The golden days of supercars are gone forever, many of the potent machines created during the Sixties have been updated and improved by their ingenious owners. This 1966 Chevy Malibu street machine is a highly- modified version of the famed SS396 Chevelle and features a lightweight fiberglass flip front end. The tubular sub-frame supports a multi-carbed 427 cubic inch “Ratmotor”. Old school trends in drag racing are reflected in the lightweight steering, heavy-duty rear suspension, and light aluminum racing wheels.

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from 1964 to 1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel-drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in February 1997.[1]
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. With the discontinuation of the compact Cruze in March 2019, the full-size Impala in March 2020 and the subcompact Sonic in October 2020, the Malibu is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
A red 1967 Chevrolet Malibu
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

FYI: It's originally a Monogram kit, number 2219 released in 1977 PRIOR to their merger with Revell. It may seem somewhat simplistic, but in that era the Monogram business model dictated that "less is more." Great, fun to build kit!

Some times it is. I picked up a reissue curbside kit of a 63 Chevy II station wagon. Reissue has a separate hood but no engine. I'm personally trying to decide if I want to buy a 3D printed I6 for the kit or just build it curb side.

@@Milner62 they offered a v8 I believe. Guys dropped in small block engines. If you want a straight 6 the AMT 51 Chevy has one with hotrod upgrades. The AMT 1960 chevy pickup also has a nice inline 6 cylinder engine .

@@briancarsen6315, Depends on the year of Chevy II you are building. For '62 Chevy II only had two engine options, a 90hp 153 I4 and a 120hp 194 I6. For '63 Chevy II retained the same I4 or I6 engine option. For '64 Chevy II got new engine options, a larger 230 I6 replaced the 194 I6 and the 195hp 283 V8. For '65 Chevy II got a dual exhaust 220hp 283 V8 and 250hp & 300hp 327 V8 With the changes to the body style of the Chevy II between 1962 and 1965 it would require modification to convert a '62 into a '64 or '65 unless you are just going for a hotrod build but for me I want to do a family car build since its a station wagon. I also thought about just seeing if I could find the 153 CID I4 in resin and do a 4 cylinder build Chevy II which would be a bit more unique as a model. On the '60 Chevy pickup is the I6 in that kit complete with a hole for the front metal axle to pass through? This Chevy II Nova station wagon started life originally as a metal axle curb kit but with being reissued there is a under hood now and there is a guy online selling the resin engines complete with the hole for the axle to pass through. But if the Chevy pickup kit has the engine as an optional engine I would consider that seeing as I have been eyeing that kit as well to add to my stash.

@@Milner62 as for the inline 6 on the 1960 chevy pickup...no hole thru it. This might be good for you cause the hole could be in the wrong place. Use 60 chevy engine and hold it in with one hand and poke the metal axle in til it hits the motor. Drill a hole. You are set!!

When previously released they were 2 separate kits- one had the "letter box" style scoop , centerline wheels, high rise inlet set up and was always black n flamed on the boxart.The other had a blower the other scoop, differant wheels and was always red on the box art.Its good to see some of the other bits in this release.

They are actually more like CRAGAR SST's, Super Street Tricks for the original black kit and this kit. Centerlines have the rivets placed closer together. Cragar SST's were steel where the Super Tricks were aluminum and used mainly at the dragstrip. Look up some old, early 70's pics of NHRA Pro Stock race cars. The black kit had a tunnel ram and the red kit a supercharger and slotted or "kidney bean " style wheels. I have both kits.

Indeed it is an old Monogram. It was everywhere when I started doing kits in the late '80s early '90s. Had been re-released a LOTS of time. Then, it was gone. And now it's back. Not really a 2 in 1 as you said, more like one kit with a couple of options. Seems the tires are new molding tho. Not my type of car, but it's a pretty kit. People that loved that kit can now have it again.

Yes Chris originally a Monogram kit which I built in the 80s. Two versions were released hence the 2n 1 name. But I wish they would have included the original 5 slot Mags from the red cover car. The tires used to be branded Goodyear Rally GT.

My buddy had the original release of this one from the 70's, the Street Rat (Red). It sat in his garage in the box for years. Over a decade ago he gave it to me and told me I could have it as I was a modeler. I built it up just like the box, put it in a display case and gave it back to him as a gift. Came out great! I really want to get this reissue and make it for myself. To bad the rims from the original are not there. But thats ok. Always love those Flip Front kits!

as you probably figured out, the " molding lugs", as you called them, on the bottom of the body are for the sidepipes. don't cut them off unless you don't want to use the sidepipes.

