To oldschooldrumcorps: Yes this was "76 Lancers, I was the "big" Bass Drummer. Our theme that year was "The Wiz" I was only 16 yrs old at the time... but the most memerable times of my youth. Still to this day [at 52 yrs.] I still get misty eyed when I hear Danny Boy.

They were awesome. '76 was my first year in SCV. We had a great "friendly" rivalry with 27. In fact when they came out to our show, Pacific Procession, we housed them at our homes. Great corps, great people and great times!

The same year, we had them here for Drum Corps West in Salem hosted by the Argonauts. They also did the other shows out here, Seattle, Boise DCI West. It was nice to have them. 😉

One of the finest Old School Corps. Funny how Jr. DRUM & Bugle Corps started as feeders for Senior Corps but quickly eclipsed them in visual/musical quality and design. Hard to get adults to commit to those demanding spring practice and summer tour schedules.

I remember learning that high step marching. It took practice, but once you get it, you own it. I can still march like that without bouncing. I can remember teaching my Navy boot camp company how to march, and thanks to drum corps, I really knew how! Modern drum corps show return to that style of marching; it does so much for GE and M&M.

One of my favorite corps. I saw this show in Boise, ID in 1976 when I marched with a corps when I lived out west. Awesome color guard. I miss the precision flag and rifle work done to accent the music rather than the dancing, spinning and flipping in the air that is done so much now (not to take anything away from today's corps they are still great). Danny Boy gives me chills everytime I watch it. Thanks for posting this. Brings back great memories.

Micheal L. YOU obviously did not march in a corps that was in this caliber back in YOUR DAY. These kids NEVER EVER, judged or spoke ill of the corps they would beat....AND they came up with much of the program with the guidance of an instructor. YOU did that when you marched...DID YOU ? And they placed with the BEST in the country....SO what you think is hilarious is YOU looking at yourself wanting what you will never have. Do double time with a rifle and lay on the ground and stand up in UUNISEN ...THAT my friend. we do NOT see on the field today. LOOK at the timing. Anyway, stop talking about what you dislike and get with it.

The one thing which most people don't realize is that ANYONE could join the Corps, regardless of "talent." The ages ranged from 13 to 21, the "veterans" would teach and mentor the newbies and it was a total year-round family. It didn't cost an absolute fortune to audition and join and there wasn't the heartache of not being welcomed into the Corps by not "making the cut." Also, the members of the Corps all lived in the same communities, which added an even greater sense of belonging and family. I'm not hating on the current-day Corps structures, but there is something to be said about having your neighbors joining you for M&M practice in the basement during the winter, working on your marching carriage and your step length, as well as all those great weekends in the local school gym with the Corps as you practiced (for hours!) the Company Fronts, Intervals and smoothness in movement, all the while enjoying being with YOUR Corps.

I miss the days of 70s and 80s DCI, when you could tap your toe to the beat during the performance and hum the tunes on your way out of the stadium. Listening to current day corps with music modulations every .5 seconds, and feeling dizzy after watching a show is insufferable.... don’t even get me started on drummers wearing sleeveless chiffon and dance slippers. RIP DCI.

The color guard moves are hilarious? You are not knowledgeable. The moves of this guard are so precise with the show they marched. It entertained the crowd AND was a crisp performance. The shows of today aren't created to entertain the crowd, they are designed to feed the over inflated egos of the so called judges who issue points. Those young people were heaving air by the time their performance ended. The work and lung power was intense. This show excites me as much today as it did when I saw it in Columbia, SC back in 1976 I realize that the format has changed significantly since the 70's, but I'll tell you that the excitement factor is not as intense as it once was. I have no intentions to disrespect the kids that are in DCI these days, but please don't tell me that the shows(and corps) of today are superior to the ones of the earlier days. Formats may change, but entertainment, sound, and precision are ever flowing. At least they should be.

While colorguard work is more demanding these days, 2-7 rifle spins rival if not better than today's guards (eg- Love BD 2017 but the old school rifle spins at the beginning are nowhere as clean as these).

this year 76 the lancers did something revolutionary. although the hornline did not execute well their sound was unique. wedge decided to go with all french horns instead of a mellophones french horn mix. it is a wide open DARK alto voice. the French horn is sorely missed in this activity. the all mello line is to bright it is not deep enough. maybe someday somebody will reintroduce it.

Earl, they have, only they are real Orchestral French horns, vice the G-bugle versions, that were really hard to keep in tune. DCI also allows Trombones, cornets, Tubas, concert baritones, and other assorted brass, which gives today's brass composer/arranger a wide variety of instrumentation to write for, as well as the corps having a wide choice of music they can actually play now.

One person playing one french horn on the sidelines micded up is not what i consider french horns. A complete integration within the hornline is what i mean. This particuliar vid of 27 marched 8 french horns. A french horn line is what i mean.

The guy that marched them in 75 built the cage in his garage. I think it's the same player here in 76. By the end f the decade, Ludwig had put out a portable chime rack with back support and padded frame.

Say what you want, but 2-7 was instrumental in setting some high standards. Sure DCI has evolved, but if you think that corps of today have not evolved in such a way that they took nothing from corps like this ?? There are tons of instructors out there today who marched 2-7.

old school drum corps . I have not heard orchestral French horns in today's activity. please show me where. they are all mellophones. as far as intonation. give me good players and you will have good intonation. as far s control for marching just develop a mouthpiece with a French horn cup and a trumpet rim. control problem solved. I await the day when arrangers bring back this beautiful and dark sounding instrument.
