It's not like Honda started putting chrome fenders on their motorcycles in 1982 to copy Harley. In the early 1970's they almost all had chrome fenders at a time when none of their bikes looked anything at all like Harley. I think people just see another company use round wheels and they have a knee jerk reaction and say, "Look, Honda has round wheels just like Harley... they are obviously just a Harley wannabe". I'm not saying Honda wasn't influenced by Harley on many occasions. But in the 1980's Harley was obviously influenced by Japanese bikes too. My friend had a crazy Harley two stroke 125cc bike back then. It was terrible.

Even with a 750 4, they just don't perform, and border on Unsafe. The newer computer controlled models, the Goldwing, and N700A, they seem fine. Same with the CanAm offerings, as they also come with a push button manual mode. Me, I'll stick with a clutch, and a shifter, or two, in the case of mom's old CB900. The Honda CM450 Custom, along with the Suzuki GS450L, the Kawasaki KZ440LTD and the Yamaha XS400 Special, are some of my favorite bikes ever. They were stylish, easy to ride, affordable, and reliable. They made great commuters, solo touring bikes, and weekend cruisers. They had things like motorcy7cles should have, like centerstands and kickstarters. They were simple carbureted air cooled twins. All in all, it just doesn't get much better than that. The Yamaha Specials had my favorite handlebars. I put over 100,000 miles on Yamaha Specials in complete comfort with those bars, the comfortable stepped seats, and forward mounted pegs that let you sit upright in a natural position, not leaned over the bars with all your upper body weight supported by your arms and shoulders, your neck bent all the way back so you could see where you were going, and you feet on pegs mounted where the rear turn signals should be. These bikes were like a Barcalounger on wheels. A mini Goldwing. And did I mention they looked good?

Yey, I'm the winner! Love mine! Thought I was getting a CMX450 though when I traded. It is heavy though and you are tall in the saddle, which makes it rather dangerous for me to drive so... got to respect i. you're not picking it up on your own. Getting it on the cetner stand is a b1tch. The only thing I have yet to replace on mine after years and years is the tires and oil. I haven't even had to change the gel battery yet or the chain. The engine just purrs. I feel more confidence in the engine driving this anywhere than my Rebel. I drove it on an 800 mile road trip on the interstates without one hitch. That's all I want, rock solid reliability and a basic transportation bike. It's probably not as easy to work on as the Rebel, but it's not too much far behind I imagine. Wish mine had spoke wheels instead of those comstars. I wouldn't seek one out to buy, but if you luck into one, sure, take it. It's what every bike should be... bulletproof. You can't say that about much anything any more... so... yeah, don't malign it if it pulls that off. Very little else does anymore.

@@rslover65 Same with the Corollas - e.g. the 1.8 TS 2ZZ-GE is about as reliable as an 80s Alfa Romeo. Most are fine though ;)

just got rid of my CB450SC which was this without the stupid handlebars, and with a 6th gear added. Loved it with some cheap baffles. im glad he mentioned how stupid reliable the motor is . Hit it into a car at 15mph , and it took it like a buick.

I bought one of these sight unseen years ago. Was in a mudhole under a tarp for at least a decade. New plugs and clean gas and the bitch fired right up. Honda reliability in those days was UNREAL

I have a '74 Honda XL-125, and an '83 Nighthawk 650 along with my '14 CB500F. They all just do what they were made to without ever asking questions.

Agreed on the handlebars - been running dirt-bike bars on my 2001 Kawi W650 for over a decade. They just work.

Once, I bought 4 motorcycles in a group at a quite low price. After doing a few minor things to the one running bike, a Yamaha XS500, I sold that Yamaha for more than I paid for all 4 bikes. I sold some parts from the 2 non running parts bikes. I was left with a basically free ratty looking but complete 1982 Honda CM450E, the one with drum brakes, no center stand and no tachometer. Once I owned that bike I decided that it was the bike I would choose to own if I could afford only one low cost cheap to maintain motorcycle. They are very durable, smooth, and powerful enough. I loved the engine and wonderful gearbox that had an overdrive 6th gear. The bike ran highway speeds at low RPM's and had impressive torque for its engine size. I believe it was powerful enough that one could ride it across the country should one desire to do so. I actually did enjoy the bars and only found the twisting of the throttle grip to be awkward. I found its handling to be quite satisfactory.

My first bike was a 1980 CM400t. I loved that bike and still wish I had it. It would always start no matter what, the most reliable vehicle ever created.

I did replace the handlebars on it, made it a world better.

First bike I ever owned 7 years ago... bout it for $550 in running condition. Learned how to ride on it and didn’t spend a dime on fixing anything. Sold it a year later for $650. Great bike!! I look back at it now and should have kept it!

Owner of the bike here! I still think someone tipped it over. That bike stood through windier nights than that.

I should elaborate on the damage: bent handlebars (had already bought 1977 CB550 bars to replace the terrible original ones). The ears/brackets that hold the headlight bucket - and that the turn signals mount to - have bent. Already bought replacement signals because one shattered. Slight scuff on the right muffler, might have bent a bracket holding that too. Overall, still runs fine just a bunch of cosmetic/control damage.

I had one as my 2nd bike from when I was 20 until I was 25, first thing I did change was the handlebars. Not a highway bike at all but inside a dense city it rocked hard, especially since I cafe'd mine and lowered the gear ratio for more torque and less speed. It was a surprisingly nimble light-middle weight bike

This early only because KZbin's engine blew earlier.

I own a 1982 empire blue cm450c and lemme tell you all something about this little bike. This is my first bike, for under $1,500 I've seen many, many people sell these great machines. I'm a 300+lbs 6'3" man, and this bike will easily do 75mph with me on it, 4500-5000 RPM's...They aren't the biggest dog in the fight, but it will still be standing at the end of it. This bike makes you feel like it'll tango with liter bikes on twisty roads, it zips, it dodges, ducks, dips, dives, and dodges as best as I've ever seen a bike do so...It is an unsung hero of small bikes everywhere. That little bike, it's alright by me.

Woah... I had one of those... good street cruiser, decent reliable Honda. Very weird finally seeing a vehicle I owned being reviewed by RegularCars, I can say that yes wind could knock it over... a stray cat knocked mine over one day... and it was one the center stand... so. Oh and I dropped it once going 70kph in third gear and unlike dropping my harley sportster 1200 or 1300 midnight special... no broken anything woooh... (when the speedo was dead) and barely a scratch on the bike to boot, solid bike shame I sold it to a friend for a starter bike, but she still rides it to this day and loves it. Honda CM450, a "not bad, not great but not bad" motorbike.

Have an '83 CB550 - first thing I changed was the longhorn handlebars to a chrome sport set up - so much better. Has rubber bases on the signal stocks.

I, for better or worse, bought a brand new 2015 Triumph Bonneville as my first bike, which I still have. I did not drop that bike until this summer when I, stupidly, forgot something in the house and forgot to put the kickstand down. Small scratch on the exhaust. It was fine. I love old Honda’s. This is when they led the bike world, and I’m sad that’s not longer the case.

Well, with a cover a strong wind can do it, that's how sails work after all. But that's still a very strong gust I imagine. My bet is on someone backed into it or pushed it over.

This bike made a lot more sense in its automatic variant, the CM450A. Still a lot of demand for those out there, alongside the 400A...
