I had one these Moderne reissues back in the 80's. Very lightweight and great feeling guitar as I remember, wish I'd had hung on to it. Thanks for the memory jolt!

I remember those! Back in 1982, I was a teenager working in a music shop in Texas outside of Houston. We got all three Korina reissues, the V, Explorer and the Moderne. Everyone wanted the V, followed by the Explorer and the Moderne hung on the shelf a long time. Played all of them enough to figure out the V was a PITA, the Explorer was heavy, but the Moderne was the most reasonable of the bunch.

I remember that 1982 run of Korina Modernes, Flying Vs and Explorers. 1982 was an exciting year because the first of the Fender vintage reissues were hitting the streets, too. Up until then, It had been a long drought for both manufacturers, so the situation that year was very much welcomed. The Moderne used to be at the top of my all-time scoff list of fugly guitars but for a long time now I've really been a fan. Thanks to Mark and Norm (and Jen).

This Moderne reissue was sitting in the display window behind the counter of the shop where I took bass lessons, starting in 1982, through when I started taking lessons three years later and it was still there in the early 1990s before someone bought it.

Pretty guitar. Warm sound too. As always, nice playing and great lore about the guitar. It kind of looks like something you would find hidden away in Hemingway's house, although it is past that period of time. I bet that guitar would sound surprisingly good while recording in studio.

They also reissued these again in2012 in natural mahogany or black with the Gibson Futura split headstock,i,ve got one and they are superb,i paid 1000 uk pounds for it new which was cheaper than a Les Paul standard..definitely recommended.

A quick Google search turned up various photos of Billy Gibbons with a Moderne in concert, but his headstock only has the Gibson "G" for the logo

Al Coholic there is one black and white photo of him sitting with a bunch of guitars scattered around him. Its in the photo on the left side facing sideways. That is believed to be the moderne.

I collect 82 Modernes, 2 natural, 1 black and 1 white. Reading the comments people assume it will not stay in tune. Well properly maintained/setup as with any guitar I have no issues. For those who are priced out of the market I can vouch for the Epiphone Modernes as being every but a good as the expensive one. Just replace the pickups with burstbuckers. Same guitar, all korina along with a Gibson truss cover. My favs to play as I do not stress that am going to ding that korina.

there are alot of picyures of Billy gibson playing a futura and a moderne and the Noth have a single gibson "G" on the headstock. idk if that stands for a prototype or not. anybody who knows please tell me

You can buy the early 1980's Moderne's for $6-$8,000. The 2012 re-reissues are about $1,700 and up.

Uh, at 3:45, you say your amp tech (John Tucci) was at Rudy's (in NYC) buying an ES-345, and remembers seeing one: I've know Rudy for the last 40 years, and he opened in 1978, I believe (he's never seen an original, either...)!

Select both pickups... turn down the gain and overdrive and just a touch of reverb... these oddities actually produce a very unique jazz tone. A shame so many reviews never really demonstrate a guitar's clean tones first and jump right into festooning the sound with pedals and effects.

I think these were reissued in the late 90’s-2002 time frame maybe? Very expensive as i recall but I almost bought one, wish I had. Now epiphone has a reissue for $599 and Gibson for $1,999, the headstocks are different tho. The Joe B Flying V has some great reviews....i picked an expensive hobby to be poor! 🤔👍

I Remember That Guitar in Austin at Erlywine's Old Shop on Guadelope Street. about 1992, I had a B-25 Gibson that was a Hella Guitar. Later I bought a MK-53 Gibson for $500.00 in Austin, 1999. Erlywine kinda designed his Travel Guitar from the Moderne...Think about it. Don's a Good old Boy, hey, A NECK SWAP? Hell, look at Steve Vai's Weiro Strat in his Video with Frank Frank Zappa! He had all crazy Pickups and Switches... But I can SEE some guy wanting his Gibson Neck to LOOK like a Gibson's Neck! My Gibson MK-53 Headstock was Designed by Mark Kasha to give Straight String shot to Tuning Spools. People would say "That CAWENT be no Gibson, Boy!" Haw haw haw, OMG Those MK Guitars played like a Howard Roberts Custom....the Neck DEMANDED Jazz Playing! IT NEVER GOT OUT OF TUNE! I used 12-53 Brasswound Strings and even started to install Scruggs Tuners for my Fast Folkie Style of Cross Picking in the 2000's. I was not given over to FingerStyle with a Heavy Tortouise Fender pick instead og Thumb Picking...Because breaking my Thumb Nail twice a year every damn year since 1958 made me Abandon the Bob Segar Lessons I took and use a Flat Pick rounded off like a Felt Uke pick in the 1950's. It can Spin in your Hand and never be confusing, for Scratching along while making Scratchings with Left Hands. I play a 1989 KOREAN Epiphone Emperor 2, PRE Joe Pass model, with Three Pickups. I am 67 Years old and Think, Stink and Love the Guitar. Owned 2 of those Cuban Bajo Cureto 10 String guitarros, played them like Mississippi Fred McDowell crossed with Huddy Leadbeaters Rythems. MUSIC id the CURE for all that AILS THE HEART OF MAN. Lets shut down RAYETHON-MAC DONALD DOUGLAS and ETC make More Guitars. Less Neuron Moronic Atom Bombs! IMPRESS PEOPLE WORLD WIDE by SENDING GIBSON GUITARS instead of WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. Send OLD FARTS with those GUITARS to TEACH THE WORLD how CHET and them Nashville Cats DOES IT! JOHN SEBASTION.
