Bugs always run great when they"re maintained.JC Whitney even had a kit where you could mount a pulley to the crankshaft,wrap a rope around it and start it like a lawnmower.Some of the garden tractors made today,have about the same horsepower.I had 4 or 5 bugs.Engine could be changed in half a day,just required a floor jack.Nice vid!

My Dad put one of those pulleys on his '63 due to a starting problem. Mom was a teacher and we went to school in it .I remember her asking the older guys to pull the rope to get it started several times. We got a used '79 Corolla soon after.

Back in 1917 my great grandfather LS swapped his Dodge Brothers and it actually ran worse. Go figure.
