I bought a brand new Boss 302 in 1970 with full trim. Drove the car for 500 miles and had it Dino tuned at motion performance in Baldwin, Long Island. The rear wheels produced 402 hp. Back then, we didn’t care about cops or street racing. Raced many cars which surprised many because of the awesome power and now red lined at 7200 rpm. Had no problems with 440 6 pks, chevelles, 340s, or street vet. The only competition came with the Camero z28 only to find out after the street race my float valves were severely leaking my Sunoco 260. I adjusted the float and asked the Z if he would go again. He said no. All above is true. Now I have an 08 Roush GT 350, 4.6 Dino at 408 rear wheels. Car is in mint condition with only 56 k miles.

I love the '70 BOSS 302 paint scheme the best. I own a '70 MACH 1 with the same paint colors as the BOSS 302 in the video and came with the same improved suspension. IMO, the '70 BOSS 302 is superior to the '69 because although its intake valve is still so huge that it kills low RPM torque, the '69 intake valves are even bigger and hurt low RPM torque even more. My first car was a '71 Mach 1 351C-4V. It looked very similar to the BOSS 351 but in stock trim, its wasn't as quick. Changing cam, carb and adding headers fixed that.

@@CJ-ib2jy The 70 BOSS 302 is probably my favorite Stang ever built. That little 302 is criminally underrated at 290 horsepower, just like the DZ Chevy 302 in the 67-69 Z28s. Just to add a few details. The shaker hood, spoiler, slats, and Magnum 500 wheels were optional. Most had flat dog dish hubcaps and trim rings when new but the Magnums seem to always be added with a restoration. Another item is that, while the only '69s with the fenders scoops omitted, no '70s had the scoops. I had a high school teacher who was a big Mustang fan. He ordered the first one ever delivered to our local Ford dealer sight unseen, a 260 automatic coupe. He traded that on a '66 GT fastback 289 HiPo, then a '69 Mach 1 351W 4-speed, and finally a lime green '70 Boss 302. He added the shaker and spoiler and also an interior group which had some Mach 1 features, like woodgrain trim and upgraded seats. He married and traded it on a new Ford pickup.

The "shaker scoop" was NOT a standard feature of '69 or '70 BOSS 302. My '69, nor my friends '70 had ANY hoods scoops. The one in THIS video must have been custom. FYI, the Boss Mustangs that raced in the '69-'70 trans-am series had NO scoops, hence the reason that the stock 302's did not have them as purchased. Also, I would like to point out that the FACTORY STOCK cars were more show than go! What REALLY "woke up" my '69 was a set of Doug Thorley "tuned" headers, porting and polishing the heads along with "matching" the intake ports! After these "mods" the throttle response was FANTASTIC! I traded the 302 for the 351 Boss when it came out in '71. The 351 did NOT impress me even with the same mods. I wish I would have kept the '69 302. As they say: "live and learn"!!
@hotwheel66636 жыл бұрын
I wonder what the actual Hp numbers were on the 302 Boss?
@TheOzthewiz4 жыл бұрын
In PURELY STOCK form, NOT much over 300 at the flywheel! Those FANTASTIC "semi-hemi" heads were stifled by the stock exhaust manifolds. A set of "tuned" tube headers allowing scavenging of the exhaust would easily push HP into the 350 range. I know because I've been there, done it!

A Ford guy forever, it is my understanding that the same era Z-28 was an almost exact copy performance wise of the Boss 302. Even had the same number of cubic inches of displacement at 302. At the drag strip, on the track, top end and braking were all pretty much dead on between the two. So it came down to brand loyalty. You couldn't go wrong with either. I had the desire but lacked the money to own one. But the same could be said of the ACE based Cobra, the Thunderbolt of a couple years earlier, the big block Galaxies, the performance 'Stangs of any displacement, trim or objective. Knew Mopar and GM fans of like minds. Those were the days to be a car guy. Having money would have made them even better. Most of us didn't.

