The Sungold Sleeper! A very rare and special Rambler, sort of like a proto-SC/Rambler. This short wheelbase, relatively light 343 4-speed "Typhoon" likely surprised a few bigger-engined rides in its time. Also, the keen-eyed might notice the engine block was gold and not the better-known AMC blue. Thanks Lou, enjoy your week!!

I would love to add headers, and maybe lower-restrictions dual mufflers to that little beast! It sounds good, but could sound even more threatening! And 300+hp is, IMO, a requirement for a car to be considered a "muscle car"!...I would prefer this cool little car to the larger muscle cars of that era. It is interesting to note, that each division of GM made their own V8 engines, as did AMC back then.

What an absolutely beautiful car! Back about 1970, a buddy of mine and I were cruising around one night in his 1964 GTO With a 389 and a 4speed street racing when on highway on the way home a Rambler Scramber pulled along side of us. Blew the horn 3 times and all we saw was his taillights! That was the only time we got beat that night!

AMC, like Studebaker before them, made the something out of nothing. An overlooked maker of muscle AMC had some of the coolest muscle car's of the '60's. I’ve never understood why the 343 Rogue wasn’t a bigger seller than it was. It has all the right mechanical bits, and it’s a great looking car to boot. I’ll bet the 327 Nova outsold it 100 to 1. This is one of life’s mysteries, but I guess it’s the Rodney Dangerfield effect- AMC just never got any respect. Lou, if you ever get a chance to do a ride-along in this car, that would be a nice little addition to this video. I love this car, I’ve always wanted one, and now I want one even more! Awesome video Lou!!

Back in 1967 my best friends father hsd a small used car lot. They would purchase and resell many popular late model cars back then. We being licensed drivers we were conscripted to drive these auction purchases to the dealer lot. The owner really liked ramblers and many times I got to helm these v8 Kenosha sleepers bsck to the home base. These cars ran good, but were not bullet proof like small block Chevies. I once blew up a Rambler with a 327 motor by holging it to the floorboard for a few miles these things were fairly fragile compared to Fords and GM's, and I ran all of them through their paces from 1964-1970. If you want a reliable V8 to hot rod a Rambler may be fun, but almost any built small block Chevy wil out last it and blow it in weeds!

We had a 1967, black on gold, but our truck was also black. Had bucket seats, auto in the floor, v8 engine. It was geared very low and was fast as heck 0-60 and I used to really surprise guys in their Mustangs and Camaros. Top end was pitiful, top speed I could get was just over 90mph! But it was unusual, got a lot of double take looks, and it was a fun car. I can't remember engine size, perhaps 285, can't remember.

Lou I have never heard of this model Rambler. I was so hoping that this car story would answer the myriad of questions I had. Unfortunately that didn't happen. The owner left something to be desired in telling his car story. Lou you regressed to your usual Jack instructions and number plates. As a result I left this episode of MCS with more questions than answers. BTW the chrome wheels and red line tires look Identical to those on my dad's 68 Plymouth Sports Satellite.

This car could have beat the ss nova if AMC released the group 19 kit as a factory option. I seen a early test of the hi po 343 and amc paperwork had a rating of 322hp

Not a lot of these around. I don't think they built many 343 Rogues in 67.

@@loucostabile I enjoy seeing nice and unusual cars on the channel. Long out of the car hobby but if l was putting together a Rogue today I'd start with a 4.0 glock bored 30 over. With a 199 crank that gives 3.5 liters. Then junk the head and build up a twin cam read out of something close. Either a GM LQ-1 or an Infinity/Nissan V-8. Turn it into a potent autocross or track car.

How come there is no AMC logo on the front righthand side of the grill?

There's a "Rambler" on the left grill and "Rambler" by the right rear taillight. "Rambler" was their brand. Even the mirrors have an "R" on them. I don't think "AMC" is anywhere. The door tag says "American Motors Corporation."

Poor AMC!...If they had just begun to manufacture this type of smaller, but powerful car, in the very early 1960s, they would have sold a million of these cool vehicles!...But, they just were a little bit late to the party! The Rambler American had saved the company, in the late 1950s/early 60s...so they stuck with their "economy car" philosophy for a couple of years too long. Too bad, as in the later 50s, a few of their larger vehicles did offer powerful, AMC v8 engines...but they gave up on hp way too early!
