Yeah? Well, screw Harley. Their clunky obsolete breakdown bikes can't compete with what they sneeringly dismiss as rice-rockets, so they get cretinous protectionist politicians like Ronald Reagan to issue a motorcycle tariff or else the iron hand of the market might force Harley-Davidson into bankruptcy.

@@badlydrawncars6460 Well I am referring to Harley in the '80s. Growing up in the '70s, I remember how Harley-Davidsons were such utter uncomfortable junk. The motors were rigidly bolted to the frames (instead of to rubber motor mounts), making the bike vibrate herself to bits, and these bikes broke down a LOT. Friends who tried Japanese bikes in the late 1970s & early '80s discovered how reliable and easy to maintain they were compared to H-Ds. The Honda CB 750, Yamaha XS 650, Kawasaki KZ 900, Yamaha DT 250 enduro, etc. really gave Harley a run for their money and Harley cried to Mommy Reagan to make them stop. So screw Harley even though they did improve their bike designs in the 1980s such as the innovative 1340 cc V2 Evolution engine, the Softail hidden rear suspension system, switched from rigid-mounted engines to rubber-mounted, etc.

I saw this and was like "NOT A CAR" until the part where Regular talked about how much of a coward Harley Davidson was for running to the feds because Honda was kicking their butts. Just like when the 25 year rule and the chicken tax were imposed, American motoring industries run to the government to get a "safe space" made. Good on Honda for fighting back.

This reminds me of how the US automotive companies were losing to cheaper, more fuel efficient Japanese cars after the 70s, so the US said "Alright, y'all Japanese companies can only sell 1.68 million cars a year, no more than that" So Toyota was like "Fine, we'll sell less cars, but we'll make it a luxury car with higher profit margins, and it'll compete with all the other luxo barges. It'll be more expensive than a usual Toyota, but it'll still be cheaper than the competition and at the same time still be luxurious and more reliable" And so in 1989 Toyota made the Lexus LS and the rest is history

The Fed needs a mighty kick in the ass to make fun and affordable cars, trucks, and motorcycles legal again in the United States. Honda is more American than Ford at this point. And the Fed needs another kick to be reminded to leave body armor and guns alone. And yet another to get its hand out of the USPS cookie jar, otherwise that jar is going to bust.

Love the freaking TURBO stickers everywhere. Always felt like that was some sort of inside joke with the Japanese back in the 80's. Looked at a 2wd 1987 Toyota SR5 TURBO pickup yesterday, it had a red TURBO sticker on the tailgate(on a grey truck), TURBO on the b-pillar, TURBO on the bucket seatbacks, TURBO on the gauge cluster, TURBO on the valve cover.
@akabiscuitwaffle
@akabiscuitwaffle 3 жыл бұрын
I think that had to do with displacement. Since normally you'd slap FOUR LITER V8 or whatever on a car as a badge, with that displacement number as the dick measuring contest for how manly the car is, and most turbo engines use smaller displacements. IE they needed to make sure you understood that the engine size was irrelevant, because it has a turbo in it. Elsewise, most people would just see "2 liter" and think "no power girl engine". So you bury that displacement number deep in the owners manual, and slap TURBO everywhere to reinforce that it can't be compared to a regular engine.

reminds me of that time in the 70's when honda asked GM if they wanted to use honda's CVCC pre-ignition chamber emissions tech, to which GM's CEO rudely dismissed them. so Soichiro Honda, the mad lad, gets his engineers to buy a new chevy impala, ship it back to japan, redesign its heads to contain a CVCC system, then ship it back to california, then get the EPA to test it, and of course, it gets better fuel economy and preformance, just to rub it in GM's face.

