In this episode the troubleshooting continues. I make some small changes but we are not out of the woods yet. Still have not nailed down the actual cause. Need some help on this one. Fuel is my nemesis. Enjoy

The fuel leakage you mentioned may point to the fuel in the bowl boiling, or float set too high. jimgee2676's suggestions about checking fuel lines and filters is excellent. If you haven't been into the fuel tank you may want to; the sending unit/pickup screen might be clogged up. If that unit is on the side (it is on B and E body cars) make sure you don't have too much gas in it before removing the sender, and do have a new rubber gasket and screen when you open it. You might also unhook the fuel line at the carb and run it (through funnel, hose, whatever) into a measuring cup while cranking the engine to make sure you're getting a steady and sufficient supply of gas. You could also remove the air cleaner when the engine is stopped with the problem and listen to the carb (maybe with a stethoscope or the old screwdriver trick) to see if you hear boiling. You can also slowly open the throttle blades and look down into the manifold to see if its dry or very wet (boiling gas will often overflow into the intake, as will fuel if the float level is too high). By many accounts, modern gas, especially in the more heavily regulated EPA attainment areas _sucks_ for resistance to boiling and vapor lock. Ethanol is part of that problem. Do you have the Carter BBD that came on those engines? If so it might be worth rebuilding it and trying it. BBDs won't make the power that equivalent Holleys can but they are very reliable and of course the carb would be a match for the engine. And in my experience less likely to have gas all over the outside... best of luck!

This is all great advise. Thank you so much. I will work through the list and see what we find. I did previously clean out the tank and put a new sender in it. I like the idea of gravity feeding the carb, as it seems sometimes there is zero fuel in the filter.

maybe fuel is getting too hot or dirt is in the fuel filter or fuel pump is going ...im curious to see what the issue is and how you fix it ...ive got a 70 fury convertible with a 318 and ive had them same issues and i gave my carb a overhaul and changed my fuel filter and fuel pump and my troubles went away

I am glad your issues are resolved. Recently talked to Holley and made some changes. I hoping for the best.

Is it possible that the carb itself is junk? I've seen brand new ones out of the box that aren't able to be tuned. That could be the whole issue. Doesn't matter the brand.

It is. Not original to the car. It is a 73 318 of unknown origin. The engine and trans were just sitting in the car without any connections at all when I purchased it. It seems like they may have swapped it, but never got it running. I got it running and drove for like 8 months before the original breakdown in Daytona 2 years ago. Wow, has it been that long?
