ONE INDONRSIAN PLAYER WHO STOOD OUT TALL AND HELD IN ESTEEM WAS THE LATE FERRY SONNEVILLE DESPITE INDONESIA'S 1967 THOMAS CUP CHALLENGE ROUND 6-3 DEFEAT TO MALAYSIA BY DEFAULT AT THE ISTORA SENAYAN STADIUM. EVER THE SPORTS MAN HE WAS,SONNEVILLE WAS RECALLED AT AGED 36 TO DEFEND THE THOMAS CUP AT JAKARTA. IF WE WERE TO RECALL SONNEVILLE WAS ONE OF THE ARCHITECTS OF INDONESIA'S HATTRICK OF THOMAS CUPS FROM 1958 TO 1964. BUT IN 1967,DESPITE NOT HAVING PLAYED COMPETITIVELY FOR SEVERAL YEARS SINCE THE 1964 THOMAS CUP VICTORY SONNEVILLE OUT OF PATRIOTISM CAME OT OF RETIREMENT FOR THE THIRD TIME BUT THIS TIME WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE HERO OF INDONESIA'S 1958,1961 AND 1964 THOMAS CUP TRIUMPHS THIS TIME WAS BOOED AND JEERED BY HIS OWN FANS. IN THE FIRST NIGHT SONNEVILLE WAS BEATEN 15-9,15-7 BY THE 1963 MALAYSIAN OPEN CHAMPION YEW CHENG HOE.THE SECOND NIGHT HE WAS OUTCLASSED BY 1966 ALL ENGLAND CHAMPION TAN AIK HUANG. BUT DESPITE THOSE TWO DEFEATS SONNEVILLE DISPLAYED SPORTSMANSHIP OF THE HIGHEST CALIBRE. I WOULD NEVER EVER FORGET THE SPORTSMANSHIP OF SONNEVILLE WHO CAME TO THE DEFENSE OF THE FALLEN HERO AND FOUR TIMES ALL ENGLAND CHAMPION EDDIE CHOONG WHO WAS BLAMED BY THE BAM PRESIDENT HEAH JOO SEANG FOR MALAYA'S 6-3 DEFEAT TO INDONESIA IN THE CHALLENGE ROUND IN SINGAPORE. JOO SEANG HIT OUT AT EDDIE CHOONG WHO WAS THE SKIPPER OF THE MALAYAN 1958 THOMAS CUP TEAM FOR BEING LACKADAISICAL AND COMPLACENCY BEING TAKEN OVER BY LUXURY.A TEARFUL EDDIE CHOONG HAD TO BE CONSOLED BY SONNEVILLE WHO THEN REPLIED TO JOO SEANG AT THE NIGHT'S DINNER,"WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EDDIE CHOONG?WIN ALL THE TIME FOR EDDIE HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR MALAYAN BADMINTON." FERRY SONNEVILLE WAS A REAL SPORTSMAN AND A GENTLEMAN. AT 36 PLUS HE WAS COERCED OUT OF RETIREMENT TO PLAY FOR HIS COUNTRY IN THE DEFENCE OF THE THOMAS CUP IN JAKARTA IN 1967. SONNEVILLE WAS RECALLED SEVERAL TIMES BY THE INDONESIAN BADMINTON FEDERATION(PBSI)TO STRENGHTEN THE INDONESIAN TEAM.HE WAS SUCCESSFUL IN THE 1961 AND 1964 THOMAS CUP CAMPAIGNS.IN THE 1964 THOMAS CUP FINALS IN TOKYO HE DEFEATED THE GREAT ERLAND KOPS IN A VERY CLOSELY FOUGHT MATCH.BECAUSE OF SONNEVILLE INDONESIA WON THEIR THIRD CONSECUTIVE THOMAS CUP IN 1964 EDGING FAVOURITES DENMARK 5-4. BUT WHAT STANDS OUT MOST FOR FERRY SONNIVILLE WAS HIS SPORTSMANSHIP AND HIS HUMILITY. HIS VICTORY IN THE MEN'S SINGLES IN THE MALAYAN OPEN IN 1955 AND HIS THREE THOMAS CUP TRIUMPHS WAS OVERROUGHT BY A VERY TOUCHING GESTURE IN JUNE OF 1958. IN THE AFTERMATCH OF INDONESIA'S DETHRONEMENT OF THOMAS CUP KINGPINS MALAYA IN SINGAPORE WITH THE FORMER WINNING 6-3 IN THE CHALLENGE ROUND FERRY OF ALL PEOPLE CAME INTO THE DEFENSE OF THE MALAYA THOMAS CUP SKIPPER EDDIE CHOONG WHO HAD BEEN SCAPE-GOATED FOR MALAYA'S DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF INDONESIA. EVER THE GENTLEMAN AND THE SPORTSMAN FERRY HIT OUT AT THE THEN BAM PRESIDENT HEAH JOO SEANG WHO BLAMED EDDIE FOR MALAYA'S THOMAS CUP CHALLENGE ROUND DEFEAT TO INDONESIA.HEAH HAD LAMBASTED AND ACCUSED EDDIE OF GIVING AWAY TO LUXURY AND THE REFUSAL TO TRAIN HARD UNDER COACH WONG PENG SOON.AN INFURIATED EDDIE BURST INTO INCONSOLABLE TEARS .BUT FERRY CAME TO EDDIE DEFENSE AS OTHERS FAILED TO DO SO. FERRY HIT OUT AT HEAH AND SAID:"WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EDDIE CHOONG WIN ALL THE TIME?THIS MAN EDDIE HAS DONE MORE FOR MALAYAN BADMINTON THAN ANY OTHER." THAT WAS HOW GREAT SONNEVILLE WAS.A REAL GEBTLEMAN AND TRUE SPORTSMAN TO THE LAST.

