Great highlights. Phil Ford with those spin-moves, 360's and circus shots all day.

Phil Ford and Otis Birdsong, a criminally underrated backcourt. Birdsong could score from anywhere (besides the FT line). Had incredible range and knew how to get himself open with or without the ball. Ford was an absolute warrior for a 70's PG. Mastered the drive and dish but also could dribble past or through any defense. Kansas City had no business being as good as they were from 78-80 but on any given night they could beat any team.

I've actually got an NBA spreadsheet with players from nearly every year added and I calculated a value based on a players ability to affect a game in all stat categories based on NBA average shooting models and I (a fairly big basketball fan) had never heard of this guy. But I had to check him out because my list has him as #114, by comparison Bill Bradley is #236. And Dennis Rodman is #204

I find it rather odd that a basketball fan has never heard of Phil Ford. He was perhaps the greatest point guard to ever play basketball at the University of North Carolina, the first freshman that Dean Smith, perhaps the greatest Xs and Os college coach to ever live, started. Phil is considered the quintessential Tar Heel maybe more beloved by Tar Heel fans than even the GOAT Michael Jordan. He would likely have won Carolina's first national championship in the 1977 title game against Marquette had the Tar Heels not been plagued with injuries to Tommy LaGarde their All American forward who had a broken leg, Walter Davis their other All American guard who had broken fingers and wearing a splint on his shooting hand. The four corners offense which Phil was so good at that they called it the "Ford Corners" led to the NCAA instituting the shot clock which only sped up the game which Dean Smith loved because UNC loved to run with the ball. Sadly Phil only played seven years in the NBA due to his on going problem with alcohol and retired. He is beloved in North Carolina. He was the MVP in his rookie year and led to the Tar Heels unseating NC State in the ACC tournament that year which had the incomparable and perhaps the greatest college basketball player of all time none other than David Thompson.

Could not agree more with everything you wrote. The battles with State made me love Phil. We love MJ, but to this day people LOVE Phil Ford.

Phil Ford's name meant something like "UNC Jesus" back in the day. Seems like a great fellow but I think substance abuse got a lot of those guys who came up in the 70s and early 80s. Walter Davis, David Thompson, Phil Ford. It's really too bad. Davis survived the longest.

@@MichaelSmith-or8kt Although I'm a Philly area Big 5 fan who went to the Univ of Pennsylvania, to this day, my favorite college PG is Phil Ford, and my favorite college player, period, is David Thompson. Both were incomparable for me.
@robertgordon15842 жыл бұрын
@@mattgoldberg4335 Agreed on both. Both largely forgotten. Thompson might be the best non center in college ever. Phil likely the best 4 year PG.

Phil Ford should have stuffed his uniform with pillows. Dude's career was shortened by a decade due to all the times he hit the floor on a drive.