Most engines I have seen have the bell housing painted the same colour as the engine block. You paint your Testers silver enamel and just when I decide to ask you if that was your trademark, you paint the gearbox silver and leave the bell housing alone. Then you paint the bell housing gold -- bazinga! You got me! Then you paint the bell housing Testers gold enamel! With the gold out I would have painted the carbs Holley gold. Lovely job bringing all the detail in the kit.

So glad to see this one! I built this one back in 1978. It had the Centerlines (probably Crager SSTs, now that I think about it), BFGs, black paint over red interior. The hardest part was deciding between the dual carbs with velocity stacks or the supercharger. Velocity stacks won... Thanks for sharing this build!

The ride height is spot on, and all the details(except those graphics) could be seen in the streets of my childhood hometown. Back in the day I would buy the black version just for the parts for kit bashing, used them on many Monogram '69 Camaro's and the '70 Chevelle built as a youth...Nice to see it reissued

I am planning to buy this kit just for kit bashing parts. I have to admit I was a little disappointed because if you look at the 2 rear axles only the cover is present for dana 60 rear axle.. the 2nd rear axle is a Oldsmobile rear axle but doesn't include the cover for that kit. I am really disappointed. Plus the slotted wheels are missing. But there are a lot of kit bashing parts still there.

This is my all time favorite kit! Mostly because it is my all time favorite car, but also cause it is fun to build. I have done several of these over the years, even converted one into a monster truck with Bigfoot tires and wheels! I've chopped the top on one, made a convertible out of another, and have built a few more just stock w/ what came in the box. Great kit and many many fond memories. Gonna have to get this new iteration and see what I can do with it next. Thanks for the vid! BTW, I miss the 1/24 scale models, they really are the perfect size.

That is one tough looking automobile. I love the engine too. I ordered it and it's on its' way. I'm planning on doing it up with the same color scheme because it's just that pretty. I think I might use some Tamiya clear blue over chrome behind the headlights maybe just to add to the blue/white color scheme. I can't wait. thx Chris for the excellent demo.

Yep old Monogram kit. One came in black plastic w tunnel ram and one came in red w blown engine. Man the 70s n 80s were good and crazy with different subjects! Today is good because we're getting all the cars they never made..but those 70s kits!

Amazing kit! Several variations through the reissues! Same build, different paint and decal options! Looks like it means business sitting with other models on any shelf! Previously mold in black and I didn't bother painting the last one I had. Very shiny, even and clean without paint! Had a 55 Chevy street rod that became a cousin to this car!

All that is missing is the chrome tree sections with the slot mags, finned differential cover, automatic shifter and supercharger blower setup from the old red version. Then it would be a complete 2n1with parts from both the red and black versions.

I don't remember there being a difference between the rear difference cover on the black and red kit .I remember them both being chrome plated but not finned.. I do see that there are 2 rear axles in the kit but only see one cover .I would only be buying this kit for a kitbash project and one of the parts I really want are the rear axle

It was really a nice kit but no where near stock and I could never under stand why monogram never made a stock kit. I have made that kit at least six times. Mainly Monogram kits. The kit came in black, later on black or red. For some reason every time I moved to a new location It was one of the few models that got damaged. That's what happens when you move to new state. I'm back in WI to stay. I have one now that I have some parts missing, but with what I have in the "Parts Box" I will have what I need. I love your build. Hi from Manitowoc.

I built this kit in the late '70s like the box art, black with flames, red interior. Really fun kit to build. It's a '70s era "Street Freak" car, street freaks were retired gassers modified for the street or cars built to emulate '60s gassers. They were cool then, they are cool now.

When I initially saw that it was a two in one my hopes were that they included all parts to build both the red and black initial release versions of this kit. That said I am grateful that this kit is back on the market so that I can build it again but this time not hack it up. I owned the white box version of both the red and black offerings. I was a kid with no talent no I'm an old man with a little more talent. Thanks for covering this kit Chris I like what you did with it although I might suggest you use a little less superglue🤪

Always loved the big block engine in this kit. Loved the oil pan. Who doesn't like a big block Chevy with tunnel ram and dual carbs? There was a 30's/40's delivery van monogram kit that had a great big block in it. Not to mention the 1970 Chevelle SS kit from Monogram. I kit bashed the 1970 SS Chevelle 3n1 kit, taking the Supercharger and put it on this kit after a bit of hood modifications. I just left the scoop off. Always loved the Dana rear on this model, along with the 69' Camaro twin turbo kit from Monogram.

