately on occasion to get a rumble out of the engines. Their personalities project neither wit nor charm. Their interaction is wooden. They talk about significant differences in the cars in terms of performance, but nothing they do demonstrates those differences.

It is interesting that you would choose these two cars, both "sleepers" of different eras. Both require an educated eye to recognize how special each one is. My brother helped build a 69' GTX, that was in Hot Rod magazine and I was impressed, but I must vote for the BMW. The age of the Dodge makes it collectable now, but the BMW still needs time for that kind of recognition. I am of the generation of the 50's and cars of the late sixties will have a place in my heart, but by the mid to late 70's BMW was quietly tearing it up in europe, and eventually got the respect they deserve. This is my first vote for Matt.

SmileyLegoGuy That is actually just a bad rumor. Many muscle cars actually corner amazingly well even with the old technology. If you have a driver that knows what he's doing there is no problem. As far as gearing there are so many different transmission and rear end gear options on muscle cars that any type of comparison without real world testing would just be bullshit.
@crunchymexican2910
@crunchymexican2910 10 жыл бұрын
exactly. the charger in 1969 came with three different rear end gear types. as for transmissions, they are extremely interchangeable.
@number3665
@number3665 10 жыл бұрын
Noah Schut Yep and any of them could be bought as an option back then. You could get a base trim model with barely anything on it, the biggest engine they offered, transmission of your choice, and rear gears you desired without question. All of that plays into how the car runs and drives and so does the driver. You can't customize new cars to that extent and with all the computers they basically drive themselves. Regular shifting and power shifting make a whole lot of difference. But guys that don't really know cars wouldn't understand that =P lol.

I love how the old dude makes up stupid reasons not to like the m3. I know he specializes in pre 1974 cars but does he even grasp the concept that auto companies kept making performance cars after 1974. His attitude might just be an act for the show, but he can't seriously be a gear head and not know anything about modern performance cars like this m3. PS he's really starting to piss me off with his "everything was better back in my day" arrogance.

Totally agree I though that bringing the E36 was a terrible idea the E46 would have been much nicer it's a great car and if the could have gotten in with the CS package aaaaaaa magic I want one bad this is one I'm my area it's a 06 m3 with CS package it's like the perfect combo last year of producing and best options just it's 26k! Tad high

His attitude is for the show. he has to be stubborn and defend Classics in any way he can while bash the competition. I understand. However, I do like how the younger guy will admit he likes the classics, because I mean who doesn't? I rather them not have kind of fake attitudes trying to make the show interesting and just be open minded and fully enjoy both cars. But there's nothing wrong with a little teasing

Davin, I agree with you that pre-74 cars are just downright cool, but can we have something on the next show that isn't American? Don't forget there is a rich history of awesome pre-74 cars from around the world: Jaguars, Datsuns, MG, Volvo, Toyota, Honda, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Mazda, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Triumph, Jensen, Mercedes, BMW... How about we compare a BMW M3 to a BMW 2002 pre-74? How about we compare a Miata to an MGB? If you're too stubborn to stick to American, how about choosing something from the 50s or 40s? It's almost a complete cop out to solely choose 60s muscle cars. Why not compare an AMC inline 6 sedan to a modern day sedan?

I owned a 1973 BMW 2002 and after tricking it out was a fun car great pick up and handled corners well. I Drove it From Michigan too California and had to get rid of it because it would not pass Smog. Now I have a 1968 Dodge Polara and love it, it turns heads and handles great in a straight line. I am sticking with Mopar these days.

Next time will you please take the cars to a track? The dodge isn't a performance car, it's the automotive equivalent of a teen pop star. Even in a straight line that m3 would molest the dodge. Did you guys actually research either of these cars before this review? The heritage category should have been m3 all the way. Go read the history of both cars, the M3 is a racing legend and the dodge is a low tier muscle car. When people dream of muscle cars this isn't the car they dream of.

Didn't you know that this channel is sponsored by a classic car insurance company? Of course they're going to stack the deck for the classic to win every time! And, if you are rating purely on collectability and appeal to classic car enthusiasts as far as "balls out style", then the classic is *going* to win every time. It's like trying to sell Blue to a room full of Red lovers. Of course they're going to stick with Red.

Eric Strickler What are you talking about dude? The 60's Coronets are just as badass as the road runners and the chargers, and for that matter, ANY classic Mopar is sought after. You need to do some research yourself if you think the Dodge isn't a performance car. Mopars ruled the strip from the late 50's through the early 70's for the most part.

