Yup. My brother's Demon smoked everyone at his High School Drags. It was all about weight to horse power. The amazing part was, he and a couple of buddies simply tossed headers, a mild cam, aluminum intake, rear end gears and a larger carb, all in done one weekend, when my parents were gone on a three day trip. I almost crapped my 9 year old pants, during a hell ride he gave me. The car absolutely pegged my body back in the seat! The cars were underrated, just like built up 302 Mavericks, during this time. Everybody wanted a Camaro, Mustang, Cuda, or Buick GS.

Amazing story Chuck! I would have loved to have been around in those times! I just turned 20 but I love everything about the muscle car era! I'm glad you had fun, and you are absolutely right on small blocks being underrated! 👍

Hi, Lou! This car was built for only two years as the Demon, but it continued for another four years with a different name, Dart Sport. This was after Dodge took a lot of flack for the Demon name, largely from Christian groups. AC/DC can take one on the Highway to Hell if they want, but personally I don't think I would want a car with that name, either. As for that sunroof, I can think of a couple of other cars from this period that offered a folding sunroof similar to the one on Edward's car. One was the AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon, and the Buick Skylark Sun Coupe. Also, the early Nash Rambler convertibles had a similar kind of top that rolled over the window rails. Thanks, Lou and Edward for this rare presentation.

I knew a guy that had a ‘71 orange Demon with the slant-6. He bought and affixed a factory decal kit with the 340 stickers for the rear quarter panels. It had the steel rally wheels, but they were narrow, and it had the dinky little tailpipe hanging out the back. It was amusing as hell when driving down the highway and some guy would roar up to have a go, only to realize it was a six!!

What a beautiful, beautiful car. I bought my 72 Demon new, with a 318 and a four speed from the dealer. I never had any idea there was a sunroof option. However what intrigues me is the small Pentastar badge behind the right front wheel; typical Chrysler adornment for all their vehicles. Mine didn’t have one, and what I seem to remember is that those were discontinued for the 1972 model year. A friend of mine got one and mounted it for me as a surprise, which I thought made my vehicle really special…though not as special as Edward’s Sizzler Package. What a beauty.

Dear Lou, I always enjoy your car stories very much, they always cheer me up after a days work.My hobby is to collect car sales brochures from american cars of the 60,s 70,s and 80,s. Very often you show the viewers car brochures wich i also have in my already vast collection wich makes me thankful qnd proud. I am living in the Netherlands in the town of Arnhem. We rarely see USA cars here in the netherland, and if we do they are mostly heavy customized wich i really detest. This video is another splendid example of a factory stock car with real timcapsule qualities. Again very big thanks Lou for showing us these wonderful cars and increasing our knowledge of USA cars. God bless you and your loved ones, and god bless America. Remember there is no substitution for quibik inches, nothing is stronger than Detroit steel , the best thunder comes from an vee eight, they do not build cars with Detroit pride any more. Best wisches and greetings to all USA car lovers on you tube. Henry Hendriks from Arnhem Holland.

BOY! What great memories. I special ordered a 72 Demon 340 from Vietnam. Mine was gold leaf metallic with black vinyl roof and fresh air hood. One mistake on this beautiful car is that they painted the hood shiny black. The hoods were all painted flat black from the factory. Bone stock, I turned 14.4 @ 100 mph and could outrun GTO's and Chevelle's and 383 road runners.
@neighborscomplaint6859
@neighborscomplaint6859 2 жыл бұрын
The "Sizzler" graphics package was not paint. The side and hood stripes were matte black vinyl and the snorkel hood-scoop was molded in matte black color. I also owned a gold leaf, black vinyl top, black graphics '72 4-speed back in the mid-'70's with manual steering and brakes and no A/C. It was the stiffest riding, heaviest steering car I ever owned and drove like a truck. The first time I drove it off the lot it ran like a 318 two barrel and I thought "Wow these are really smogged down motors, what a pig". I didn't know the ThermoQuad had a cold motor secondary lockout emissions control. A few miles down the road and at operating temp I hit it coming off a red light and it lit the tires so hard I nearly spun it around. I was grinning from ear to ear and immediately forgot about how hard it steered and rode. I had Mr. Norm's dyno tune the timing curve and carb and I installed a V-gate shifter and traction bars. It spanked a lot of cars on the street that it shouldn't have been able to beat on paper, including one 454 Corvette that was really surprised and accused me of hiding a 440 under the hood.
@davidhechler5882
@davidhechler5882 2 жыл бұрын
@@neighborscomplaint6859 Your right about the flat black hood treatment. When I got to Vietnam for my second tour I went to the BX and got with the Chrysler sales guy to order my Demon. I really wanted a 440+6 road runner but I could not afford the insurance. Mine was ordered with bucket seats and console with automatic and 3:55 gears. I wanted it in green go or plum crazy but the HIP colors were not available in 72. I know what you mean about manual steering and brakes. My Brother had a 67 GTX and it was like driving a truck. I ordered mine with power steering and brakes. Imagine this: I had about 800 bucks in options and I paid 2970 bucks for it. That would not buy the wheels and tires these days. Most guys that have Demons today put a 440 or even a Hemi in them.

