Close up view of this beautiful 1967 BSA A50 Royal Star 500cc Motorcycle.
The decision by Lucas in the late 1950s to switch production of the motorcycle electrical components (from magneto/dynamo systems to alternator/coil systems) forced British motorcycle manufacturers to completely redesign their engines. Triumph and BSA took the opportunity to move from pre-unit and semi-unit construction to full unit construction,), with the engine and gearbox together in an integrated casting.
At this same time, Bob Fearon, managing director, and general manager of BSA recognized the need for an updated look that built on the best features of the A10 but which would succeed in the potentially lucrative but competitive United States market. Working with Chief development engineer Burt Perrigo they developed the unit construction Star Twins. Launched in 1962 as the 500cc BSA A50 Star, the model was widely exported to the USA and Australia as well as becoming a top seller in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s.

As an 18 year old, I bought a 1968 A50 Royal Star in 1969. Mine had the much better UK handlebars fitted. I had it for 9 days before a moron, in a Ford Zodiac, came straight over a 'halt sign' and put me in hospital. After the bike had been repaired and I was able to ride again(6 months later), I kept it and enjoyed it for another 6 months, before buying an A65 Lightning. Vibration was always a bit of a problem on both bikes, where the coils used to break the fixing and the bike would go onto 1 cylinder. I got used to the fix, which was to put an earth direct from the coil body to the frame and rubber washers for the coil mountings. Apart from the crash on the A50, I have good memories of both my Beezers!

The Triumph Daytona 500 was famous worldwide and raced on pavement, dirt tracks, motocross, and the ISDT. The BSA 500 never enjoyed such fame. Even during its production it was a rare sight in the U.S. My dad had one. I wish he'd kept it long enough for me to ride it.
