1969 Ford Torino 428 Cobra Jet 4-Speed Convertible - Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode 340
While many of the cars here in The Brothers Collection appear new or nearly new in condition, there’s a place for those who’ve been driven over the years. This super cool 1969 Ford Torino GT is a great example, and who wouldn’t want to drive a 428 4-speed convertible every day?
You gotta love cars like this 1969 Ford Torino GT, with all its well-earned flaws and wear accumulated over 90,000 miles of gear-shifting, top-down, Cobra Jet powered fun. The look is spot on, as triple-black big-bodied Muscle convertibles always look menacing, and the GT details add to the attitude of this street brawler. The gold lower GT stripe brings a bit of race car imagery, but by keeping it on the down low, the car maintains a serious appearance. Chrome styled-steel 14” wheels are similar to ‘69 Mustang wheels, as are the painted racing mirrors.
We particularly dig the hood scoop, which is again very similar to the Mustang scoop of the time, complete with rear-facing turn signals for a head-up display of sorts. And that scoop is the real deal, with a functional ram-air setup helping the 10.6:1 compression 428 Cobra Jet V8 to crank out 335 HP and 440 pound-feet of torque. It’s hooked to a 4-speed manual transmission for good shifting fun, and for dumping the clutch and making lots of tire smoke on command. And if you think that 335 HP sounds low for a hot-cammed, heavy-breathing big block, you’re not alone. These CJs were known to make closer to 400 HP, but it’s believed Ford fudged the numbers to give 428 CJ Mustangs a better power-to-weight spec for NHRA competition.
This car was sold new at Spitler-Demmer Ford in Wayne, Michigan for $4337.75, and according to the Marti report, there were less than 200 similarly equipped ‘69 Torino GTs built in ‘69.
Sitting in the big Torino GT is like easing into your favorite lounge chair… the upholstery is stiff from over 5 decades of elements, but it feels right. A white-knobbed 4-speed handle emerges from the full-length console. The dash layout is clean and easy to read, and this one features an AM/FM radio installed from the factory. Oh yeah, the clock still works, too. GT cars had a sportier suspension system for more road feel, and disc brakes bring things to a halt.
This Torino has seen some paint work, but is largely original and unrestored, and we like it that way. You can often tell when a car has been taken apart and put back together, as some are never as nice as the first assembly. This 428 Cobra Jet convertible is a great example of one that is right on, just the way it is.
As enthusiasts, we look at cars like this with awe and reverence, but to most, it’s just an old used car. Can you imagine stumbling across this one parked under a used car lot sign? THAT would be a great day. Thanks for watching, don’t forget to subscribe, and we’ll see you next time on Muscle Car Of The Week!

These cars were too heavy to be serious competition back in the day, but could still surprise a few people in hotter cars at the stoplights, or the freeway on-ramps. I was a long time owner of a 1970 Torino Cobra 429CJ.

69's were lighter (in general) and FE engines are lighter than 385 Blocks. A 68' or 69' 428 CJ/SCJ should beat a 70' 429 CJ/SCJ, everything else being equal, of course.

My older brother bought a brand new '69 Fairlane convertible (same body style as the Torino) off the show room floor. It was beautiful and fast. Black Jade with a white interior and a white top. I loved riding in that car with him.

Hi Kevin, All you need is the swagger of Clint Eastwood, the way he talks & curses everyone & you too can make your version of " Gran Torino " Absolutely stunning convertible, I was hoping you would put the top down so we can see the difference between the top up & the top down. Looks like the Brothers need to build a quarter mile drag strip near there warehouse so all there muscle cars get the chance to get to top gear. Another great video again. All the best for 2020 & remember if you come to Australia love to show you around. Your number 1 fan in Australia Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia 👍🇦🇺😀

I recently read that the 60's Fords set a bit low in the rear to create the illusion of the car accelerating hard. Not sure if this engineered design concept is true, but when I had the springs re-arced on my '68, I had them set to 1.5" higher than stock; Just looks better. It's funny how EVERY SINGLE TIME the 428cj or 429cj advertised horsepower number is mentioned by ANYONE, we have to follow it with the disclaimer about how it's NOT the actual horsepower number. This Torino is sweet! Yes, it's indeed rare to see a black on black ragtop. For some reason, they didn't sell a lot of Torinos in black. This old girl has been looked after over the years. The Mustang and Torino (Fairlane) shared a lot of parts, so the scoop, for instance is not just similar to the Mustang's, it's the same part number.

I had the same car but a hard top cobra jet, 4 speed, posi with 3:50 gears would go pretty good.Mine had all the smog garbage off it and hooker headers. The car would fry the rear tires at will. They were way more powerful than people realized.

Love the burnout near the end.... Cobra-Jet says "Melt the tires? tell me when to stop" On a more serious note, this might be a Super Cobra-Jet car, the standard Torino Cobra didn't come with the functional Ram Air, the SCJ delivered with the functional Ram Air, the 428 SCJ carried upgraded internals. The VIN number would designate, Q for the CJ, R for the SCJ.

I'm a Mopar man, but ALL the Detroit muscle cars of this era were BOSS....that's it.......'nuff said... Very nice ride. Yes, Ford did fudge the HP numbers, one reason was NHRA, but I also feel that by having a lower advertised #, the insurance rates would be less.. the CJ is closer to about 375 horses...for sure.

Beautiful car. Despite the so called poultry sum of $4337. That was still considered to be medium priced money in 1969. An air conditioned 69 Pontiac Catalina sedan went for about $4300 back then. This car has everything but power windows and air conditioning. If it had those options the car would have cost about $4850.
