Learned to drive on my dad's 1978 - same color except we had an aluminum 'targa' band over the roof that connected the aluminum b-pillars. We drove the car hard for 248000 miles and sold it in still near perfect condition in 1984 for a next generation Supra. We had customized the paint to a 2-tone blue in its later years so the car stood out, and I saw it driving around the area nearly a decade later, but sadly on its last legs and no longer cared for, but a testament to the near indestructibility of the Toyotas of the day. Surprising given the harsh NH winters it was subjected to.

Toyota really made good cars back then, even before I was born (in 1984). Nice to see this 1978 5-Speed Toyota Celica is still in its original condition from when it was brand-new.

i had an 84 celica supra with the dohc 5mge I6 5spd i had it for 1 month had it painted new interior new seats and dash... sold her for 3,850 she had 382,xxx miles on her original motor and was a California car but all emission stuff yanked.. cat gone... and was sold to a guy in Florida were emissions are exempt. the car was very fast and even had a custom lsd thrown in the rear so both tires had no issue screaming. toyota made awesome rwd sports cars of the 80 's and 70s hands down.

I had one of those in the 90s in Russia. Different engine (1.6 l), two carburetors. 3 spokes steering wheel and alloy wheels. Funny it had the same issues with an interior like cracked dashboard top and panels on side of the back door were falling apart. Amazing car. I restored it with my brother and it was top notch little car. Light, nimble, manual gearbox was awesome. Well, that's why I'm here lol

@beb15273 жыл бұрын
The 1978 was the last year with the 125 mph speedo. 79’s had the dumb 85 mph speedo. 90 hp. Manual steering. I don’t know if they were all like that but our ‘78 was much easier to steer than the ‘79 was. Perhaps a different ratio. They both had freezing cold AC.

I had a '79 Celica GT, 20R engine, a good car, not that well preserved than this one, but it was my first car, I miss that car
@633jaime5 жыл бұрын
Had a 78 Lift back added Headers, wheels, sway bars, weber carb was a lot of fun till car was stolen. Handling was not BMW like but was stable up to the limit, steering left a lot to be desired and stock carb starved for fuel on hard corners.

This looks almost exactly like the '79 GT I had in high school. Pretty much the only difference was that mine had a sunroof. I beat the hell out of that thing, and it still gave me 110,000 miles before giving up the ghost for good. The only recurring problem I had was the clutch slave cylinders tended to give out. Also, there was a recall on the exhaust manifolds as they tended to crack (that's probably why the hose from the manifold to the air intake was removed).
@silversage1518 жыл бұрын
The one difference that I ever noticed between the 78 and 79 liftback was that the 78 had "Liftback" on the pillar and the 79 had "Celica" on the pillar.

Very nice!! In the years 1995-2003 I owned one like this with same color but with 18R-G engine which meant 2.0L twin cam with twin carburetor (approx 118HP). Unfortunately it was a rusty case. The guy who bought that from me was only interested in the engine :). (Norway)

Beautiful car--great price. Watch out--the interior upholstery (esp. blue) is light-vulnerable and crumbles under the sun. That car must have been in the dark for decades. If you don't cover it there's not going to be much left. Also, check the grommets in the door latches, little bean-sized rubber things that fall out and make the doors insecure; finally I think somebody spraypainted the dashboard panel--supposed to be fake chrome. Man I'd totally buy that car if I was in California!

Nathan, on the start of the test drive (before the camera overheated), the buzzer didn't go on. While you're driving down to the shaded area, the buzzer went on. Is that called a "seat belt buzzer"? Does that mean the buzzer will not go on if you start with your seat belt on?