I know this is an older kit, but it definitely has some unique touches to it, like that engine bay assembly - don't think I've seen anything like that before. I remember seeing it in a Monogram catalog in the early 1990s in the black color scheme shown as the alternative on the box.

I know you're doing this for speed, but i would glue the two engine halves together and hold with a rubber band. the cylinder heads would be painted in aluminum (chevy had it in an L89 and ZL1 option) and after drying, i would put a skim coat of tan where the head mates to the block deck and before it dries lay on a bead of tube glue. Once it goes onto the block, the paint tints the glue and it sticks out like a head gasket does on a 1:1 setup (for water pumps, i put on blue magic marker so it looks like RTV gaskaseal). If i can saw the oil filter off the oil pan (when it's all one piece) i'll do it and cut a white or yellow parts tree to replicate an oil filter. If you pick up stock car kits for $5 at shows, you can find an appropriate oil brand decal to cut loose and put on it, and on primative kits like old AMTs or Johans, most NASCAR kits give you great suspensions for a Pro Touring look. you could also use their remote oil filter setups using the bungee cords often holding together new shoes or used to hold tags to pants--leave it black or paint it silver for a "braided hose" look and add the red and blue AN fittings with permanent markers. The engine plate could be sprayed aluminum for the pump and then the rest of the plate covered in regular aluminum foil since that's normal for these plates. Where it attaches to the front subframe (i usually cut out the square shaped sides by the firewall so the engine sides won't be hidden, and a dab of copper paint for the core plugs is a nice detail) is often red bushings, so you can paint accordingly. If you have a red parts tree left over from a red-molded kit, cut off the square number tags and glue them stacked together to replicate an MSD box for the ignition (or use what's in the stock car kit). I'im not a fan of primer since this isn't metal that's been sanded so it doesn't need to be filled or etched. On some models, primer can cover up tiny details like trim...but to each their own. Often I spray the inside of the body around the wheelwells black since many award-winning models forget this area, and if the car will be painted a light color i will give a quick, light layer of flat black on the bottom half of the body. this will darken a light top coat below the body lines, just as on a 1:1 car the bottom half is in shadow and darkens naturally. Finally i paint the inside roof interior whatever color the headliner should be (i usually go past the lower sidewindow opening because some interior tubs just won't line up). I agree with using the magic markers for the marker lights, i back them up with tin foil to act as reflectors. i also use a black marker to draw the windshield wiper blades on after painting the windowframes silver but before putting in the glass (i usually cut them separate, so i can put a sunvisor down on the driverside if i wish, but until then keeping them one piece can help when putting together a roll cage and wondering if it will interfere).

The "jacked up" all round "steet racer" look got popular in around 1966 when some did it to brand new cars even! Just like out of a 1966 Hot Rod year book- a era i love.This issue yes has a more later paint scheme.

This is obviously a reissue of the monogram 1/24 scale 1966 Chevy Malibu kit it came in two versions one with a super charged 427 Chevy it was molded in red the other was molded in black and had a 427 Chevy with a tunnel ram I remembered building these in 1977 I was 13 year's old Eric hinkle

Funny how I had built this kit as a Monogram kit back in the early 90's, I was saying to myself "no it's not, no it's not" with his assumptions. All in fun of course! Hood hinge, and the mount tabs for the side pipes ;)

well done. Those hoods were always a bitch when we built this as kids. Hard to get that flip hood to set correct. Glad i seen this. I may have snipped those tabs that hold the side pipes.

built this a LONG time ago, was i i believe, issued by monogram, i had the black one with centerlines, stock seats, dual quad tunnel ram, dont remember everything, was going into the navy back in 1985, and a whole lot went on in my personal life then, the red issue of this kit with the other scoop did not come out for another few years, i think 88-89 ish, glad to see it re issued, will build one again when i find it as a blast from the past, was just a kid then and really didnt detail it much, and have a LOT of ideas the chrome bellhausing and differential, the larger transmission says somebody who built a real one spent a lot of money with doug nash racing for thier five speed and quick change differential, there is a cunundrum with the tires though, seems as though mine back then had either more agressive rear tires, ( not big and little) or street meats on the rear, by my memory, 12-50-15s or blue streak dragway specials from the old days this was one of the faster pro street cars modeled back then, and a really cool blast from the past, cant wait to get one!

That's the 70s look and style. If you look back at hotrod magazines of the time it was gasser and street machines and later became pro street in early 80s through 90s a still early 2000s. Now it's pro Turing , resto mod, and Ratrod

You sure like using those rattle can paints, I never could master them myself for model building I just find using a airbrush puts out better paint jobs,
