Had one of these and it was and still is awesome. Dude I was around in 82 and bought mine at Doc's H.D. Kirkwood, Mo. brand new. It was my 3rd bike and I was in my 30s. Still love the panheads & shovelheads.

Watching this video enraged me a little. Hahah just kidding. Here’s a few things wrong with your info 1. That’s not a choke it’s an enricher and should never be ridden with it on. It’s only for starting the bike. 2. Yes it is a shovel head like you first said not a panhead. 3. Hahaha It’s definitely NOT a rigid. 4. What you’re saying about the transmission is wrong. I️ think what you meant was when the fxr came out in the 1982 the big twin was the shovelhead. In 1984 1/2 Harley released the Evo. So you mean it’s rarer because the FXR was only a Shovelhead for 2 1/2 years but it had a 5 Speed from 82-94 5. Even the best bone stock shovel FXR is only worth about $6K to 10K max. An loaded FXRT or FXRP will sometimes bring those numbers

Why does harley put the word "choke" on it then....correct me if im wrong enrichers are on efi engines to get them upto operating temperature quicker. Kind of like how efi cars have closed and open loop to get the cold engine upto temp quicker

Errors in the video are funny to me, however you weren't even born. All is forgiven. I demoed one in 82 but the $6500 was too much. I had a 79 XLCH (kick only) bought brand new for half that price. However, I was totally impressed with the whole package and the Shovelhead. was fantastic. Nice video. FXR is one of the best handling Big Twins prior to the new Sorftails. :)

The fxr had the new racing frame and was the first dyna ( rubber mounted motor ) ,and the first 5 speed Harley I think pre cursor to police bikes or maybe both that year "all fx's have rear shocks the "R"designation means rubber mounted motor , basically a sportster with a big motor set up . Very cool and rare bike ! I've got the same year fxb sturgis twin belt drive .

My 1972 FLH starts way easy. I turn on the gas with the ignition off I pull the choke give the throttle two twist kick it twice turn on the ignition and it starts with the first kick .I have an electric starter but rarely use it. The bike is factory original equipment with a Bendix carburetor it was an old Tampa PD bike I bought in 89 and rebuilt. I have two Twin Cams I wish I had never bought they are not designed for an old garage mechanic like to work on me I should have tracked down a good Evo. Nice looking bike.

I have an 83 FXR Super Glide 5 speed HD in my garage right now it belongs to my barber. I am going over it it has a ton of issues. It is very factor outside of the S&S carburetor. It starts and will go in first and 3rd gear. but it is puking oil and sucking air at the manifold. I pressure washed the oil off to see what is what.

I'm a Harley owner, but also a car person and they did make some great cars in 1982. lincoln full size town cars with the 302 and your Chevrolet full size with the 305 were great cars! Plus your GM pickup line and Ford pickup line were great great vehicles with the 302 and 351 windsors in the Ford line. Also consider my 1998 dodge ram has the great 318 LA V8 which is 1960s material You cannot say that your full size or some medium sized cars in 82 were not good
@genxmurse7019
@genxmurse7019 7 жыл бұрын
By no means was I talking about the whole lineup. I loved the Hurst Olds, the all-metal F150s, Broncos, etc. Now, as far as those GM J-bodies & 267ci V8s, (just to name a few) are concerned...You've gotta be kidding, bro!
@EarlGuyton425
@EarlGuyton425 7 жыл бұрын
Right. Ive only owned and like full size cars and your full sized pickups, so when I think of 1982, I can see GOOD. But then in the 1960s some horrible junk was made. In 1961 ro 63 , olds and buick made this awfull 215 aluminum in some medium sized cars V8 and ford in some of the pickups up until 1966 used the horrible 292 V8 Yblock engine. But then the same years you get the 223 6 or 352 FE V8 in the same ford pickup if you looked before you purchased and those two engines were wonderful. Over all though in large car line and pickups the 80s decade had good quality

That is a nice bike, shovels need attention more so but excellent engines! Have you ever thought about what would happen to your legs if you go down wearing those shorty pants an socks? I ask because I once had a buddy who fell over sideways on his shovel and his intoxicated state rendered him unable to get bike off him. The pipes burnt through his jeans and boots , dam near lost his leg from infection. I always shake my head at guys riding in shorts and flip flops! Just sayin!

That threw me when they said 84, I was there in 80 81, I wish someone else could comment I'm not crazy I don't think, the brossure was really pushing the new evo engine that didn't leak, I've read what your saying saying but I had the brossure in 80, so I don't know. They aren't all that rare. The only reason to buy one over a later FXR is if its near mint condition and you intend to keep it that way for collectors. Otherwise, go for 1993 and later for the splined shaft transmission and MUCH better Denso starter which is still used by Harley today. The early brakes and 35mm forks well, suck. FXRs are huge fun. Every biker should try one.

The best starter on a Harley is that lever on the right hand side with the pedal on it. Very reliable.

They made shovelhead fxrs for 2 years. They are plenty rare. Not many left on the road 40 years later. Especially unmolested

Shovelhead s were made for the customer to work on with a pack of tools ( at least to get em home ) ,that's one thing so cool about em.

That's why you become your own Shovelhead mechanic. If you aren't a mechanic or determined to become one, Shovels are a highly questionable choice. I enjoy mine but I am a mechanic. The shovelhead.us site has an outstanding forum. The AMCA do too.

If it is an unmolested fxr then its not a riged frame.. fxr predecessor to the dyna its shovelhead not a panhead. Also if that is an s&s carb its not a choke its an enrichener and yournot suposed to ride with that on. And for S&S carb to work properly the bike needs aftermarket cam, ignition , lifters and open headers(straightpipes) that bike does not sound cammed out.. Not trying to be a smart ass just stating what i know. Still a cool bike.

FXR Harleys are truly lovely bikes. But the original buckhorn handlebars are not only uncool, but also uncomfortable and uninspiring. Whatever possessed Harley Davidson factory to released bikes with these silly handlebars ! It was extra expense for every FXR owner to replace them with much nicer handlebars.
