I've been a Chief's fan since 1966 and while I love the current team, this is the bunch that will always have my heart! Canton, Ohio and the HoF is full of them! Lenny Dawson, Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, Buck Buchanan, Curly Culp, Johnny Robinson, Emmett Thomas, Jan Stenerud, and Coach Stram have received their recognition, and if there is to ever be any any justice, #89 Otis Taylor will soon join his teammates!!

Unfortunately Lenny Dawson's last year is when I became a fan I think it was 75. I remember bill Kenny and I thought he was pretty good. Blackledge never played hardly as I recall but seems like that was the mid eighties. I remember never making the playoffs but a couple of times in the 80s. Joe dehlaney was a big big loss. Demon cherry got 4 picks 1 game in the late eighties thar was a big moment.the defensive teams of the 90s was great just no qb to take us to the promise land. Montana was too old and broken to get us there. After he got knocked out of the afc championship game against Buffalo he was finished. Close but no cigar. If Gannon would have played against Denver in the 14-10 playoff loss instead of grebak that was our year! The end of the great defense that year. This is a great time to be a chiefs fan for sure glad I lived to see it. Just wished dad was here to share this.

I am LOVING your content from the 70's! I was eight when this game was played. I stayed up with my dad to watch the first half of MNF in those days even though mom wanted me in bed by nine. I AGREE with the first two comments, I was a KC CHIEFS fan as far back as 1970. However, my ALL TIME FAVORITE game, even though it was in a losing cause, KC vs Miami. I was a young 13 yr old and it was the first round of the playoffs, Saturday, Christmas day 1971. From start to finish BOTH teams were very COMPETITIVE, there were NO dull moments, KC'S Ed Podolack put on a show setting an NFL record for a running back, yards rushing, passes caught and punt returns etc..The game would go into two OT'S and Miami would come away with a victory. That was a long game and I ENJOYED every bit of it. Looking back on those early years of MNF, I loved the theme music used by ABC and the cast, Howard Cosell, Don Meredith, and Frank Gifford, they were a class act !...RIP. Let's not forget the commercials, they were entertaining as well....those were the GOOD TIMES of my youth. In closing, 1971 was the last time the Chiefs were a competitive winning team making the playoffs etc.. until 2019/2020, Super Bowl Champs !!

Yes, this was a preseason game, played at Municipal Stadium. If it was a regular season game you would've seen the Wolfpack seats where the left field area was. It was Frank Gifford's first game on Monday Night Football. It was a typical hot late-summer night in Kansas City with the temps in the 90's during the day. Oh the memories. Long Live the AFL!!!

Not sure if you ever witnessed Monday Night Football from the first season (1970), but Keith Jackson was the play-by-play guy. They moved him back to college football after that season and that's where he made his name & fame. Gifford had to be a little nervous, knowing he was replacing a "legend."

In addition to there not being the temporary stands in the left field area, the skin part of the baseball infield was part of the football field. This game was probably played before the Royals home season was completed. During the regular football season the infield was normally sodded with grass. I was a resident of Kansas City at this time.

@@thomaswolf723 Hi Thomas. For sure, the Royals home season hadn't ended on this night. And the Chiefs used to begin their season on the road for at least the 1st 2-games. In this season, they started the 1971 season in San Diego, went to Denver the next weekend and then to Houston in week 3, Their home opener was against San Diego on October 10th, so George Toma and his crew had about a week to install the sod on the infield and get it ready for Chiefs games.

the area in KC where Municipal Stadium stood is now a housing development--the city has erected a small park on the site with signposts of the players and teams that used to play there (KC Chiefs NFL/KC Athletics MLB etc)

I watch this video from time to time in order to remember and take in how enjoyable that era of Kansas City Chiefs football was for me. As I hear the broadcasters in their pregame preamble, I attentively listen to the introductions in the background, and each time I listen, I get a sense of warmth and even pride that I am still a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Hearing the names Ed Budde, Jim Tyrer, Len Dawson and Otis Taylor announced, I feel like I'm there. It's easy for me to vividly remember the wonderful days of the American Football League of the 1960's, the transition into the NFL through the merger of 1970, (I wanted the AFL to NOT merge with the NFL, but instead, grow and compete with them) and then the 1971 season that was so exciting for all of us Chiefs fans but ended so disappointingly on Christmas Day in the double OT loss to the Dolphins 27-24. Just hearing the Public Address Announcer's voice takes me right back to Municipal Stadium and the unforgettable days of my youth at Chiefs games. I thank God above for being gifted such a wonderful experience in my life and if I'm fortunate enough to welcomed into Heaven, it's my hope that the good Lord will let me go back and re-live some of those days again. LONG LIVE THE AFL!!!

