This is how baseball should be. None of these "6" wildcard teams and this stupid interleague nonsense. Back in 1970, there was just one playoff series in each league to decide the NL and AL champions and who would compete in the World Series. And the two World Series teams did NOT play each other in the regular season which made the World Series far more interesting

Curt Gowdy was very good friends with ABC's Roone Arledge who was just starting Monday Night Football in 1970. Arledge tried to get Mr. Gowdy to be the announcer for MNF but NBC wouldn't let Mr. Gowdy out of his contract.

@@johnhenryclark911 This was called the "Quebec Crisis" in Canada in 1970. The second diplomat (Pierre Laporte) was ultimately murdered and found in the trunk of a car. The Canadian Prime Minister at that time (Pierre Trudeau who was the father of the current Canadian Prime Minister) invoked the 'War Measures Act" and rounded up anyone thought to be sympathetic to the kidnappers (a separatist group from Quebec called the FLQ). It was a pretty tense time in Canada at that time.

We were Oriole Fans....my father always hated Oriole reliever Eddie Watt and I never figured it out until a few years ago. I remember going to Game 4 with my Father. The Orioles, leading the Series 3-0, were looking to sweep. Ahead 5-3, in the 8th, we lost 6-5 on a late home run. About 50 years later I looked up who the pitcher was, it was Eddie Watt. Oh.

Johnny Bench subsequently had a lung cancer scare in 1972 after a routine CXR picked up a lesion. He had surgery that caused a lot of muscle damage in his back even after healing. The lesion turned out to be a fungal infection that was thought to have started when Bench was growing up in Oklahoma (where cryptococcus is common). Bench admitted that the surgery affected the way he swung the bat and he was never as productive again as he was in 1970.
