1968 Johnson 6hp will it run?

The 1968 Johnson 6hp I got in a big Craigslist freebie Score. Will it run, will it work?

i have a 67 68 71 an 78 years of this 6 horse, i wont use anything else but these old OMC motors, the look the sound the feel they have is not of any other motors ive ever had, i use them on my 7.5 foot fiberglass skiff an jonboats, i wish you fun times with it i bet itll out live us both. stay blessed out there buddy, i miss living on a lake :(

What do you run for plugs in yours, I fouled a "marine" style plug the other day, wiped it off and it is fine.

@@woodysgarage469 i cant remember off the top of my head they are champions, i mix mine 40 / 50:1 depends on the season an i only use quicksilver TCW3 2stroke oil, you should be able to tell them its a 68 johnson 6r an you need the champion brand plugs for that year an model they should hopefully give you the right set, there are a few heat ranges tho, make sure there gapped right, mine are in my storage on a stand undercover burried in the back

@@woodysgarage469 second after thought reply here,, also doing alot of ideling ull foul um out pretty fast to its good to get er up on top an scream it for a few till you hear it clean up perfect then you should be good for another 15 or 20 minutes of putting around

1970 model 6 hp here. Ran it yesterday. They're hard to beat. Music to ears. I see you fabricated a shift lever. I had to do same. Used wood off broken hedge shears and JB. Weld. Notched to fit tight on bandsaw. Let it cure and it does job very well. Yours looks good too. Enjoyed watching.

Tim, I just started mine up yesterday too. First pull. It is purring without doing anything to it at all. I guess those shift levers are notorious for breaking.

@@woodysgarage469YesSir. Apparently they are a well known and documented weak spot. Pot metal bubble ridden little wanna be levers that break if you look at them cross eyed. Used handles are $100 plus. Plus the aggravation of disassembly. Well it was my fault it broke. I put it on side in back of pick up and it rolled over about 10 years ago. I finally built a nice temporary fix and now it rides shotgun in front seat with me. Hahahaha. No more pickup bed for this motor. I’ve enjoyed Evinrudes and Johnson’s since I was a kid. Grew up with them and still have a few to tinker with and use. The quality is unmatched and the simplicity makes them easier to keep around and work on. Like I said, enjoyed your video and will look for more. The best to you.

I just purchased an identtical 6 HP model a couple days ago and the model number plate on it is a 6R-69M. It's a 1969 year model. Hope that helps

I have the 71 version of this boat. Good engine. The water pump on mine works considerably better if the water in the bucket comes up to at least the level of the impeller even with a new impeller. Good luck with it!

I have the same motor, plate with the serial number and such is on the throttle side of the motor where it attaches to the boat.
