Jerry Ferko Jerry you are so right. I’m 56 and grew up in the 70s and loved the NFL. Most of all this show. I looked forward to it every weekend even as young as age 8. I know times change, but it’s hard to watch today’s NFL. Too much QB protection, stupid penalties, idiots hotdogging on almost every play, are just a sample. I miss muddy fields.

Nowadays, it's become clownish in its pre-game shows, too many women in sports journalism has feminized football culture, every highlight or player & coach profile has hip-hop background "music," the uniforms don't seem as creative (or are sometimes too creative), the announcers' voices and grammar aren't as good, and player off-field behavior has taken a dive.

Many of us old timers don't realize the power of images from our youth and how they affect our opinions. You have to wonder, if we grew up with the current Broncos logo throughout our entire boyhood, and then recently it got switched to the old bronco inside of the big D, would we like the one from our childhood better?

An interesting look back. In this episode I saw guys who I remember playing but hadn't thought about in years. 1973 was the last year in which the goal posts were on the goal line, for the 1974 season they were moved to the end line where they have been ever since. Also in 1974 overtime was adopted and 1973 was the last season in which a game would end as a tie at the end of regulation. The two most historical games from week 2 of 1973 were: 1)The game in Oakland where the Raiders handed the Dolphins their first loss since the 1972 Super Bowl after th e1971 season, having gone undefeated in 1972 and 2) the last NFL regular season game played at Yankee Stadium which ended as a tie between the Eagles and Giants. The Giants then played the rest of their 1973 home games at the Yale Bowl at Yale University in New Haven, CT.

Compare what they are doing today, with what Billy Whiteshoes used to do on the Oilers back in the day. Why do we hate what they are doing today, but enjoyed the Billy Whiteshoes gig? I think the coaching staffs are supporting it because they think that it inspires confidence and makes them play harder and better, which is their ultimate goal. I can't take it either, but this "confidence" factor is hard to argue against. Of course, when both teams are doing it on offense and defense, they cancel each other out.

Never accuse Al Davis of missing a financial opportunity. Undefeated world champs from Miami coming to town - move the game to a nearby college stadium with 20000 more seats/tickets to sell than the smaller Oakland coliseum. Imagine today’s pros being told to use the same primitive dressing rooms as the college kids? The dolphin winning streak would end that afternoon - but Miami would throttle the raiders in AFC champ game in the orange bowl a few months later.

San Diego and Houston had incredible uniforms. Giants had a bad year but were in most of their games in '73. This was the year the Falcons won seven straight and beat the Vikes on Monday Night Football. Saints were a bad team. Broncos had their first winning season.

The last game played at Yankee Stadium Sept 23 1973 Giants-Eagles 23-23 tie. Also Miami 18 game winning streak ended losing to Oakland 12-7. A historical day in the NFL that day.

Particularly interesting in 1973 was how some teams were loaded with talent, but flopped. Chargers would win two games though they had Coy Bacon, "The Deacon," and Rossovich on that defense - and John Unitas, who early in the year, was throwing well. The 49ers had that Super O-line, Vic Washington - a speedster at halfback, Brodie, and a slew of great defensive players, especially at linebacker, yet slumped to 5-9. Cardinals had some tough defensive dudes, but gave up 20 points a game and went 4-9-1. That would change and compliment that unreal offense in the next year. First year for Falcons in white cleats. Liked the Skins' uniforms, but the spear and arrow helmets were better. Denver and the Chargers togged out in classics. And, tough year for the Browns because the Steelers would own them from herein.

Pretty much every team will have talent here and there. The difference is for that time the great teams, Miami, Minnesota, Oakland, Dallas etc. knew best how to put everything together. It also speaks of the great coaching that each of those teams had. You think the Steelers dominance of the Browns in that era was something. During the whole decade of the 1970's Miami would beat Buffalo in every game. Happy 100 seasons
