Another old work truck that has been Frankensteined and hodge podged together out of parts from like 15 different vehicles. Runs great!

Im in the process of restoring a 1980 gmc 350 small block sm465. It runs and shifts as smooth as yours looks like it does. Good job on shifting young man you have the revs and speed down pat to allow for smooth gear shifting.

I miss my dads truck like this. When trucks were trucks and the working man was able to afford them, all you got now are rich fake cowboys making 200,000 a year as a engineer who are buying these trucks now for 100,000.

Well I always drove a pickup truck because I needed them for work, didn't do it to be cool didn't do it to make a statement I just needed a truck, now I'm almost embarrassed to drive one because all the fucking idiots that want to try to be cool, go buy a fucking Prius you bunch of shit heads leave the truck to the working man and quit driving the prices up so we can't fucking well afford it

I converted my 3 on the tree to a four speed called a three ring Saginaw. Now I actuate reverse with a cable.

I've been threatening to do that with one of those early 80s NP440 overdrive 4 speeds but they are hard to find.

Fair warning tha saginaw transmissions are not very durable. The saginaw was put behind chevy v6 and inline 6 motors, its easy to blow them up with a 300hp v8.

@@CrazyWoody1989 no problem I will be running basically the same truck making a Frankenstein of sorts I have a 1985 Chevy c30 chassis cab frame and I'll be taking the bed and cab off my 86 c10 to put on that frame and will have a Chevy 350 w the sm465 I believe the rear end is 4:56 gears cause the chassis used to have a dump body on it ... So I'm sure I'll be wanting to swap the gears to something like 4:10 eventually to make it more highway friendly lol
@CrazyWoody1989 Жыл бұрын
@@justinsmith847 For sure! Unless you're running big tires you might even go higher than that unless you plan on towing with it a lot. Mine has 4.10s in it and it's just about right with 285/75s but definitely isnt doing 85 down the interstate lol. When this video was shot it had a huge set of 36 inch old style buckshots on the rear and even with them it was no problem to take off in 2nd gear
@justinsmith847 Жыл бұрын
@@CrazyWoody1989 nice yeah that is what I figured I mean It will tow eventually but I don't think I'll really need the 4:56 gears ...
@CrazyWoody1989 Жыл бұрын
@@justinsmith847 Yeah 4.56s are for when you wanna haul like 10 tons lol. I pretty well knew I'd mostly only ever be using mine to tow a car trailer and I regularly use it to haul my Gambler 500 van around and it does just fine with the current setup.

How hard is that thing to shift in traffic it's been awhile since I've driven a manual and I'm looking at a square with an sm465 in it and what gear do you Start off in 1st or second?
@CrazyWoody1989 Жыл бұрын
It's not too bad to shift, and I almost always take off in second gear unless I'm pulling a trailer.

Nice thing about the transmissions with a low first is that you can idle along in slow moving traffic!

How do you start off on second with minimum slippage? I have an 86 f150, 1st is very low for climbing. Any tips?
@CrazyWoody1989 Жыл бұрын
2nd gear in the sm465 is about the same as 1st in a regular 4 or 5 speed so it's no problem at all to take off. Really 1st is only good if the truck is loaded down, pulling a trailer or if I wanna crawl around real slow. I'm not all that familiar with how those old fords are geared but I'd say it's very similar. If it doesn't like taking off in 2nd it may just be becauae it has pretty high rearend gears. In which case you would just have to deal with the aggravation of taking off in granny low all the time unfortunately.

@CrazyWoody19897 ай бұрын
Yeah it drives and rides pretty nice! It's kinda harsh over bigger bumps and pot holes just because of the stiff springs but even that isn't terrible. It rides real nice with a load of wood on it or a loaded trailer hooked up 😂
