1979 Johnson 15hp Part 1 the Seahorse gets a water pump, starter spring, rope and handle - gear oil

In today's video we are working on a 1979 Johnson 15 hp seahorse. I'm not sure it will run but we will be testing it out and discovering its little problems one at a time.

I’ve got a 79 just like it! Bought it brand new in 79. It’s on my sears 12 foot game fisher hanging on my dock right now. Use it all the time to put around Phillips inlet here in pcb……..awesome engine!!!

I have the same motor and have just started messing around with it, but this vid would help me fix the water pump if that’s my issue. I have the same problem, not being able to throttle my motor up and it doesn’t idle well either and ends up dying out…gonna go find your part 2.

I really enjoy the information you give on these little motors these 1979 Johnson 15 horsepower I've got one I had to carburetor rebuilt the bottom end rebuilt everything's working fine I took it out the other day on the lake and it wouldn't catch up it was falling on her face just like you say and I started looking looks like to me I don't have no front adjustment it goes all the way up and stops so that could be the problem I don't know what it what would your opinion be

You got that right about that starter spring, it's like fighting a metal Cobra. My 1990 year model Johnson 15hp I bought used the starter assembly was like yours all apart. If you' ve never done one before it is for sure a learning experience.

The little black plastic piece should go behind the little ear on the recoil housing and there is also a little spring leg that goes with . Look at a exploded view of the whole assembly.

I need help. I was pulling the impeller off the drive shaft and the drive shaft pulled out of the gears. Now I can’t get it back in and engaging with the propeller shaft. What do I do????

I have a 74 Johnson 15hp which starts and idles fine. When crossing the lake with the speed it doesn’t take long for it to lose forward thrust and begin to rev really loud/high. Any idea on what I should be looking into?

You may have what they call a spun prop. If your prop has rubber between the spline hub and the prop your rubber could be slipping

Quick question. When I removed the lower unit, the driveshaft remained in the upper unit. Can you still install the water pump assembly correctly with this situation? If not, any tips to remove it without damaging it?

Some years the model number will include the year and on some years it doesn't. A quick google search will result in what you are looking for.

Hey I have approximately the same motor and replaced the pump today but it's still not pumping. I've cleaned the line but still nothing . I took thermostat out cleaned inside still nothing I'm totally baffled. Worked on it 5 hours taking it apart twice, still nothing. Water flows with muff on but not in a barrel. I'm losing my mind over this, any ideas?

you may be already doing this but make sure the water is over the cavitation plate in the barrel. are all the rubber seals around the copper at the pump side?

most mixture adjustments start at 1 1/2 turns from bottomed out.

Ordering parts now to update it with fresh expendables (Water pump, Thermostat & gasket, Fuel Pump, new Fuel hoses, Carb Kit, Spark Plugs, and lower unit oil.) They don't make motors like this anymore, and on a lightweight jon boat, they are a blast of fun!

That rubber tube that comes out of the impeller housing slides up around the metal tube coming down from the motor. That's where the cooling water is pumped up. When you slide the lower unit up in place, make sure it goes in to it.

I replaced my impeller and water pump on my 1980 15Hp Johnson and its back together, but forgot to put the that small piece of steel with holes in it that go's in the exhaust .. Do I really need it? what does it do?? Thanks Scott.
