This was the challenge round for the 1967 Thomas Cup between Malaysia and defending champions Indonesia at the Istora Senayan in June 1967. For Indonesia they had home ground advantage and badly wanted to retain the Cup for the third successive time in front of their vociferous and partisan fans. But by the mid 1960s Indonesia was a fading badminton power as the heroes of their three Thomas Cup triumphs in 1958,1961 and 1964 had aged and not the force they once used to be. Whereas Malaysia had a young team that had took the world badminton by storm from 1965 to 1967.Especially Tan Aik Huang who had won the All England the previous year.In the 1966 All England Malaysia had multiple success in winning the men's singles through Tan Aik Huang and the men's doubles with Ng Boon Bee and Tan Yee Khan.And not forgetting too that Malaysia had defeated Indonesia by 5-4 in the semifinals of the men's team event at the Bangkok 1966 Asian Games.This was a morale booster for Malaysia ahead of the 1967 Thomas Cup finals at Jakarta. But it was not all plain sailing for Malaysia prior to the challenge round decider with Indonesia.They had to contend with the hostile Indonesian fans who sided with Japan and Denmark.Malaysia won both the ties 6-3 and 7-2 respectively but what awaited them in the challenge round was more challenging and dramatic. The score read 3-1 in favour of Malaysia in the first night of the contest.Aik Huang scoring a straight sets winning over the fading 36 year old veteran Ferry Sonneville who had been lured out of retirement.But the Sonneville of 1967 was not the Sonneville of 1964.Sonneville surrendered to Yes Cheng Hoe the 1963 Malaysia Open champion 15-9,15-7. But then the young dynamo Rudi Nio Hup Liang tied the score beating Aik Huang easily in straight sets.But Malaysia prevailed in the next two doubles. The second night was even more dramatic with Aik Huang outplaying Sonneville by 4 and 2 but Hartono then narrowed the score to 4-2 by scoring a straight sets win over Cheng Hoe.Then Muljadi outlasted the veteran Teh Kew San 18-14 and 15-2 to narrow the score at 4-3. So the next doubles match would decide whether Malaysia would win the Thomas Cup and ended an eight years Indonesia's domination of the Cup. As it turned out the unruly and unsporting Indonesian fans flashed their camera lights on Ng Boon Bee and Tan Yee Khan in their match with Agus Susanto and Muljadi.The Malaysian pair had won the first set easily at 15-2 and were cruising to victory in the second set leading 10-2.What happened afterwards was poor sportsmanship as some section of the Indonesian fans began to taunt and jeer at Yee Khan and Boon Bee. This was where the IBF secretary the honourable Herbert Schelee had to step in.If not Boon Bee and Yes Khan would have lost the tie had it being continued.Schelee did the right thing by abandoning the two doubles ties and ordered that it be replayed at Auckland New Zealand but Indonesia refused and the Thomas Cup was awarded to Malaysia by default 6-3.

Malaysia belum pernah sekalipun mendapatkan medali emas Olimpiade. Bandingkan dengan Indonesia. Itu saja sdh membuktikan siapa yg lebih hebat. Belum lagi bukti2 yg lainnya. Termasuk berapa kali Indonesia mendapatkan juara dalam ajang Thomas Cup. Jadi bagaimanapun fakta dan data yg berbicara.

Malaysia never enjoyed supremacy with their old school badminton.It only caught up with the rest of the world after technology transfer from China coaches in the late 80s and early 90s.Just as in everything else,Malaysia make great Jaguh Kampungs.

Chan Kon Leong was the coach of the triumphant Malaysia's 1967 Thomas Cup team that defeated Indonesia by default. Kon Leong,of course was a former Thomas Cupper having featured in Malaya's 1949 and 1952 Thomas Cup triumphs and had coached the Indian national team in the early 1960s. But Kon Leong by 1967 was not well though and was to die the following year.But then he will be remembered and credited for Malaysia's 1967 Thomas Cup success.

@@yiseng4602 lol1 Chan kon Leong will also be remembered for dying in poverty in the slums of Gombak Lane in Jalan TAR KL.it sparked outrage and eventually paved the way for professionalism in badminton where athletes could make a decent living out of coaching and playing badminton.

@@mynahbird20000 remember that Chan Kon Leong was,in fact suffering from chronic diabetes.Manager Khir Johari tried all he could to help but by 1968 Kon Leong was a very sick man.He did not live to see the Thomas Cup coming back to Malaysia when the Cup was retrieved from London in the All England championships. All the same,Kon Leong in fact was one of the members of Malaya's first Thomas Cup winning team at Preston in 1949 together with Wong Peng Soon,Ong Poh Lim,Teoh Seng Khoon,Yeoh Teik Chye,Ooi Teik Hock and Law Teik Hock.And he also featured in Malaya's successful defence of the Thomas Cup in Singapore in 1952.

@@mynahbird20000 in those days as a player Chan Kon Leong and the players of his era did not monetary,incentives,bonuses and perks.They also had to buy their own equipment. Yes Kon Leong and his compatriot Wong Peng Soon were shuttlers from the pre war era.Their best badminton years were disrupted by World World Two. In fact both Kon Leong and Peng Soon were both of the same age having born in 1918.They were not young when they travelled to England for the 1948/1949 inaugural Thomas Cup at Preston.Then they were thirty one years of age. It was freezing cold in England and yet the Malayan drubbed Denmark 8-1 to become the first winners of the Thomas Cup. Kon Leong no doubt always in the shadows of far more illustrious Malayan greats such as Peng Soon and Teik Hock but he was a superb doubles player in his heyday. Peng Soon of course even played in the 1955 Thomas Cup series in Singapore and even gave the stylish Finn Koberro a love set at an advanced age.He was 37 the same year he won his fourth and last All England title beating his team mate Eddie Choong in the final. But unlike Peng Soon,Kon Leong had far more success as a coach.He coached the Malaysian to victory in the 1967 Thomas Cup won by Malaysia by default.
