This year is the end of OJ Anderson's prime. He gets 1,200 yards on the ground in 1984, but then has four lost seasons before two more good years for the Giants, grinding out three yards per carry and scoring 25 TDs. And he got two rings. Interesting career.

You are correct. He was a racehorse between 79-84. He had power and speed. His last few years he was a wise powerful back but the speed wasn't there.

Roy Green is one of my favorite Cardinals of all time. Neil Lomax was the best they ever had other than Kurt Warner. His dam hip gave out on him.

Neil O'Donahue with his game losing missed extra point at 1:16:36. Wasn't satisfied costing the Cards a win the season before missing a 19 yard FG in overtime but here he misses an extra point.

@NJ CardFan O’Donahue wasn’t finished costing the Cards games. His missed GW FG attempt at Washington in Week 16 prevented the Cards from not only making the playoffs, but also the NFC East title.

@@jamiejohnson4524 I don't fault him for that. It was a rushed attempt(no spiking it into the ground back then), was a pretty long FG, on a beat up turf and he didn't miss by much. The real crime that game was the BS roughing the passer penalty on EJ Junior during the drive where the Deadskins took the lead.

If there was ever a guy I wanted to mangle with a baseball bat, it was O'Donahue. I remember that OT game and many others. He sucked in Tampa Bay as well. 59.3% field goals made (no, that is not a typo. He even missed 17 extra points. 17! Absolute shit player that an organization like the Cardinals loved to get.

Those '84 Cards were the last decent team they while still in STL. They missed the division title by one hurried, last second 50 yard FG on the last week of the season at old RFK. They'd never come close the playoffs again while in St. Louis.

No, my friend. This was the game that cost them the division. Missed extra points do that. And the '87 team was pretty good but they lost some close games. Like week 2, fell behind 28-0, fought back to 28-24, got inside the Charger 10 yard line late in the game and Earl Ferrell drops a sure wide open TD on 4th down. They lost to the Eagles on a late TD, blew a 10 point 2nd half lead to the Rams, and lost a close one to the Cowboys in the last week. Not to mention not playing the Colts who were pretty bad early in the year(they would have come into St. Louis 0-2).

Neil O'Donaghue essentially "single-footedly" cost St. Louis playoff spots in 1983 & for sure in 84. If he makes just ONE of his shanks from the MNF tie at Busch Stadium in 83 vs New York, they finish 9-7. In 84, he continued his erratic kicking in this season-opener, and a costly loss at home to Los Angeles. This, not to mention the officials STEALING a Lomax to Green TD catch in their 7 point loss to Dallas in November. Convert just ONE of these 3 travesties into a win, the Cardinals finish 1984 at 10-6. They, (not the Giants) are in the postseason, and host Chicago in the NFC Wild Card game.

Agree it was the last decent team that they ever had during their remaining years in STL(should've and could've been one of their greatest teams ever). Buy they actually had one more good chance to make the playoffs in 1987. All they had to do was beat a horrible Dallas Cowboys team in the last game of the season and they would've clinched the last wildcard spot. Naturally, they choked and lost to the Cowboys 21-16. Big Red was driving late in the game for the winning TD but--of course--the center snapped the football over the head of Lomax. And that was that.

These teams were very similar in records in 1983 and 1984. Both were very close to the playoffs. The Packers would lose their next seven games after this opener.

But down the stretch, the Packers won seven of the last eight (the one loss an upset to Detroit on Thanksgiving Day) which still left them short of the playoffs that year.