The story in the video about how the BOSS 302 got its name has been told a lot but its not 100% accurate. Larry Shinoda reportedly did say he was working on his boss' car when he was designing the '69 BOSS 302 but he said that because the car would be marketed as the BOSS 302. According to a book titled _Boss_ _&_ _Cobra_ _Jet_ _Mustangs;_ _302,_ _351,_ _428,_ _and_ _429_ by Dr. John Craft, the name SR-2 was bounced around but Shinoda hated it. Ford then decided to name the car the Trans Am Mustang because it would be raced in the Trans Am races. But when Pontiac beat Ford to that name, Shinoda decided on the name BOSS 302. He knew that in California, young people had started using the word boss instead of cool, like, "Hey, that's boss!". After Shinoda educated executives on the double meaning for being high performance and cool, they enthusiastically agreed on the name. And to be consistent, mustangs that would house Ford's new 429 HEMI were named the 429 BOSS, even though the motor had been known by different nicknames such as the Twisted HEMI, Blue Crescent HEMI and the Shotgun.

It's a great looking car but it has many flaws. A 3:90 rear with a heavy four speed externally shifted transmission a five speed would have been a huge improvement. The 302 was low on horsepower and heavy it at least could have had aluminum heads plus stainless steel headers and throw the battery in the trunk. The car handles bad it's like driving a boat, my 2500hd truck handles better, the steering box is bad and the power steering , if equipped, was way over boosted and was a poorly engineered external add on. Heavy steel wheels. Heavy 9" rear on leaf springs with heavy rear drum brakes. Have I said heavy too many times the car is heavy. I laugh at the prices people pay for these cars .

He said that the Boss 302s had domed pistons, so basically small block Ford Hemi
@briancabral98 жыл бұрын
No, Domed pistons were common with many street racers back then and could be put in just about every motor and displacement. The Hemi is due to its hemispherical combustion chambers making the head castings huge also giving the Chrysler Hemi another nickname, the Elephant Motor. Fords Boss 429 had a similar design to the Hemi and was also a very large motor forcing Ford to have the Boss 429 be modified by K Kar Kraft to be able to install the 429 motor. it was nicknamed the Semi Hemi.
@CJ-ib2jy6 жыл бұрын
The BOSS 302 was a SEMI-HEMI - same combustion chamber as the 351C-4V and 351 BOSS. Although larger, the street version of the BOSS 429 was also a SEMI-HEMI. The race version of the BOSS 429 was a full HEMI.

SEMI-HEMI because of the canted valves.

I once had an old guy tell me with all the confidence in the world, that Ford actually stole the Boss name from Chevy, before they could use it on their own car. This guy worked in both Ford and Chevy factories back in the day. I have never seen or heard this anywhere else, so not sure if it was just an assembly plant rumor or not. Can anyone verify?

Mach1 Q ....my uncle graduated high school in June 1966 and went to work a month later at the Ford plant here in San Jose, Calif (it was actually located in Milpitas bordering SJ to the north) where he worked on the Mustang assembly line...ended up working for Ford 40+ yrs, owned multiple Mustangs, and he never mentioned anything like what you did here....

I'll have to wait until all the Boomers die off until I can afford one, unfortunately that means I'll be gone too.

BS. Those 302 were screamers . Know a guy that had a 70 grabber orange Boss and he raced a 71 440 6pk 4 spd challenger and only lost by half a fender. Gave up 138 CI,s and only lost bu half a yard. Pretty damn good in my book.

i'm just tired of ford guys thinking the mustang is the end all be all of all cars ever made, sorry but they are not that great, they're not bad, but there are much more powerful, faster, and better looking muscle cars, and i have watched all of the MCOTW videos and mustang vids out number all other specific cars by almost 2 to 1 at this point. most of the mopars shown have been hemi 'cuda's, which are awesome cars, but i wanna see some more b bodys or challengers, 440s and 383s, or 396 and 454 chevelles, or a 389 gto, there is plenty of cars in the collection to show, we don't need to see another mustang for a few months. i wonder if they have a sport fury commando with a 413...
@MuscleCarOfTheWeek8 жыл бұрын
Not everyone digs all cars, which is the way it should be. The MCOTW stats are currently 152 videos with 17 Mustangs. We hope we'll be showing you more cars that you dig, even if you have to sit through the occasional Mustang. At any rate, thanks for checking out the show and taking the time to comment!
