The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.

Gave Jackie Stewart a chance of driving a stock car, the STP Dodge of all cars. But Richard Petty was a real sport for letting him do this segment.

Jackie did an awesome job driving a stock car, especially with the fact that he had retired from racing about 2 years prior and the fact he won his titles in Formula 1/open-wheel racing.

He was definitely surprised by how unstable stock cars still were in the mid 1970s, that's what he meant when he said the car was "short". He was probably expecting a fairly comfortable GT-esque having watched them for a few years and discovered the grip really wasn't there.

@39:09 I really enjoy watching these and hearing how the narratives have changed over the decades. 1976: The NASCAR championship is described as "meaning a lot in terms of money and prestige". There was limited coverage of the NASCAR championship in November, with the points often being decided before the final race (Cale clinched 1976 at Atlanta with a race at Ontario still remaining). Compare that to the modern era with all the manufacturered hype around "The Chase". There are 4, garunteed, titled contenders, hours of pre-race coverage, live race points tracking and the confetti blown trophy presentation. I always look back to when the NASCAR Truck Series "upstaged" the Cup Series on championship weekend at Homestead in 2003.

If I was your digital marketing manager, I would show the video features that broadcasters did (e.g. Jackie Stewart driving Richard Petty's car in Atlanta 1976) so you can get more viewers.

Jackie Stewart actually did try a stock car once before this. He DNQ'd at Charlotte in the fall of 1967 in a Cotton Owens Dodge.

Back in the 1960s into the '70s, ABC-TV Wide World of Sports generally televised the Spring Atlanta race, but I cannot recall a single time they televised the Atlanta Fall race. Memory serves me that the Southern 500 at Darlington, then the National 500 at Charlotte, sums up the Fall schedule that ABC-TV had for NASCAR from the 1960s into the '70s.

@@bloqk16doggone shame theres no footage of Hyltons Talledega win. Or Ponds win. but what you say is true. Do you have the old wwos USAC indy car races at places like Tenton? ooooh for a Mike Mosely win lol. THANK YOU BIGTIME for everything you have done

@@MrChristopherHaas I wouldn't expect NASCAR to promote classic USAC from this era. However, I can't understand why Penske Entertainment has not. I've seen footage of classic Trenton in the Janet Guthrie Documentary that aired back in 2016.IMS has released HQ versions of some classic Indianapolis 500s. There are hundreds of classic USAC races in the vault dating back to the 1960's. Trenton, Phoenix, Milwaukee,Texas World Speedway, Hoosier 100, Langhorne, Indy 500 Time Trials...the list is huge. NHRA has their own classic race channel on ROKU. I can only assume money is extremely tight at IndyCar and the cost of getting these out of the ABC/Disney vault and uploaded is not in the budget at Penske Entertainment. I also imagine the switch from ABC/Disney to NBC/Universal has NOT helped that situation.

@@HODIUSDUDE good grief. I,as a simple fan, made an attempt at contacting ABC 😂 to see if anyone out there was holding out on those old broadcasts. Im just a 61 year old man who wants to see Mike Mosley win Trenton in 71’ one more time, still remember McCay selling it for the bigtime upset it was. So youre telling me that, basically, Roger Penske is holding up that vault? Cant make money…or present HE and HIS histories in a timeframe where i can watch THOSE races with my now 8 year old little buddy like we do with what YOU THANKFULLY provide..by letting em sit. I dont get it but then i havent understood what the man was thinking for over 40 years now

Big mistake when they reconfigured Atlanta.
@mattkowal907 ай бұрын
Well, if they didn't run the superspeedway package, and instead the downforce package, then it would be interesting to see how a race for the win would pan out. Some guys running up top, some on the bottom and staying in the gas.
@DanArnets14925 ай бұрын
I get why they did it BUT it was a huge mistake specially with so many similar tri-ovals and quad-ovals happening back then. They should've kept themselves different even if they wanted to reconfigure the turns a bit.
@Bguitarney4 ай бұрын
Yes sir. Oh be get now with old configuration lol with the performance and car they got now but lot of good that does us. So here we go another Daytona right after Daytona. Ridiculous I live in ga and what they’ve done with the track over the years since ticket sales declined is terrible. No food vendors, no petty grand stand, the one in turn 3-4, that was an awesome place to watch race at atl from. And gave the track it’s confines and made it much nicer. Yes they screwed up with Atlanta a great racers race track

Lol. Jackie Stewart my thoughts exactly! Dang we could use some more of that now or anytime. I remember years ago, 2015-2017? F1 raced at the Red Bull ring and Charles Leclerc, once again had the lead was on pole fastest lap, well he turns it over to Hamilton and Verstappen. In the cool down room after the race Jackie come up and brushed Charles’s hair, and said no wonder u didn’t win your not sweating enough! Lol Charles still has this problem. Jackie told him all them years back and I’ll nvr forget that cuase that’s exactly why he lets Verstappen take the lead from him every single time he out qualified Red Bull and probably had the superior car and still won’t drv all out.