Everytime I see a 340 Duster, or Demon it brings back the first time I went over 100MPH and I was scared as my friend Bob thinking he was a race car driver weaving in and out of traffic. I said I few Hail Marys afterwards. The start of a mopar engine is noticable without looking at the cars. ANd Lou, The first time I seen a Brand New 72 Ford LTD Coupe in Gold with a Black top at the new car dealership I was in love with that car. Of course we got the Country Sedan Wagon.

I knew that was coming when he said the sunroof was sourced from the same place as VW. When I was a kid we had a very old beetle, I think it was a '56, with the same fabric sunroof. Us kids loved that car and one day we got the sad news that somebody made a left turn into traffic and hit dad on his way home from work, dad was OK but the car was totaled. Later we got a new '68 beetle and the sunroof by that model year was no longer fabric, it was a metal panel painted same as the car and it operated with a crank. It's interesting that VW abandoned the fabric sunroof while Chrysler was still using them years later.

Now this is something else!! I once saw a Demon with a sunroof just on a picture and now finally "live" in this video. I think that most people don't even know, that back in the day this was an option. Luckily enough I own a '72 Demon 340 too, but without the sunroof obviously. Mine's bright red which is my favorite color of them all, so I am extremely grateful to have that. I don't have the "Go Fast" wing as I prefer it without it, but I got all the correct stripes, the twinscoop hood snorkel, a bench seat and a three on the floor shifter as us Euros enjoy to shift those gears, haha. Being born in the early '80s behind the Iron Curtain meant, that the only pony, muscle cars and american cars in general I saw were the ones in american movies on pirated VHS tapes... But here I am 3+ decades later with my own piece of classic american car industry. I feel like I love these cars since I was an embryo :D You got these Ferraris, Lambos, Alfas, Maseratis and lets not forget about Porsches, Jags, Astons and Lotuses, which are pretty damn cool, but I still enjoy the old american cars the most anyway. They just have a soul :) I never even saw another Demon on the road here in Europe, but what I saw is all the attention my car brings. Other drivers and pedestrians wave at me and give me thumbs up and want to take pictures of my Demon, when I stop with it somewhere. This brings happiness not only to me personally, but also to all the people I meet on the road, because seeing a super rare car like this among all the econoboxes here in Europe is just amazing. I bet Edward gets even more attention, because of the sunroof. You just don't see that unless you're lucky to drive on the same road as the few people that have a Demon with it. Classic American V8 - I wouldn't have it any other way. There's no school like OLDSCHOOL. You all know what I mean...before I even open the garage door, I get weak in the knees, I get goosebumps and my pulse gets quicker...not many Demons 340 were built and I have one. It used to be a little boy's silly dream and now I have it at home. I am so lucky!! Go Demon 👹 go!! Thank you Lou for the video and also thanks to Edward for showing up with the sunroof Demon, this is just too epic to see on a video!! Keep on cruisin' guys and girls, this Demon right here in the video and all other classic american rides are simply irreplaceable. I turn my Demon key with the ZZ Top keychain in the ignition...*GLUG, GLUG, GLUG, GLUG, GLUG, VROOOOOOOOM* P.S.: I apologize for the grammar, but what I wanted to say is this - The old american classics mean the world to me ❤️

@@loucostabile Hello, sure I am subscribed, because it's worth it. May I have a question? Is there a chance you'd interview someone with an old truck like a Kenworth, MACK, Peterbilt? These things were built to haul things, but they look really fantastic anyway. I believe one or two truck videos would be enjoyed by most, if not all of your viewers.

Goodday Lou, What a great little devilish Demon. How rare with the fold up sunroof perfect for summer day cruising. Perfect center console, left & right hand mirror, rear spoiler, LSD. Did these Demon's come with a factory tacho option. Great little pocket rocket. Your number 1 Fan in Australia Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤

Back in 1978 a friend of mine had a yellow ‘72 Demon 340 4 speed. On a trip from California to Colorado he averaged 25 miles per gallon, which I found impressive for a muscle car back then. My 6 cylinder automatic ‘66 Mustang only got 27 mpg and it was pretty under powered.

There were three versions of the 340 engine in 1972. There was a high compression version, that went into all 1972 340 export cars and made it into some domestic cars. There was a low compression version with a forged steel crankshaft and a low compression version with a cast iron crankshaft that was externally balanced late in the model year.

Those was the last lightweight Dart, before they started bolting on those heavy bumpers. Having anything else but a 340 in it would unDemon these cars. I wonder as to why Dodge even offered those other two smaller engines. Those were the best sunroofs. I had something similar in my Renault 5 (LeCar). It was factory-installed. Meaning that it was a unit with its own frame of which was spot-welded onto the roof. The frame was necessary for keeping the unibody stiffened
