I was a 19-year-old sophomore at Michigan at the time. What a day! OSU actually dominated the game statistically (e.g 20-10 in first downs) but just didn't make the plays in the red zone and had too many turnovers. In the years 1975-81 inclusive, this was the only game won by the home team. OSU won in Ann Arbor in '75, '79, and '81. Michigan won at Columbus in '76, '78, and '80.

82 to 85 home team won every time.Watching football as a kid in 70s and early 80s this rivalry contributed to me wondering what the big deal was about home field advantage.

I grew up in the 70’s and lived for this rivalry. Words can’t describe how huge of a rivalry it was. Watching Woody lose his mind was always a bonus. He created the biggest rivalry in all of sports with his bad temper.

Woody was a perfect storm. The guy lived his whole life in the state of Ohio and was born in the beginning years of the rivalry. He had witnessed Michigan dominate his beloved state for the first four decades of his life and had plenty of rage built up when he took the reigns at Ohio State. His hatred for Michigan did indeed make this the greatest rivalry in all American sports.

You know, after half a century, I can still feel the tension of this game. But, I have actually learned to appreciate Woody Hayes. Yep, his temper cost him his job eventually, but when he was in his younger days, and when he was not under huge pressure, he was really a great guy. I can see why Ohio State players wanted to play for him. But it sure set the rivalry in flames when he punched that cameraman.

The GREAT days at the Big House. Football back then seemed more pure; more about the game, the schools and rivalries. No big business, no BCS. Just a fall Saturday; and 3 hours of pure pleasure. Loved those UM unis- No Nike swoosh or Adidas stripes, or "special" jerseys. And by the look and sound of that crowd; no old alumni sitting on their hands and too disinterested to stand and cheer.

It's all about flashy trends and money these days. Recruits and current players love the ugly uniforms provided by Nike and Adidas. Fans actually buy them and that inspires more new ugly uniforms to be unveiled for particular games. I hate all of it. We have one of the most iconic uniforms in college football. If it's not broke, don't fix it. And while I agree the old alumni could be louder, I wish the students would actually get to the game on time and not at the start of the 2nd QR.

Thanks for posting this. As a Buckeyes fan i hope Michigan is on the up and up. If their 2013 recruiting class pans out then that might be the case. You can only expect Ohio State to do the same with Urban Meyer at the helm. Anyways, i enjoy watching older games such as this even though OSU lost.

Am I the only one who noticed at 8:45 Rick Leach may have touched his knee before getting in the end zone at what would turn out to be the game winning score? No doubt if it happened today, the play would have been reviewed. Did this reair include any replay angles?

Everybody remembers that; including even casual fans of SEC and PAC-12, anybody who has watched HBO doc on the rivalry, EVERYBODY who knows the name Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler. Whether you hate or love Buckeyes or just totally indifferent; the ignominious end of the 10 Year War; a loved/hated coach losing his shit completely is a story for the ages. No other school has that kind of story; but you better believe Alabama would love Bear Bryant even more if the Bear ended his career punching an opposing player. Hell either coach could have ended his career with a nervous breakdown; like taking a shit on the 50 yard line on National TV cause he's not leaving the sideline; and still be a God. That's just how it is; Joe Paterno isn't hated by Penn State for shielding a boy rapist for God's sake. Not even molesting boys; nah; straight ass rape. You tell anybody but Cops about that shit you're a totally fucked individual who should be universally reviled.

@@WalterWhiteFootballSharing said " you better believe Alabama would love Bear Bryant even more if the Bear ended his career punching an opposing player." Nah, as a Bama alum who went to games when the Bear was coaching, everybody would have been completely shocked if he'd done anything close to this. By the end, he had mellowed. He was always preaching, "Win with class." Google Bear Bryant quotes if you don't believe me. After winning his last game, he was asked what he planned to do in retirement. His answer? "Probably croak within a week." 4 weeks later he died of a heart attack. Bear Bryant did his fighting on the field. As a matter of fact, 6 weeks after this Michigan-Ohio State game, Alabama kicked Ohio State's ass 35-6 in the Sugar Bowl in Woody and the Bear's only meeting. The very next year, Woody wrote his epitaph by punching a Clemson player while the Bear won the first of back-to-back championships (his 5th and 6th). We couldn't love the Bear more because he was a winner right to the end: "I ain't nothing but a winner" is another quote you could look up.

@@robotunes And Bear Bryant would’ve went through ‘78 and ‘79 splitting Back to Back National Championships with USC had the Trojans not have tied Stanford during the season. The USC Trojans was ranked #1 overall before the 1979 Season and has also barely escaped Louisiana State’s Death Valley with a win before they began their conference play. Oh, if “Ifs and Buts” were candies and nuts.

Is there as full ABC broadcast of this game out there? I ask because on this Saturday there was a major event in the world that resulted in ABC breaking away from(or not showing the start of the game) and that was Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israel Prime Minister Menacham Begin meeting. This w as the 1 st time an Arab abd Isralei president had met so that it was why it was big news and it eventual led to the 1979 peace treaty.

And led directly to Sadat's assassination. I was like 4; that's what I REMEMBER; my introduction to World Events interrupting Teevee is horrifying shit. Reagan getting shot; surviving, and Sadat getting sprayed by soldiers during a military parade. The worst was Throughout the 80's as I watched Cartoons Saturday morning; NEWS FLASH; another US JET has been taken hostage; another American taken hostage in Lebanon, etc. Kept happening, kept getting updates interrupting bugs bunny; must have been a joke to smuggle guns on a plane. People who lived through it have the worst memories of the 80's; as if it's this Golden Age when America's Enemies cowered in fear... really? Cause kids with an IQ high enough to understand News Flashes were kinda scared. It was best to be dumb and change channel, Blah blah, body of hostage found, blah blah. As far as our enemies.... 250 marines dead in a single car bomb sound like fear? Our response? 'Redeploy offshore'. Yeah; that's some tough Reagan. Man if that happened in the 90's or the 2010's a stupid intervention that ended in a single bomb it would be impeachment proceedings.

I love Woody, but the tantrum with the sideline markers and then this punch to the camera man should have caused OSU to discipline him. But no, they let him continue and then the Clemson player incident happened. Never should have gotten that far if they would have given him some games off in the 1978 season.
