I really admire when people restore 'basic' cars. It costs about the same to do as a more collectible, performance car but without any real promise of financial return. It makes the hobby so much more well-rounded. Not every car at a show needs to be high-performance or exotic to be interesting. Big thumbs-up !!!

I admire you for your statement. I get so sad that it seems that so many people just restore cars for their return investment. When I go to car shows, I always flock to the orphan cars of AMC because they were different. I don't want to be a sheep that follows. And an AMC owner will never be a sheep! Love your comment.

I agree completely! I am the second owner of an all original '73 Ambassador. I bought it from a lady who was 102 when she passed away and drove it well into her 90's. I love that thing. I'm debating whether I want to do a mild restoration (barely needs it, but it would be a lot nicer if some things were redone) or just leave it alone. I'm leaning towards just leaving it alone since it is for all intents and purposes all there.

The 71 Gremlim looks like new, with a 253 straight 6 and 150 HP, what a joy to see. The Webb's are a lovely couple and it's mandatory for Gremlin owners to have a sense of humor, because nothing looks like a Gremlin. It's a beautiful car and with all that HP it must to fun to drive. Thanks Lou.

Oh man, I can't believe I came across this video. I had the same colour but with the 258. I bought the car used in 1973 for $1,600 and drove it for 9 years when it got totaled by a guy coming through a red light. I added red paint around the recess in the back by the gas cap and also on the top of the fenders, plus wider rear tires. A guy I knew had one with a 360 in it. Thanks for sharing from Newfoundland, Canada.

@@loucostabile Not much to my story. It was my first new vehicle, paid $2,300.00 for it new, it had a 232 6 banger and a 3 speed tranny. It got decent gas mileage and, since it had a 30 gallon gas tank, it got me through the gas shortages of the early '70's. However, someone sat on the hook and dented it, the clutch linkage went out in 3 years, the valve cover gasket leaked oil and more. I traded it in for a new 1975 BMW 2002.

In 1971, my dad bought two Gremlins at the same time from the same dealership. It seems strange now but the local newspaper wrote an article about it. Even though the same model year, each drove and rode differently. Like most cars made during that time, it was unsafe -- bad steering, tires and braking. Auto engineering has come a long ways. I still have the original gas cap, wheel caps and Gremlin badging. It's wall art for my workshop.

No, it's either a bad lifter, OR it wasn't running long enough to pump the lifter up with oil. AMC 6 cylinders are notorious for lifters collapsing. Kind of surprising for an immaculately restored car.
@KC9UDX
@KC9UDX 6 жыл бұрын
With so few miles, I suspect (hope not though) that the cam and lifters did not break in properly, and one of the lifters has worn through. I if so, the rest will soon follow. This is what happens when you try to break in a flat tappet cam with modern oil.

No problem, I LOVE AMC and wish they were still in business. The Eagle is my favorite car of all times. The Venerable 258 is a SUPER and VERY Reliable engine best when AMC still made them. The AMC Spirit witch was the predecessor to the Gremlin used Pontiac's 'Iron Duke" 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine. The used Chrysler's 727 torque flight transmission witch was among the best in the industry at the time. I mention this car because (2 wheel drive version of AWSEOME Eagle SX4) is basically the United States Postal Service's LLV's. LLV stand for "long life vehicle" and is the very familiar white mail truck you see every day. The are still on the road after over 20 years. The use the "Iron Duke" engine and old, simple, and reliable torque flight 3 speed transmission witch had a lock up torque converter witch was invented by Saab. Anyway I could talk about cars forever. I guess some of the 258 inline sixes had bad oil flow to the valve line. It could just be ware but the lifters did sound really loud. I can;t remember everything but I think the engine in your Gremlin has solid lifters. You may just need to adjust the tappets. I would look into it though, the car looks so clean and awesome and the engine will sound so much better!

If you spend a little time searching, you can easily find lots of automotive "lists" on the web. One of my favorites is the the top 20 (sometimes 10) worst cars of all time. For reasons I can't understand, the AMC Gremlin always makes these lists.The reasons given (for making the list) are always the same: The Gremlin was very ugly, it was cheaply built, it was too small and (almost forgot) it was REALLY ugly. My guess is many of the folks making these lists are not really "car" people. The fact is the Gremlin was a remarkably successful vehicle and AMC made some serious cash selling these "ugly" little cars. While they sold for almost exactly the same price as a Pinto or Vega, the Gremlin was superior to both the Ford and Chevy. Gremlins were powered by very strong 7 main bearing six cylinder engines...Pintos and Vegas had tiny little fours. At 50,000 miles, the Vega's engine was worn out and the body was usually badly rusted. While Pintos didn't rust, enough of them exploded (when hit from behind) to get the attention of the Feds. The true measure of the three cars is this: there are still a good number of Gremlins around. Yes, they're usually pretty beat up, but they're still running. Honestly, when was the last time you saw a Pinto, never mind a Vega? Agreed, Gremlins are ugly...but that's part of their appeal. Last time I checked, VW's "Beetle" was ugly and one of the most beloved cars of all time. Gremlins will never be in the same league as VW Beetles, but any genuine car "nut" knows they were a well made and durable little car. And every Gremlin came with a priceless standard feature, tons of personality...something no other American made economy car (of that era) offered. I rest my case.

My '72 Hornet had the 258 and I didn't think of that as slow. What is the 0-60 time of the Gremlin with the 258?
