Lou we share the some love for this car. I borrowed my future father in laws 69 to take my now wife to the H.S. prom. Spent all day cleaning it top to bottom. When it came time to buy my first car it was a 71 dark Turquois with dark turquoise interior. I was 19. Had it for 27 years drove my sister away from her wedding in it. 'asked my wife to marry me in it. I have since owned 8 more marks as daily drivers. Loved my two MK 8s but my 71n Still my favorite car of all.I found your video while looking for a clean but not astronomical $ 70-71.On my bucket list now. Best of luck great story.

Nice story, Lou. In 1981 I bought a previously owned 1971 Lincoln Mark III (from a local Lincoln dealer after a long search) that was in near excellent condition . The exterior was a pewter color, black vinyl top, with black interior. The car drove and rode like a dream. The 460 engine powered the car nicely. However, I had read the intake valves and head ports were huge, which hurt low-end velocity so I installed a recommended Edelbrock aluminum performance manifold which would give the engine more flow velocity at lower RPMs. It did, as I could note a marked difference in throttle response and pick up. Holding the accelerator down all the way the car would chirp the tires at the 1-2 shift. I also read that when Lincoln developed the grill (a multi-piece all diecast metal and chrome) back in 1968, it cost $350. That translates to more than $2,600 in 2021. The Lincoln Mark III was getting near the end of the line in terms of quality body and interior materials (i.e., stainless steel trim, die cast and chromed items, real wood veneer, stainless steel wheel covers, etc.). I happened to disassemble one of my wheel covers and it comprised 7 separate stainless steel pieces -- not some one-piece stamped aluminum cover like you find in many cars after that time. I forgot to add, what inspired me to buy my 1971 Lincoln Mark III was a co worker of mine that bought a beautiful green mist 1969 Mark III from the original owner. I had to drive my buddy from Maryland up to Pennsylvania to buy it. I followed him on the way home and watched how elegant and graceful and beautiful that car was going down the highway. It was then I knew I needed to own a 1969-'71 Mark III.

This was the car I wanted so much when I was young. I didn’t know cars when I was in grade school, I just knew what I liked. I walked home for lunch everyday from school, on my walk, Monday through Friday, a black Lincoln Mark III would pass by me. I fell in love with the car. After months of eyeing it, and it’s distinctive spare tire bulge in the truck, I announced to my mother I knew what car I wanted when I grew up. She was curious, asking me what it was. I didn’t know, so she gave me paper and a pencil and asked me to draw it. I kept telling her it was funny looking in the back. When I finished, she started smiling and told me that was the car my grandfather drove. My grandparents were divorced, so I rarely saw grandpa, only when we visited his beautiful apartment, not far from Ford Headquarters in Dearborn MI. The next time we visited him, she made sure to say how much I liked Lincoln’s, and asked if he would show me his car. We went to the garage and he showed me everything, including how the trunk opened. Several months later, he called and asked if my dad and I would like to be his guest at a Tiger game in the box he had tickets for. Of course we accepted. The night came where we were going downtown, but my grandfather stopped by so I could ride to the game with him in his beautiful Lincoln. My poor dad drove separately in his 68 Monterey. On our way to Tiger Stadium, I was in heaven. Grandpa allowed me to play with every button, switch, knob and gizmo in his car............ except the trunk release button which was in the glove box. I had the power seat going every direction. Since my grandpa was a Ford exec., he was given a new Ford lease every year. That was the only time I rode in that car. The year he retired, he was driving a beautiful dark green on green, fully loaded Ford Thunderbird. It was a gorgeous car, but could never measure up to the Lincoln. I’ll always remember that beautiful brown Mark III, and the special one time ride with him. Whenever I see one of these beauties on the road, which isn’t too often, I always think of him.

