@@brucemorton7787 yes so true. If the Smythe family ran the team in the 70's instead of that clown Ballard maybe I say maybe the Leafs do end up winning a Cup. ? At least so many great players would not have been traded away for next to nothing , sadly.

As I was watching this (Donnie and Dahli think that Garlands goal against Edmonton was similar to Sittlers) it CAME TO ME, hey, in both the '72 and '76 series the winning goals were scored by Toronto Maple Leafs, the Leafs that you loved or at least liked... My favorites, David Keon, Doug Favell, Jacques Plante, Tim Horton, Darryl Sittler, Tiger Williams...

I would argue that this 1976 Team Canada was as at least as good as the 1987 team. Lafleur, Hull, Orr, Esposito, Serge Savard, Sittler, Lanny McDonald, Denis Potvin, Lapointe, Perreault, Dionne, Clarke, Robinson, Gainey… holy moly!!

I just know this team was clearly better than the one that faced the Soviets in '72. The Canada Cup team was absolutely stacked with hall-of-famers. This tournament was proof that the Hockey Canada made a mistake in prohibiting Bobby Hull from playing on the '72 team. Hull played a number of exhibition games against the Soviets when he played in the WHA, and he was as much a nightmare to Soviet netminders as Henderson was.

Although the best Russian players were missing from this Tourney, their Top Core Mikhailov,Petrov,Kharlamov, and the other did play these Czechs in the 1976 and 1977 World Championships and still lost against them. The only time the Soviet Union beat the Czechs in 1976 and 1977 in any Medal Round Match was in the 1976 Winter Olympics. This was about the best Czech National Team put together ever along with their 1998 Olympic Gold Medal winning Team.

The Czeck goalie came too far out trying to cut down the angle. Sittler was a goal scorer. He knew exactly what to do. And The Great Bobby Orr was named the MVP of this Series. Orr was well past his prime due to numerous knee injuries but Bobby Orr was better with one leg than most with 2. The guy was magical. he could and would kill a 2 minute penalty by himself. Bobby would rag the puck and dance around others with grace and ease. You really have to see what he could do. That Canada Cup Team had 18 Hall Of Famers on it. Im a Bruins fan but I love the game of Hockey everywhere. I did not realize that Dennis Potvin was the greatest at his craft in those days. I definitely have to google Potvin. I believe he played for Chicago. The Canada Cup was better than The Stanley Cup in those days

+d2d4e6 The commentator (Ken Dryden) is referring to two disallowed goals by Canada. The first one was scored in the net which the Czechoslovakian player had just knocked off its posts deliberately (he got a penalty for this). The second was scored right at the 10 minute mark in the 1st OT period, which was being treated in this Tournament like the third period in international hockey, so the goal didn't count, as play stopped at the 10 min. mark to change sides.

As far as overall superstars, this was the greatest team, in my opinion...absolutely loaded with superstars. The 87 team, of course had that handful of great players.....with the Edmonton dynasty happening....but this team had so many great players from many teams. Boston was just coming down from it's stanley cup period and Montreal was winning cups every year. Toronto was also on the upswing.....and then there is Bobby Hull, of course and the players who had gone to the WHA. It was a great era in hockey. Perreault was also in his prime here, with Buffalo having a few real stars.

Yup, it capped a magnificent comeback that, sadly, was also the swan song of his all-too-brief career. The knee flared up again because of his MVP accomplishments in the series. After a couple of rehab-stunted seasons in Chicago, the greatest defenseman of all time called it a career after only a single brilliant decade. The '76 Canada Cup was truly the final display of the pure hockey brilliance that was Bobby Orr.

It is a team effort - every player counts towards the same purpose. Whenever Orr started an deep offensive, his partner defense man (Lapointe, Savard, ...) would back him up, to prevent a break-away from the other team. Often also, when Orr would be in front of the opponents net, his wing or center would cover his position. That is how the team works. Hull was one of the most powerful player and had the fastest slapshot (at the time). His team mates would clear the area (open the space) so he could unleash the shots he was so famous for. Hockey is a great sport, enjoy! Ciao, L

+d2d4e6 Actually, Canada and Czechoslovakia played to a 3-3 tie in 1972, in Czechoslovakia, just after Canada's gruelling 8 game series against the Soviets. See kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJfGg3uihayBqqM. Also, you're incorrect about 2 disallowed goals for Czechoslovakia in Game 2. The 2 disallowed goals were for CANADA. I gave the details in a comment above from 5 years ago. Canada certainly did lose 1-0 in the Preliminary Round, in what (I think) was one of the best games ever played. In Game 1 of the Finals the score was Canada 6, Czechoslovakia 0. And this game, of course, ended up 5-4.
