I was there as a flag marshal and it was a total "F---Up" by incompetent officials like I've never seen before or since. Allan was a very intense and polarising individual but no one can deny his persistence to be the best that he could be as a race car driver. I wouldn't say that he was the most naturally gifted race car driver but the contribution he made to Australian motor sport in that era was very significant and to be admired.

But, this guy is the reason why the GTHO Phase 4, the proper 360 Charger and the 308 XU1 were killed off. A no news day ruined Aussie muscle cars for damn near 20 years. But it also made a GTHO Phase 3 worth a million dollars in 2018 too. RIP Evan.

The lengths Australian motor sport have gone too in order to defend Ford and Holden is unbelievable, it started with the RX 7 and then later because Godzilla didn't have a Holden or Ford badge on it they changed the whole formula. Australian motor sport officials should be ashamed of themselves. It was OK that a FORD Sierra which was never sold in Australia rang rings around other cars BUT put a Nissan badge on a car and its not allowed compete or Sookie Dickie Johnson would have another tantrum. Shame, Shame, Shame!!!!!
@mikeobrien98296 жыл бұрын
@Brad Williams your obviously delirious, CAMS thought it was OK when the Sierra was racing and thrashing everything, but when Nissan did the same thing, firstly they made them put lead in the floor to slow them down and then changed the whole formula so the Nissans couldn't do what the Sierras had been doing for the previous 4 years. If that isn't OBVIOUS FORD BIAS THEN WHAT IS???

Moffat of course won later, because CAMS didn't have a leg to stand on. The rule at the time stated only that competitors must proceed through the pits with care and caution, there was nothing in the rules that related to actual speed. Moffat declared that he drove with suitable care and caution, and that was that. Not surprisingly soon after, first speed bumps came and when Moffat jumped them in true off road style, pit speed limits were bought into play. For internationals reading this, CAMS is still fucking up Australian motor racing to this very day, they have a long history of ridiculous, out of touch rulings. One time they even made all touring cars, 1984 from memory, have ALL the eletrical equipment that came standard working in the cars, including electric windows, cruise controls and even the stereos, in full working order, no shit.
@darrylkelly79586 жыл бұрын
Yep... Back in the 80's the dashboard was sacrosanct and could not be violated, therefore no roll bars could pass through them... Unlike a proper racing car. CAMS were and always have been a bunch of fuddy duddies with not very much of a fucking clue of where their suppositories are not the least what the god damn rules are...
@markmark52696 жыл бұрын
Yup, remember the Larry bar that passed through the dash and the outcry, and that it saved at least 2 very serious incidents through stopping wheels coming completly through the windscreen not long after, Crompton was one of them at Bathurst. The Larry bar (Larry Perkins) took the full impact of those wheels.
@darrylkelly79586 жыл бұрын
Mark Mark yeah but back in the 80s in group c you could not pass anything through the dash. The larry bar went from the roll hoop to the passenger side bend of the front bar by the dash. Lowndes profited from the larry bar in 2005 I think it was when that wheel came off the Steve Richsrds Commodore after repco on the way to the cutting

CAMS once enforced the commodores have the air conditioning system "fitted" to the cars because the 500 special road cars that were the basis for its homologation had A/C. The HDT responded by homologating a "Police Special". From memory one of the teams had the A/C compressor tied to the roll cage

Had no idea about this incident. Sounds like there was a stuff up in the ruling. Alan Moffat probably did go a little fast in pit lane hence why there's a particular rule about it. I don't really know the ins and outs of group c regulations and in particular driver code of conduct of that period but it sounds like some rules were contentious in how they were interpreted by some officials on the day. I wonder what ever became of that incident. Did Alan Moffat lodge an appeal or take legal action over that particular incident in the days and weeks after sandown in 1982? I'm sure someone knows what happened afterwards in regards to any possible appeals or legal action taken in dispute of the ruling. Interested in knowing more about that.

I remember the old Pit Lane at Sandown when it was located between Turn 1 & Turn 3. I remember Moffat's Mazda RX-7, there were 2 of them at one stage, one LHD and the other RHD to suit different circuits. I remember this event and many subsequent races at Sandown, my favourite circuit.
@red131abarth6 жыл бұрын
Interesting the CAMS-bashers out there. The incident was triggered by a poor decision by a Clerk-of-Course from the Light Car Club who didn't know the rules in detail. It was the CAMS rule book and tribunal process that overturned the result. To be fair the pitlane was narrow and Moffat used to fly through pit lanes everywhere, as there was no rule against it. I think the fact that he hit one of Grice's crew and broke his leg was what forced the Clerk-of-Course to do something about Moffat's pit lane speed. But this time it wasn't CAMS' fault.

A very true comment by Allen Moffat at the end, to accept an import vehicle with a 1300cc motor to have beaten a locally made V8 race car would most certainly have been an early demise to the local car industry here in Australia. It's now 2019 and there is now no car industry at all here anymore, a Holden is now made overseas and they all look, sound, and drive like a shitbox. At least when they were made here we all knew how to work on the locally made Holdens, these days you need to be a " technician" with a frickn computer to do find a faulty in these crap throw away cars. Holden parent company is american, general motors chevrolet aka gmc we have no australian car we may have had several foreign manufacturers build/assemble cars in australia but they have since departed but no australian car which means most profits have gone offshore to their foreign owners so I have no idea why so much favourtism toward only one manufacturer without any competition in this sport and removing the rest when competition should be welcomed and building better cars than what we actually have now and may the best man win (no offence is meant or implied to anyone whatsoever)
