I have a friend who's lived in the Denver area all his life. He said that in 1970 he was looking for a hi-po Ford to buy, and one of the dealers had a Grabber Blue and a Grabber Orange Boss 429 in his inventory available for sale. He offered to sell them to my friend for $3800 each, one or both. Doesn't he wish now he'd taken up the dealer on the offer.

In 1971, I checked out a used 70 Boss429 with 5,000 mi., at a Ford Dealership. The price on it, as I recall, was $5,000.

I wonder if this is the car I saw as a teenager in Millbrae Ca. I saw a car under a car cover in a warehouse. I lifted the cover and saw the Boss 429 on the quarter panel. It had 14,000 miles on it. My friend and I were shocked. Blue with white interior. Awesome

Gorgeous cars, but the Boss 429's were lazy on the street. Depending on how you look at it, either the heads were way too big, or the cam and displacement were way too small. Add 100 cubes and a cam, and they really come around nicely.

We can thank the Ford NVH people for the performance deficiency. They wouldn't sign off on a "leaned-on" Boss 429 for street use, so Ford had to detune it before the NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) dept would sign off. I can remember at the time there was a car magazine, "Super Stock and Drag Monthly" which specialized in Fords. They had an article titled, "What Can You Do To A Boss 429, ? At the time, the word was getting out that the Boss 429 engine promised way more than it delivered. They said the cure was to GO BIG on a replacement cam and it would do wonders to it.

The 429 was engineered for high revs.....that is why it did not do well on the street.

How could it be worth more repainted than original? Gotta question the decision to repaint it. Or is the paint hiding some real issues?