Heck, I came to your channel strictly for all the muscle cars. BUT...Mr. Garcia is such a classy gentleman, and the reaction you showed of him during the pocket-knife backstory is tremendous. Great story, car and video. One correction though.... the sensor mounted on the cowl is not called twilight sentinel. First thing is that was a term GM used to market the headlamp delay feature. At Dusk headlights and taillights would turn ON, off at dawn and the headlights could be adjusted to remain on for a period of a second to several minutes AFTER the engine was shut off. Again this was a Cadillac/GM trademark and feature. What your seeing on the Mark IIIs cowl is the Automatic High beam dimmer sensor. This enables the high beams to DIM when a car is approaching and then returns to high beam providing the car is driven on a road dark enough that would require high beam function. Continental did have a similar automatic sentinel type headlight system like Cadillac, but it was simply called "AUTOLAMP" option. It was not available until 1972 in the Mark IVs and other Continentals though. So the Mark IIIs had Auto highbeam OPTION, but no automatic headlamp/tail lamp option. Lights had to be turned on MANUALLY at night and OFF when you shut the car down.

Hi Jake Real, Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
@thomasshort1784

@jake real That's right, Twilight Sentinel was Cadillac's automatic headlight timer option (introduced for it's 1964 models) that was designed to light your way up to your house door after shutting the engine off at night. Lincoln wouldn't offer an equivalent option until it's 1974 models came along and it's Automatic Headlamp Dimmer option was revised for '74 as the Headlamp Convenience Group which included both the headlamp dimmer and the new timer with on/off delay system (again, the latter being similar to Cadillac's Twilight Sentinel). God only knows why Lincoln waited 10 years, considering it was trying to turn up the heat on Cadillac back then!

In February of 1973, my dad bought a new Mercury Cougar Convertible. It came with a 351ci. “Cleveland” V8 engine. Unfortunately, that model year saw the introduction of the “EGR valve anti-pollution control” on it. As a result, the engine would “hesitate” during the warm-up stage. By May of that year Dad was tired of the car, and was looking for a used Lincoln in good condition. A local TV personality in Winnipeg was selling his wife’s 1971 Lincoln Mark III. It had a chocolate brown exterior, with a matching leather interior, and a black vinyl roof. It was fully-equipped with most options. When Dad test drove it, I rode along in the back seat. The ride was smooth, but I thought the engine was a bit too loud. The seller was asking $7,500 for it. Dad offered $7,000, but was turned down. Excitedly, I urged Dad to offer $200 more for it, but he refused. He told me at the time that he believed in “even numbers!” Two days later Dad called the seller back, but by then the car was sold. The selling price?...$7,200!!! A lousy $200 stood between me and a Lincoln! I got my driver’s license that year. Can you imagine what a “chick magnet” that car would’ve been? Dad eventually sold the Cougar to my older brother, and I eventually got an AMC Matador 2-door hardtop as my first car.

The early 1970s was the end of an era when Lincoln, Cadillac, and Imperial dominated luxury car sales in the U.S. The legendary Mercedes S-Class W116 debuted in 1972 and its sales only grew in that decade. The late 1960s to early 1970s was when Lincoln's quality and image reached its peak. Lincoln sales increased over time but the wealthy were buying more European cars, too. Anti-German sentiment left over from WWII was long gone by the 1970s and some buyers wanted a different kind of luxury sedan. In 1965 Lee Iacocca told his designers to put a Rolls-Royce grill and a Continental spare wheel bulge on a Thunderbird...the Mark III was the result. Henry Ford II was desperate to outdo Cadillac so build quality was first rate...later Marks were not as well built. In both 1971 and 1972 Lincoln used the slogan "The Final Step Up" in their marketing...the magazine ads showing both the standard Continental and Mark III were superb. The grill on the Mark III cost $200 each in tooling costs (about $1500 today after inflation), which was very expensive for the time. Production of the 1971 Mark III was 27,091. This example has the Hi-Back seats which began the model year as standard equipment. However, some buyers wanted the lower profile Lo-Back seats which were added later as a no cost option. Automatic temperature control and Sure-Track Brake System were standard, both considered advanced engineering at that time. A 460 V-8 with 365 HP and 500 lbs torque ran on premium gasoline.

I'm in the UK so I never saw these cars when I was a child. However I remember the detective series "Cannon" and he had one I think. To add to the drama Frank Cannon would frequently take his Lincoln off road in car chases and I remember watching it wallow around like a boat. That is an amazing story with the Swiss knife, more incredible than an episode of "Cannon".
