First of all, Dempsey had a metal boot that aided his kick. I'm much more impressed by Jason Elam and Matt Prater's kicks and we all know that Seabass and Automatica could hit from 70+, but it's very rare that such distances are even attempted in an NFL game, so the longest FG record doesn't mean that much. There were basically no kickers in the 60s and 70s who could hit a 70+ yarder with the power and trajectory to get it over the offensive and defensive lines.
@joekoe974 жыл бұрын
I still feel this is the most impressive achievement on a football field. He beat the previous record BY 8 YARDS, did so to win the game, did it at the lowest elevation of any football field, and had half a foot to boot. The half foot was a huge advantage. He combined the power of the toe kick with the consistency of a soccer-style kick.
@majorplothole2620 Жыл бұрын
@@elibaumann9718 they actually disproved that.. he had a massive disadvantage. The block he had to replace his toes, actually led to less accurate kicks - when you look at his overall percentage in his career he was under 70% completion rate (iirc) - which means, that 63 yarder, which sailed straight on through - that was a miracle. that was the best kick a man could make and he did it. The league would later LITERALLY move the field goal posts, and then ban any player who wasn't grandfathered in (So literally, just Tom Dempsey) who had a physical impairment from playing. The commissioner at the time legit had it out for him, and that's where we have those ideas that "oh he had an advantage cuz he had less foot" - I believe it was the Myth Busters who legit proved that was incorrect.

I saw a video several years ago of Tom Dempsey talking about a memento he kept from that kick, either the ball or his shoe or something he had hanging on the wall in his house from that kick. Back then players didn't make enough money from football to last their whole life, so Tom said he had been working a sales job since retiring from football. He said his job had its good and bad days, and when he was feeling down after a bad day, like he just wasn't good enough that day, he'd look at that memento from that kick and say to himself "Well, there was one day when I wasn't too bad."

The record field goal length at that time was 56 yards, Dempsey broke the record by 7 yards. I love this recording because you can actually hear the thunderous thud of his foot hitting the ball. One of the lions said he was walking back to the locker room, thinking they had won, and he said it sounded like a cannon going off when Dempsey kicked the ball, now I know what he means. This might be one of the greatest records ever set because Dempsey was in a situation where he had to break the existing record by 7 yards (12.5%) or they lose. How many other cases has a record been broken in a do or die situation? And where else have you ever a heard a record in professional sports being broken by over 10%? Great story.

One highlight was the Thanksgiving Day game a couple weeks after the stunning loss to the Saints. The Lions rallied from a 14-0 deficit to mighty Oakland to win, 28-14, at Tiger Stadium. Charlie Sanders with two spectacular TD catches thrown by Greg Landry. But getting back to the Saints-Lions' game: New Orleans was a laughingstock for years in that era. I'm 66 yrs old; this is THE single greatest play in Football, Baseball, soccer, basketball, hockey, etc in the history of mankind! The announcer forgot to tell u, the previous record was 57 and that’s a huge part of the story (not 1 highlight film mentioned that!)

What a great kick. 1970 was the year, i recall also, that Jim Obrien kicked a field goal on the last play of the super bowl to win it for the Colts

Yeah, January 1971. O'Brien's 32-yard boot secured the Baltimore Colts' win over the Dallas Cowboys, 16-13.

No doubt, correct - the greatest kick in NFL history, one that can never be surpassed. His name went down in history and in the minds of anyone alive (I was 13, will never forget him).

This is the only time I can remember Don Criqui shouting so loud that he lost his famously low, pointed delivery. The cameras didn't even cut to a proper field goal view, I'm guessing because they expected the kick to be short and they wanted you to see just how far short of the goal line the ball fell.

billny33 I was saying the same thing. His ‘microphone tv voice’ is fake, no doubt - but it’s the best ever!

Loudest calls I've heard: * Carl Yastrzemski's catch (April 15, 1967). * Dwight Evans: Game Six, 1975. * Doug Flutie's Hail Mary (the radio call was better). * Andrew Benintendi's catch against Houston (2018).

@@steveprestegard5151 Criqui also did the original "Miracle in the Meadowlands" game. He references Dempsey's kick at the end of the clip. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2iQnKKjgdB1qas

Eight years later, I believe Criqui was doing the Miracle at the Meadlowlands game and referred to this as an equally astounding finish, said he "almost fell out of the press box."

I remember watching that game with my dad in the Detroit 'burbs while visiting my grandmother (she had one of those new-fangled color TVs). He was happy with how things were looking for the Lions with two seconds left. I also remember the color leaviing his face after Dempsey sunk his kick lol! Thanks for posting the clip.

The Lions offense headed for the showers, and laughed. Then they heard a "BOOM !!!" (You can hear it in the video.) A huge roar came from outside, and the Lions said, "He MADE IT???"

I was watching that game as a 13 year old kid. Something said don't become a Lions fan. Been a Raiders fan ever since, I would luv to see the Lions win since it's my hometown team. There are 3 things I thought I would would never see in my lifetime the Lions in the Superbowl would complete the bucket list. I'm 64 years old. But when it comes down to it Just win Baby go Raiders!
