1975 Ford Elite & Torino Ads
The Ford Torino is an automobile that was produced by Ford for the North American market between 1968 and 1976. It was a competitor in the intermediate market segment. The car was named after the city of Turin (Torino, in Italian), considered "the Italian Detroit". The Torino was initially an upscale variation of the intermediate sized Ford Fairlane. After 1968, the Fairlane name was retained for the base models with lower levels of trim than those models which wore the Torino name. During this time, the Torino was considered a subseries to the Fairlane. By 1970 Torino had become the primary name for Ford's intermediate, and the Fairlane was now a subseries of the Torino. In 1971 the Fairlane name was dropped altogether, and all Ford intermediates were called Torino. This name was one of several originally proposed for the Mustang while in development.[1] The Torino was essentially a twin to the Mercury Montego line.
The Ford Elite is a personal luxury car produced by Ford and marketed in North American from February 1974 to 1976, with the name Gran Torino Elite used in the first year. Based on the Torino, the mid-size two-door coupe was intended to be a less expensive Thunderbird alternative to compete with the increasingly popular intermediate personal luxury class of vehicles such as the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Buick Regal, Dodge Charger and Chrysler Cordoba. It was essentially the concurrent Mercury Cougar XR-7 with a mild front end restyling to resemble the Thunderbird, different taillamps with a center reflector, unique twin opera windows and large color-keyed vinyl moldings placed higher on the bodysides. The interiors were identical save for upholstery styles and minor trim. {TAKEN FROM WIKI}

My father bought a 1975 Mercury Montego wagon brand new. Canary yellow with the Villager package (woodgrain), 400, C6, flight bench seat, Cross Country suspension, and tow package. Car is long gone but I somehow acquired all the paperwork my dad kept on that car and I still have it including the warranty card. Price equipped $6787. Price bought with no trade $5300. Canadian Ford products weren't smogged up and could burn leaded fuel at the time. Unleaded was a little harder to find and quite a bit more expensive. Sold it in 1987 for $2000, still looking and running like a brand new car and 160k miles. Lost a lot of hubcaps but dad scooped a set of styled steel wheels from the wrecker and cured that problem. A lot of great memories of that car and I used to see it from time to time on the road until the late 90s. It took us EVERYWHERE including a trip up the whole Alaska highway in 1978.

Bought my 1973 Gran Torino March 13, 1973, Ford Military Sales B6 annex, Subic Naval Station , P.I. It had the 302 V8, powered disc brakes, power steering, tinted glass all around and AM radio. It came in at $3,470.75. Picked it up at Skyway Ford in LA. It was light green with dark green "butt burners", (vinyl seats).

Most of the Torinos I've come across are all cheap stripped down models with standard features. No power options, no split bench seat, no arm rest, vinyl interior and an AM radio. Just PS/PB/AT/AC and a 351.

Chevrolets still kicked Ford's Ass back then and now, especially the Impala, Monte Carlo, Camaro, Chevelle Malibu, and Corvette! I had a 1976 Monte Carlo Landau Sport Coupe and It looked and performed like a Million Bucks when compared to these Fords! I still own Chevrolets which are far superior to Fords today! 😍

The Elite had the Cougar’s front and rear fenders, a completely different front facia with a protruding grille, turn signals mounted in the front fender blades that wrapped around the fender sides, single headlights, and twin opera windows on each side. The Torino had flared rear fenders, completely different front fenders, a much flatter grille, quad headlights, and turn signals mounted behind the grille slats.

@@merc-ni7hy Right, but that was extremely common practice at that time, and still common today. Why would any automaker spend a ton of money building a midsize coupe that was completely different than the line of midsize cars they were already selling? Of course the Elite would be based on the Torino, Montego, and Cougar XR-7. Just like the Monte Carlo was based on the Chevelle/LeMans/Grand Prix/Cutlass/Century/Regal, and the Cordoba was based on the Coronet/Charger/Fury. But Ford did give the Elite different body panels than the Torino, which set it apart for buyers who were walking into Ford dealers looking for a midsize personal luxury coupe at the time.

its pretty sad when a vehicle commercial has very little to say about a car other than pointing out the capacity of its fuel tank.generally that means its a gas hog, that needs a big tank to give it an average range of travel between fuel ups.
@SpockvsMcCoy
@SpockvsMcCoy 2 жыл бұрын
People living in rural areas or going on long distance trips appreciated a large fuel tank. That size fuel tank was typical for a full-size car but not so for a midsize car like the Torino or Elite.

U.S. cars of that era were a joke, they. Were designed for the earlier massive V8s with massive front ends and were so disproportionately ugly and un cool. I remember opening the giant hood of a friends cutlass and hardly seeing the little peanut of a motor behind a fan shroud that was huge, but I guess they were better than the everyone 4 door family sedans of today that kids try to make look like performance raceing cars.
