The muscle-leaning versions really looked great, although I am a sucker for the '68-'70 Charger's look. Sadly, no matter the make, the NASCAR look never caught on with muscle-car people; looking at old photos of NASCAR race cars, they all looked so menacing with the wide-wheel, wide tire, lowered stance look. The only cars that I can think of from that era that had true handling looks to them were the '69/'70 Boss 302 and the '68 Mustang in the movie "Bullitt."
@kingelvis7035

In many ways the '71-74 was just a better car - in that it had nearly the same hip room as a full size car - it was roomier than the '70 despite shorter wheelbase. Car and Driver had a road test of the '71 SE 440 where they essentially compared it to a modern art sculpture - that it was just self evident that it was a masterpiece.

You've gotta admit, despite visual aesthetic, the Mopar engineers were on point with things like the safer headrest, high mount seat latch, center mounted vent controls and solid state regulator, etc. The paddle style door handles have proven hard to open and dangerous when trying to pull them open in the event of an accident.The Mopar designers have always been the best IMO. Ford has always been a bit more clunky. A more fair styling comparison would be with the Torino GT Sportsroof. Much cooler looking IMO.

This car was designed specifically for NASCAR stock car racing. That Coke bottle shape, long nose, high trunk, and odd windows were made for a car which could exceed 200 mph on the straights in Talladega and Daytona. In those days stock cars raced on the track had to be cars which people could actually buy. Chrysler sold cars with the 426 hemi because to run it on the track, it had to be sold to the public. Believe it or not, these 1971 Chargers and their cousins the Roadrunners were much faster on the tracks than modern stock cars today. Nowadays there is no such thing as "stock car" racing in NASCAR. Try to get a 355 ci V8 rear wheel drive Impala, Camry, or Fusion. The only thing stock in a stock car today is the roof panel and rear window.

It's really interesting to read opinions in the comment section. Personal tastes and preferences do very quite a bit. At the end of the day, it's whatever you like and can afford. Though to me, it appears the Mopar engineers did a more thorough design job here. Nevertheless, I fail to see the logic and advantage of mounting taillights on a bumper structure that is suppose to take the brunt of a hit.

In 1979 I traded a '56 Lincoln Premiere for an almost mint '71 Charger 500 - red, factory pin striped, black vinyl roof, white bucket seat interior, 383-4V, 4 speed, A/C, hood pins, rally road wheels. Strong, reliable, attractive car. Looked just like the one on the back of the little Dodge performance brochure that came in magazines, newspapers or mail at the time. One day a guy broadsided into the back of me and totaled it. Still miss that car today.

1970 Mustang styling was exceptional, It's was styled to resemble a Ford GT40 LeMans racer. The 1971 Mustang was a styling disaster. A slab sided awkward looking hulk. I always liked the 71-74 Charger styling. It was a much improved car as well over the 68-70s. I had a 69. 1 felt that they are sitting towards the middle of the car, not on 1 side or the other. Also, rear visibility was terrible, much better on 71-74s, especially on SE models with the quarter window and different b pillar design. The 71 was much bigger inside, with more room all around, whereas my 69 felt cramped in back, much more closed in and certainly darker do to the buttress roof line. Even though the 71 is a hair longer overall, it had a shorter w/b than my 69, but was wider, doors were bigger too. Except for the windshield, the 71 had actually less glass area, yet more visibility, than the 68-70 cars did. It's odd that there was no mention at all about any of the performance models offered, for any of the 3 cars compared. What I always liked about this era of cars, is that 1 could order a car any way they wanted it. Now days, 1 is stuck with whatever the manufacturer decides to put on it, and 1 pays for it, just that way!

I've always appreciated the aesthetics of the Dodge and Plymouth bodies stylings from the 1960s into the mid-1970s, but I've always wondered about their durability, as for any particular model year back then, I'd see loads of Dodges and Plymouths, but five years down the road, those five year old models seemed to disappear from view . . . yet, there were plenty of five year old Fords and Chevys still seen on the roads. Possibly that fewer Plymouths and Dodges were made when compared to the production numbers with Ford and Chevy?

I love these videos. However, in my opinion they must have only been useful in one of two situations. 1. Someone who was simply shopping on class of car and did not care what emblem was on it. 2. A conflicted husband and wife where one wants the Charger and the other wants the Torino or the Malibu. It's funny how advantages perceived or otherwise are cherry picked to make these or in some cases how a disadvantage is somehow spun into an advantage. I'm sure Ford and GM had similar comparisons for their dealers.

Our car has bigger bumpers and more headlights! So it’s better! Mopar had one hell of a way of marketing cars! They’re all pretty much the same, just came down to personal taste. Didn’t care for having to hold the button in to lock the door on Ford’s and I didn’t like the placement of the seat release on Mopars. I grew up with Chevy’s, so that’s probably why I like GM characteristics over the others. But I can say with complete confidence that the Chevelle is way better looking than that Charger. Didn’t like any of them after the ‘69. One more thing, as for having “different” models for two and four door variants; it was a money thing with GM. Generally, forward of the A-pillar the cars were identical. Saved on castings and whatnot. But did the coupe suffer from having to share a body style? Hardly. The two doors were designed with style in mind. Then, they reconfigured the back two thirds of the car to turn it into a four door. If anything, the four door cars had to conform.

I'd definitely take the Charger over the Garbage Motors product, but not over the Ford Torino....

I wonder why they didn't tout the 440 SixPak or Hemi in this training film? Low demand obviously. '68-'70 are the pretty Chargers to me; not this Pontiac front end lookin' thing. Also, I wish Daimler heard the bit about the Chevelle's "compromised 4-door body style" since all they did was use the name Charger to attract sales even though it's a big 4-door sedan that should've been called Polara (!).

The styling change wasn't arbitrary, aerodynamics had to be improved for racing.

The 440 and 426 hemi were not available in the base charger. This video only talks about the charger Torino 500 and the Malibu.

Started to loose the plot a bit when comparing door handles and size of interior door arm rests. I was for the Malibu until the far more relevant info near the end. Just remember Car and Track got 8mpg from a '71 440!
