These broadcasts will lessen the loss of Vinny after my 43 years of tuning in to the master, and for this I am thankful to you.

+Patch Adams what are some of your most memorable moments in 43 years of listening to Vin?
@patchadams14737 жыл бұрын
+Classic Baseball on the Radio , you know the most memorable times for me was when Vin would talk about all the old legends like Ted Williams, Stan the Man, he told some great stories of good old Casey Stengel that just engrossed me as a kid, many moons ago offcourse. When I speak about Vin, I like to say that unfortunately, I have never met him, but I have "known" him for 4 decades. Keep up the great work!

Me, too! I found the Dodgers-Giants game from '57, where Vin calls the action over the final four innings. He just sounds like VIN! Who better than Vin to comment on the sniping between Giants and Dodgers fans down through the years?

The Dodger broadcast fails to note this but this game was the 81st win that year for Houston in 1969, the first time in their franchise history that the Astros did not post a losing a season record at 81-81 after seven years of running up losing records.
@charleswest91815 жыл бұрын
I remember that was very important to me at the time. I did not want the Astros to lose those last three games and have another losing record. And it started a nice string for the Astros. In the last 50 years (1969-2018) the Astros have only had 18 losing seasons.

Correct, and this was after their horrifying 4-20 start.

I remember this series from its place in "Ball Four". Bouton probably didn't realize that this was the Astros' first-ever bid at a winning record, only that they had missed out on being a dark horse in the division race and they were fortunate to get this 81st win tonight so they would be guaranteed at least a .500 record.

@@patotmaster3484 In 1970, my parents took my sister and I to Montreal to see base ball! I was 10, loved base ball and was autograph hunting in the Queen Elizabeth hotel where the Astros were staying. There was very little base ball on TV back then, and I had never seen the Astros play, hence I was not sure of who in that hotel was an Astro. Thus I asked every young man if they were an Astro. A great man, pitcher Don Wilson told me who he was, sat down on a couch with me, talked base ball with me, and pointed out Astros, and I would scamper to them and get an autograph and return to the great Mr. Wilson. Don Wilson, a great man! I will never forget your kindness!

You can do that game, too--and it was September 30, 1984--a denominator Sunday (many calendars as you know prefer to disguise the dates 23/30, and 24/31, as fractions--lol)! Ron Fairly, I believe did part of that game--he was an Angels' announcer for a few years! It was played in under two hours (almost impossible to do anymore).

I liked the 1969 season for the Dodgers. They had come off two losing seasons and promoted a bunch of young players. The "kids" came through and they had a winning record with a great promise of things to come even though ultimately most of the current crop of young players didn't pan out or were traded Nonetheless, they were still on their way to successful decade in the 70s. Most importantly for me was in 1969 they reacquired my favorite player, Maury Wills.
@fatfreddyscat57673 жыл бұрын
I thought Grabarkewitz, Bobby Valentine, Teddy Sizemore and Bill Sudakus among others would be longtime mainstays. But then came Lopes, Garvey, Cey, Fergie etc.

Silly Astros traded Morgan, Billingham, Menke, Geronimo to Reds for Lee May and Tommy Helms November 1971. Astros handed Reds a part of the future core for the Big Red Machine in the future. Astros GM H.B. Richardson should have been fired on the spot.
@davidlahn73907 жыл бұрын
Funny Jack Billingham (Montreal 69 expansion draft pick from Dodgers) went in that Staub deal. Three teams gave up on Billingham before he figured it out with 2 rings.

Houston was still very much a provincial town in those days and many black players and other players had no interest in working and living there.
@charleswest91815 жыл бұрын
David Lahn.....While I agree with you that the Reds got the better of that 1971 trade, it wasn't a total loss for the 'Stros. They traded Lee May for Enos Cabell and Helms was traded for Art Howe. Cabell and Howe were instrumental on the 1980 Astros NL West title. Plus we got Morgan back for that season.

This reminded me of two things: 1) the fact that Vinny had no problem with a little a bit of silence in the broadcast not feeling the need to fill every second with his voice. Contrast that with virtually every other announcer especially recent and current ones. 2) that I've always hated Don Sutton.