Again, thanks so much for this footage, mynahbird. Besides the way the whole thing ended (or didn't end) one of the curious things about the final was Indonesia using Ferry Sonneville, who was clearly past his prime, in one of the first two singles slots. Given the one-sidedness of his losses it is hard to believe that he was a stronger player than either Muljadi or Darmadi who would have been available

Yes that was the only time that Malaysia beat Indonesia in front of the their fanatical and partisan fans at the Istora Senayan in a Thomas Cup tie at Jakarta.The only victory Malaysia had achieved against Indonesia in the latter's home ground. Although Malaysia won the 1967 Thomas Cup challenge round by default 6-3 it was worthwhile as they had to face the hostile Indonesian fans who packed the Istora Senayan to the brim. Malaysia had led 4-3 with Aik Huang easily dispatching Ferry Sonneville by 4 and 2 but saw their 4-1 lead being cut to 4-3 with Rudi Nio beating Yew Cheng Hoe in straight sets and Muljadi did the same to veteran Teh Kew San who was the skipper of the Malaysian team. But Malaysia had the advantage in the two remaining doubles and were counting on 1965 and 1966 All England champions Tan Yee Khan and Ng Boon Bee to deliver the winning point against Muljadi and Agus Susanto but it was not to be as the rubber set had to be abandoned as the Indonesian fans became more unruly and uncontrollable with IBF secretary Herbert Schelee trying to restore order and calm but to no avail.And Schelee did the right thing by abandoning the match

Mynah Bird it was a fact.The Malaysian players were accorded out of the stadium by tanks as they were being subjected to threats by the Indonesian fans.In fact the Indonesian fans had invaded the court and that forced IBF secretary Herbert Schelee with no choice but to abandon the contest The rubber set was not played as there was pandemonium at the Istora Senayan.

Mynah Bird yes it is true that the Malaysian players were threatened by irate Indonesian fans but to say that all of them were involved in it it is not true.Learn that the Malaysian team had to be escorted out of the Istora Senayan by tanks. As for Erland Kops he often complained that he just cannot focussed on his play because of the constant heckling and tauntings by hundreds of Indonesian fans at the Tokyo Gymnasium stadium.

Indonesian fans created a din? Thats an understatement! the indon fans invaded the pitch and threatened the Malayan players just like they did to Denmark in 1964!
