I had this same year and model, for my first car, in 1985. I was 16. The oil pump malfunctioned once on a trip from Amarillo to Austin . Left me, at 16, stranded out near Coleman , TX. But I got it fixed in Coleman . It had over 100K miles when I got it in ‘85. It was 10 years old and felt ancient , compared to other cars from ‘85. I guess lots had changed between ‘75 and ‘85. I remember that “20R” on the engine head. Man I miss that car. I just do not see them anymore, ever

I have watched your channel now for years and just saw this today> Not sure how I missed it. Anyway, this is one of the cars that really started the change in the auto industry. The American manufacturers simply could not compete with this. The quality and responsiveness and even the dealer experience were way beyond what any American manufacturer offered. I love American cars, but this is really something special.

Toyota's answer to the Mustang and the Camaro back in the mid 70's to mid 80's. The engine was nearly indestructible - the body and chassis would give out before the engine would . Incredible car. Arguably one of Toyota's best.

Quite impressive. The first new car I ever bought was a '75 Celica GT in a copper metallic color with white interior. At the time, demand in my area was so high I had to get on a waiting list for 2 months to get one. As I recall, the walk-away price was $5,150, tax included. I should have bought two and stored one! Thanks for keeping this one alive so long.

What a beautiful car!!! What memories it brings back. I got mine (exactly the same as Rich's) during my senior year of college - late '74 or early '75. The price was 4020.00 plus tax and tags. I LOVED that car. Moved to Cleveland to attend Med School and the car was rusted away by the time I graduated. I wound up putting almost 120,000 miles on it though. The five speed transmission on that car was the best. They really were a bear to steer at low speed. Fat 185-13 HR radials with tubes didn't help. Haven't seen one on the road in many years.

Very nice car. I bought a 1975 Celica ST in 1988 with 86,000 miles. Put a couple hundred thousand miles on it, then upgraded to a 1990 Celica GTS. Should've never sold that car. Years later, I bought a 1974 ST and did a ground up restoration on it. Took 2 parts cars to build it! 😁

20R engine (shown here) must be pretty reliable engine as well as 18RC or 8RC engines. However, since 18RC engine is made from cast iron head and block and 20R has aluminum head, could blow head gasket more often if not careful. This is because I drive1974 Celica GT, even to this date with over 300,000 miles and as far as I can tell, the head gasket never gave up yet. That's how reliable some Toyota engines are back then with cast iron engines.

HI Patrick Murphy, Thank you for sharing your first hand knowledge, Lou
@Mrjohnnymoo15 жыл бұрын
It's a catch .22. Cast iron heads are more likely to crack with getting hot and cold, aluminum heads are more likely to warp if they get over heated.

I had a 74 Celica GT that looked pretty much like this one, mine was silver and didn't have those Federal rubber bumpers. Great car but it rode like a hay wagon and the fat tires/manual steering was hard to park in tight places! Mine also had oil pressure and ammeter gauges, that they replaced with idiot lights in 1975.

I bought one of these brand new on 22 Sep. 1975. Drove it almost seven years. I wonder about his claim of only 28k miles. My engine components looked better and his look like it's had more than the claimed miles. Also the tires look much too good to be as old as claimed. Brake pedal wear seems more than 29k too.

Being a Toyota owner of 1983-SR5 4x4 truck, 1984-Corolla LE, 1984-Celica GTS, 1986-Supra Turbo, 1992-Camry XLE, 1996-Camry LE, 2007-5.7 liter Tundra, 2017-4.6 liter Tundra. Knowing Toyota vehicle the 1975 Celica Rich has is truly a treasure but looking at the wear on the interior and the amount of deterioration of labels, paint, hoses and general looks of engine compartment and when started the Cecila, wow the poor little 20R's valve train sounded so wore out. Rich shows 29,067 miles but looking at the numbers you can see that the 2 and 9 both numbers are off of center column meaning the 2 and 9 have been rolled back. The Celica has at least 90,000 to 115,000 miles on it, I have family member who are fraud investigators for decades looking at this car they pointed out much more than we could write on this comment section. So buyers beware!

My (late) cousin Kirby bot on new, same year prolly, and he let me drive it, and even supplyed a cute blonde off the ski bus. anyhow, I had never driven a stick, so that was interesting, and takeing and exit off the thruway, the engine suddenly revved up... broken timing chain, and it couldn't have been more that a couple years old. my cousins was white, I think they all had black interiors

Lou Costabile hi Lou, I was at the Mel Martin Auto Museum on Black Canyon Hwy in Phoenix yesterday, and the had a little note paper with a link to a Ytube video you may have made there. they had mis-spelled your name, substituting an "I" for the "a". I brought it to Mel's son's attention, he was sitting behind the '58 Chevy desk. I video'd the desk and him, it's at CORVAIRWILD.

It’s a pity that USA laws require those ugly bumpers - the other question for the owner would be how does an 18R engine find its way into a GT? Elsewhere GT models came with DOHC 2TG and 18RG motors some with the much sort after Yamaha cylinder heads