I believe this pre-season game was played on Aug 30, 1971. The actual season did not start till Sept 19th that year. The Jets would up a disappointing 6-8, and the Chiefs season would infamously end with the longest game in NFL history against the Miami Dolphins in 27-24 loss. Miami would lose the Super Bowl to Dallas 24-3 that year. However, 12 months later the Dolphins would open their historical 1972 season at the brand new Arrowhead Stadium.

This had to be pre-season. At that time, the Chiefs shared Municipal Stadium with the Kansas City Royals. The infield dirt is still there. Whenever a football team had to share a stadium with a baseball team, the home team usually waited until baseball season was over, then they'd set up their "permanent" football configuration. In this case, the Chiefs had temporary seating set up in left field. It isn't there, so this had to be August.

That was normal back then. In those days, players were not with their teams year-round as many actually worked off-season jobs as the money was NOT EVEN CLOSE to what it is now, even adjusted for inflation. They used the pre-season to actually play themselves into shape. MUCH different now with the level of off-season programs and so forth.

Kunty Kunto I grew up in Lawrence, Kansas (Born in ‘68) & Riggins was around all the time. My friend’s stepdad played ball with him at KU & he took us to an alumni game one time (probably around ‘80 or ‘81). We got to hang around on the sidelines & Riggins was drunk off his ass, with a big pile of beer cans next to him. He picked my little brother up by the head & started shaking him, saying, “Are you gonna play the 2nd half? Are you gonna play the 2nd half??” He was totally bombed🤣🤣 It was crazy. I also went to high school with Chargers QB, John Hadl’s, son & Danny Manning took our high school to the state championship in ‘85. A few years later he was winning a National Championship with Kansas as a part of Danny & the Miracles. One more famous Lawrence High alumnus was Erin Brockovich. I never met her though🤣

Keith Jackson was the play-by-play man in the inaugural 1970 season. This might have been Gifford's first broadcast with the MNF crew and it shows because he's making mistakes right and left. Thus the beginning of Cosell's sarcastic ribbing of "Faultless Frank".

This was a preseason game. It was obvious by the fact there was still daylight at the very beginning of the telecast. Namath's injury against the Lions occurred on August 7, 1971. The Jets in those days I believe played ALL of their preseason games on the road because the Mets woul not let them use Shea Stadium out of concerns the grass field would be torn up (grass fields were relative to today very poorly maintained back then).

during that time you either loved Mr. Cosell or you hated him-many people would watch the game on TV but turn off the audio and get the play by play from Westwood 1's broadcast of the game (I believe Jack Buck announced the games then)

I wish someone would post any and all (I think there were three) of the ABC pre-season telecasts from 1974, with Fred Williamson a part of the broadcast crew, replacing Don Meredith, who had jumped to NBC. Howard Cosell, in his then-current book "Like it Is," devoted a whole chapter to the prospect of Williamson joining the crew, predicting, "the kid is going to make it." The prediction proved to be incorrect, as Williamson was so bad that he was let go prior to the first regular season MNF game, and was replaced by Alex Karras for the next three years. Of course, Howard made no mention of his incorrect prediction when he briefly criticized the hiring of Williamson in his book "I Never Played the Game" (1985).

Thanks for the upload. Love these games. I was lucky to grow up during the 60's and 70's. I watched the Chiefs practice at William Jewel College. Hate the new NFL. Stopped watching completely when they started saying Brady was the best ever. He could never last a complete game in this era.

The Chiefs groundskeeper at Municipal Stadium-George Toma (The "God of Sod")--would normally have painted the helmet logos of the Chiefs on one side of the 50 yd line and the visiting team on the other side (on this occasion the Jets)--I'm not sure why he didn't on this occassion
