I had a pinto wagon. In 2015 -2016. Drove it 11,000 miles in one year. Very pleasant car to drive.

Out of necessity (new baby) back in the day I bought a brand new `74 Pinto Squire Wagon. Bit of an odd combination: The "big" 2.3L engine, manual transmission, medium brown (the 70s, remember) with the Squire fake woodgrain, chrome wheel trim rings and dog dish center caps with raised white letter tires. The thing wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding and only dousing of the plug wires with silicone spray would get it started after sitting in the rain, but strangely enough I got more compliments on the looks of that car than almost anything else I've ever owned. Go figure.

I have a 1972 Pinto Squire wagon I have owned for 35 years. It has required a few repairs during that time, including a new engine, but it is so simple and easy to work on it's not a big deal. It's an AZ car, and has zero rust. The body is still rock solid after 52 years. It's also very practical. I have hauled almost everything in it. It is Ginger Brown with a brown vinyl interior. I've had the drivers seat redone a couple of times. It still has its original 5 slotted 13" Appliance aluminum wheels which were an optional upgrade in '72. I still have the original A70-13 Goodyear PolyGlas Gt spare tire that came with the car. The paint has some patina, which I like. I do plan on replacing the badly faded woodgrain vinyl though. It has the SOHC 2.0L/4 speed, and cruises on the highway all day at 75 with no problems. I have taken many cross country trips in it.

An uncle , GM employee , asked me for advice about his Vega’s extremely high oil consumption. My suggestion - a Pinto wagon. It solved the problem.

Unbelievable number of places I drove my 72 Pinto to and home again. Not fancy but a very solid car. I even had Firestone 500 tires on it. Funny because Johnny Carson made a joke saying America had a new secret weapon: A 72 Pinto on Firestone 500s.... Some out there might remember why the punchline was funny.

The Pinto got a bad rap. If you bust off that one stray piece of metal with a rubber mallet (yes, it should have been done at the factory!), you have a good and dependable car. Their engines were used up into the '90s. If I could go back in time, I would buy one today!