I don't get the hype behind BMWs. They're expensive to maintain, drink gas like a drunk drinks beer (high octane only, mind you!) and are boring to drive. I mean the car does a lot of things decently, good ride, sporty enough, okay power and medicore looks... but it's so boring, I might as well be driving a Civic or Toyota. I'll take a muscle car or any of the BMWs competitors (Mercedes, Jaguar, Cadillac) any day of the week. This is coming from an E46 owner btw

Once again, im sure next episode the Dodge will have won because of the rediculous, oversized, and closeminded American Muscle fanbase. Even though the BMW is the last word in drivers car and has every single aspect of performance on its side. The muscle car is loved because people are taught to love it. All muscle cars really are is Cheap speed and good looks with little thought given to anything else. I admit that the Muscle cars of the sixties have something really magical about them, and the craftsmen who work on them today sre amazing artists. Its also perfect if all your interested in is straight line performance. But personally, id take handling over speed any day. I also want a reliable product built to be of the highest quality possible. So idea for next episode! Acura NSX VS ________. But really if the NSX loses to whatever its up against, i really have no hope in there every being any competition in this series.

But you can't judge a car strictly on how it performs. Low riders exist because some people care more about how their car looks, than how it performs. That being said, I wish that these guys would have a little more fun with the cars. Do some burnouts, take the cars to a drag strip, or a road course. Let the cars do the talking. Plus it would make a more entertaining show.

to be honest I see it like this the M3 is a good car, may not be as interesting as the Coronet but mechanically sound, while the Coronet is a legend amongst it's following and will always be the car most people will get cause their heart told them to. It's kinda like choosing that old E-type from the classifieds over a newer Audi TT, sure the TT is a great car and a lot more reliable, but if most car enthusiast had money to waste they would choose the E-type every time.

malevolenceXXXensues You say that as if the M3 isnt interesting and doesnt have its own following lol. I didnt even know the Coronet was anything special apart from it being around in the 60s. Seems like everying america made in the 60s is worshipped on a pedistal. But thats my point, is it special because it was any good? Or is it just special because its from pre 1974. Will admit that California and the Emissions dept. f*cked American automobiles in 1974 and has been openly f*cking the United States automotive market ever since. They murdered the classic muscle and the land yatch, and have kept us from having wonderful cars like the Civic Type-R or the Porsche 959.

Adam Othman Heh, the irony of that statement, is that the BMW is a beastly drift machine .. once you disable the traction control. Heck, if you get into the nurburgring taxi and ask the driver nicely, he/she'll happily give you a few drifts of your life. There are soime fantastic sections of that track for some crazy drifting at redicilous speeds. Offcourse, there's also a very dented guardrail in that section - But that's another matter. :D
@adam1othman

Jesus45U hahaha the guard rail..... however you can't deny that the germans want more traction through a corner... the serious performance machines.... and i mean really serious don't like drifting or tire smoke at all. hence why the bugatti has 4 wheel drive and the sly amg black docent like it when you drive with clown shoes on

Adam Othman Well, grip can be fun as well, feeling the g-forces maul your body as you go trough a swift set of corners can certainly put a smile on your face as well. :) Also, by that account, there's no serious performance machines in america then ? They all just go sideways, like .. _all the time_ ? Just kidding, I know there are. :) Just like not all german cars are all about grip, in fact, the Mercedes Black that you mentioned would fit better in with the muscle car crowd. As for being german, and having fun ? Porsche RUF fast as hell! Enjoy. :)

Interesting comparison. My dad has always had both Mopar muscle cars and BMWs. I currently have a BMW, but I love driving his 71 Dart. We also both autocross our cars, so with the right setup, old muscle cars can stop and turn pretty well. I would love to have either car in this video, but I think the Coronet is so much cooler. It seems 90% of the driving I do is just normal, boring driving/commuting. I love my car on a good twisty road, but cars like the Coronet make the other 90% of driving SO much more enjoyable.

I think they've summed it up pretty well. By virtue of being an older car/classic, the Coronet has more character......individuality, quirks, flaws, call them what you will, and although there were common styling cues, there was more originality and the ability to almost infinitely personalise your every day car off the production line. I'm not claiming accuracy here but let's say you could pick from a Coronet 500 with a 383 or 440, manual or auto, 2 or 4bbl carbs, bench or split seats plus interior/exterior colours and whatever else was available on the order sheet. Still a valid Coronet 500 The M3 is probably the more competent all round car of the two, with almost 30 years of automotive development since the Coronet - think discs, ABS, fuel injection, economy, safety. But "character"? Well, an E36 M3 comes with a straight six, a manual box and injection - the same as every other M3 so you're only personalisation is coupe/convertible, paint/trim or blitzing the aftermarket catalogues. You could buy a 318iES and stick "M" badges on it but it wouldn't be an M3. What about in 2025?......how many M3s will be on the go and how will they stack up? Me?............Coronet every time.