Heck I'm paying less for my Pontiac vibe per month, then I was for my maxim 650, and I can drive all year round with my family. I really wish it made more sense, but here in Canada a 50cc scooter in the summer is the best bike. 12 bucks a month in insurance and I can still get open air in the summer and it won't double my insurance prices

Now if you have a dab pen, you can chooch on that fucker like a choo choo train, and drink some of that espresso to make your throat feel better. If you cough, you're fucked. Rona. Nah I'm jk. Remember when "Honda Motorcycle" wasn't a synonym for "mediocre"? Well, that's when.
@Uncle_Roadkill
@Uncle_Roadkill 4 жыл бұрын
@Lassi Kinnunen Maybe "mediocre" ain't the right word, maybe it should've been "boring". Hondas are fine motorcycles, reliable and all that, but they just don't make anything rebellious anymore, like this one, or, say, Magna V45 or VTR 1000.
@Arthurzeiro
@Arthurzeiro 4 жыл бұрын
I would not call modern hondas mediocre just too formulaic, the fact Honda still hasn't released a lighter 270 degree mid displacement twin to encroach on the FZ/MT-07 territory and instead insisting on the heavy and boring CB650 is a good example.

I had a sabre 700s and man for such a heavy bike, that thing screamed and was reliable as all hell. 1984 model, I bought with 36,000 on the odometer. Never had to fix anything. My 97 Softail with only 6000 miles has already been in the shop for 3 different batteries, 3 different tail lights that won't stop breaking, and a stupid primary case plug that won't stop leaking. 🙄 I love the look and power of my Harley but I'm not satisfied with the amount of work this damn bike needs for basically being brand new.

Back in the mid 90's I had the opportunity to buy a CX650 Turbo, BRAND NEW!!! It was for sale in the classifieds of Motor Cycle News, a weekly motorcycle tabloid that I read religiously every week here in the UK. Described as new in the crate, owned since new! I almost broke my arm reaching for the phone to call about it. Transpired that the guy bought one and liked it so much he bought another brand new one, the one now for sale, so that he had another to use when the first one was worn out! Plans change though and he still had the first one and was riding it, with 140,0000 miles on it! Now being much older he decided he needed the money more than a new, unused 80's wonder bike, hence the sale. He wanted £5000 for it, which was alot of money even for that back then. I said ok, it's sold, I'll take it. I sent a cheque for a holding deposit and said I'd collect it that Saturday, and I said don't sell it to anyone else, I will 100% be buying it. 2 days later he called to tell me another buyer woudln't take no for an answer and offered him £6000, so he'd sold it to him and was returning my cheque!! I went ballistic and asked why he hadn't called me to ask if I'd match the higher offer, which I would have done. He said he thought I'd be angry that he was going back on our deal, I said I would have been but not as angry as I was then to lose the bike to someone else!! Fuck I had the rage about that for months!!! Imagine how much that would be worth now!! I'm still pissed about it now!

Well first off this is hilarious because of course during your last bike review I mentioned this exact model as being my first scary ride in a motorcycle. Good friend of mine I met right out of high school had one, his first bike was a Honda Rebel which should just come out, this was his fun bike. So keep in mind I did not have a license and I'd only been on a motorcycle a few times as a driver/rider but as a passenger it was still terrifying. The thing is it's as you mentioned it doesn't rev very high but when that 19 lbs finally kicks in and that turbo starts squealing the acceleration is just nutty. So for example he would probably be in like 2nd gear pulling onto the freeway and he'll just let it rev out but as soon as that needle hit about 5 grand it just buried. Very similar experience I had on a modified b13 rotary installed in an RX3 that was heavily modified. I'd never been in an engine that revved that fast before. So thank you again for this reliving a found teenage memory for me.The friend in question tragically was murdered a year or so after the story took place. Of course Nick's awesome parody musical stylings. You guys always make my day.

I remember those when they were introduced, one of the first motorcycles with fuel injection. Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki also introduced turbos about the same year. Critics at the time considered the CX500T and CX650T to be the most refined, Suzuki the most sport, Kawasaki for brutal acceleration and the Yamaha Seca Turbo wasn't much better than a standard Seca However they were too complex, too expensive and none of them were successful
